Free Them 5K

On Saturday we met up with some of our small group to participate in World Concern’s Free Them 5K, helping build awareness of the worldwide problem with human trafficking.

This year the participants numbered over 2000.

Our son’s company was a large contributor and had a tent on campus with a giveaway. We were sad that Josh could not participate in person this year because of a recreational soccer injury he received earlier in the week that has had him home having to stay off his feet.

Another successful 5K/10K and hopefully our DIL Laura will have a more restful week now that this major responsibility is complete. After the walk Dear and I stopped by Chipotle to order some takeout food to deliver to our injured son and a meal for our DIL to enjoy once she got home from all her responsibilities at the 5K.

Today we are back in a rainy pattern here in the Pacific Northwest. It was fun to get phone calls from my kids one after another today to wish me a Happy Mother’s Day. Flowers showed up at my door today, too.

On another note I got a lead on a high school kid who is trying to earn money for a mission trip so I might get some help with the yard work. I’m happy to pay well for someone earning money for missions. I only have 3 things on my calendar this week…woohoo. How about you?

Tour of Seattle…

…on a blustery day!

The wind and rain limited my camera from clicking much outdoors. We were again blessed with a parking spot right at the Market! Amazing! My cousin and his wife who happens to be my best friend from college are in Seattle and I tried to give them my hallmark tour but we just had to go with the flow. While at the Market we went down the steps to the famous “Gum Wall”.

It can be a little overwhelming for newcomers! Jim and Jeanie were good sports.

Jim wanted to enjoy the abundance of our seafood choices and ordered a crab cocktail to enjoy while we walked around the stalls in the Market.

When in Seattle it’s a good idea to enjoy our bounty!

Katie joined us on our tour, too. Our last stop downtown would be Boka for Happy Hour where we would meet Dear when he was done with work.

I’m grateful that Dear is willing to work hard while I gallivant about the town. We love to meet up after work for him to enjoy a good ending to the day.

Father and daughter time is always good along with some good food!

We have lots of good history with Jim and Jeanie. Jim, Jeanie and I all graduated together from Cal State Los Angeles in 1972. Jeanie and I both graduated with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Home Economics. We both completed a 5th year to receive our Teaching Credential. Jim and Jeanie were married the same year Dear and I were married. We’ve had lots of celebrations together. We lived in Huntington Beach together as newlyweds and attended the same church. Their 3 kids were born in the same years our kids were born at different ends of the year.

Our Seattle tour was on Friday afternoon. I’ll be sharing our Saturday tour on Whidbey Island soon. Today we attended church together with a great celebration of Missions around the world and in our neighborhoods. Good times and good memories continue. A great afternoon of re-kindling our memories of fun playing Rook together so many years ago…

Hope you had a good weekend!

Chirp, Chirp…

Some of you might be tired of seeing food photos so I’m chirping in to say we are busy here with some out of towners. My camera cord for my computer is in their bedroom and they are sleeping so I can’t show you a few photos from our gallivanting. We might be going to an island today and not the sunny tropical variety.

Hope your weekend is going smoothly. I’m thinking of our bloggy friends in the path of the latest greatest storm and hoping all is well with you!

It’s probably time to refill the bird feeder! Blessings!

What Warms Your Heart?

There are some things that we just have to wake up and see and our hearts will be warmed. And then there are the deliberate things we do or put on our schedule that can warm our heart, too.

The second Thursday of every month our church rallies volunteers to cook a meal in the church kitchen at 5:30. It’s the exact same recipe every month with a different group of people cooking it but the same supervisors to guide the volunteers. The “supe” is checking the meat to make sure it’s up to the right temperature.

Large coolers are fitted with a food safe liner to mix the dish in and to transport the dish from Kirkland to Seattle arriving hot and ready to serve. I suppose we could call these coolers “warmers” or portable ovens. First the sauce goes in.

Then the meat and the vegetables, the rice and some more vegetables. Stir it up with the big wooden food paddle.

You add the carrots last and keep stirring.

While the hot meal is being cooked more volunteers are preparing peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to send off with the homeless after they enjoy their hot meal.

This time we also had warm blankets to load up and distribute to the guys that would be lining up for dinner.

Of course there’s the clean-up, too. So whoever is not stirring the final product gets busy washing up as much as they can before we take off to go downtown so there is less to clean up when we come back. We load everything up in the van that will transport us across Lake Washington to the meal site. Then we wait for Kay Abe. The little perky lady that started the Lord’s Table.

“Hungry patrons stand in a line curving around the fence. Men and women of all ages and races patiently wait as Kay Abe rushes around to make last-minute arrangements. Someone can’t locate a knife to serve the pie, but digging through her bag of supplies, Abe finds something that can work.”

Our church’s ministry is called Isaiah 58 and we partner with the organization downtown called The Lord’s Table. The Lord’s Table started with one dear woman who decided she could feed the homeless. Now after several years different volunteer groups partner with Kay Abe to serve these hot meals Monday thru Thursday nights. Last Thursday night I held Kay’s hand as we stood in a circle holding hands to pray and thank God for the men who came to eat the meal, she told us she is now 86.  You can read a little about Kay and this ministry here, and  here. You can see from the first article that she used to do the brunt of the work.

I didn’t count but we served close to 100 this night. Besides the hot dish we served green salad, fruit salad, buttered bread, hot drinks, and dessert. It was a very cold night and the favorite drink for the night was hot chocolate. All but 4 of the blankets were distributed. This whole process downtown occurs from approximately 8 pm – 9 pm. After we cleaned up even the pigeons were able to glean some food.

Sometimes it’s hard to put something like this on your calendar. This very day I was sitting in my warm house thinking about how cold it would be downtown and wondering how I might get out of it. My throat was a little scratchy, you know. Maybe I should just stay home. I’m glad the Lord fixed my attitude and I went. The whole evening warmed my heart. 1. Making sandwiches with the members of our small group and their children. 2. Watching the hot dish crew mix and cook and stir the main dish. 3. Watching others from our small group wash up the dishes smiling and laughing. 4. Loading up the van. 5. Then being able to load plates and smile and give a cheery greeting to all who came through the line downtown.  6. Meeting Kay again and being blessed by her unselfish service to the Homeless in downtown Seattle. Yep…my heart was warm and bubbling over…

I’m sure you can find a similar ministry where you live and I encourage you to take the leap and join in for an evening or day. You will get a new perspective…

Downtown Seattle

On Wednesday afternoon we met Terry and Lovella at Boka in downtown Seattle for Happy Hour.

The food was all delicious but the company was better.

If you find yourself in downtown Seattle to shop let us know and we’ll meet you for Happy Hour.

Today Dear and I are headed north across the line to meet up with 6 of the MGCC girls and their husbands for dinner at Bev and Harv’s. Looking forward to this get-together. We’ll head north after Dear gets home from work. We will spend Saturday to recoup! What are your plans this weekend before U.S. Thanksgiving?

Homecoming…

This mama duck is really excited that papa duck flies over the skies of Washington today on his way to SeaTac airport. Because he was in Europe we didn’t have the daily phone call opportunities that make being apart from each other easier. So much news to share, mostly good but some sad news, too. He gets home a little before noon on Wednesday.

Maybe he’ll have a window seat and get to see our dramatic Washington volcanoes from the plane…

I mowed the weeds yesterday and used the mower as a vacuum for the leaves that have fallen. Maybe I’ll put something in the crockpot so things smell good when Dear arrives. It’s good that he’ll have Thursday off so he can work on that jet lag that always accompanies such a long trip through several time zones. What does your Wednesday hold?

Still in His Fifties…

…for yet another year. He’ll join me in the sixties next September 9th! Yes, I married a younger man and it’s been one of my best decisions in the last 38 years! Today we celebrated Dear all day. Before I share a few photos from this day I need to go back just a week to share another day of celebrating.

Last Sunday we enjoyed brunch at Palisade on Elliott Bay to celebrate Josh and Laura’s 11th anniversary.

Views from our table looking out on the marina and bay.

Besides our choices for brunch off the menu there was a brunch buffet, too.

Salads, scones, biscuits, croissants, banana bread, and muffins…

Jumbo shrimp and crab…

Banana macadamia nut pancakes made to order…

They even had a build your own Bloody Mary station…

Dear and Josh ordered the Crab Benedict and Laura and I ordered the 2 egg breakfast.

And would you believe they had a dessert bar, too. There was a lot more to choose from than what is on this next plate.

I shared this plate with Dear…

We had a wonderful time and the day was so nice in the Seattle area that when we left our table full and satisfied we strolled along the marina enjoying the water views and seeing the cruise ships docked.

See the Space Needle beyond the ships?

Father and son…

We were surprised to see the leaves changing already.

Last Sunday was a beautiful day to enjoy Seattle or any city in the Northwest.

Today the weather turned on us. The winds kicked up. The temperatures got cool. The leaves were falling and blowing around the yard. I’ll share more from Dear’s day later. Dear’s day was a work day for all of us and I still need to upload the photos…

Hope you all had a good weekend.

Fun on Saturday…

Finally hung my new squirrel proof bird feeder that my friend Beth gave me. Thanks Beth! It was sunny a couple days this week! I also added some lanterns in the tree for fun. I might hang them again with red, white, and blue ribbons for the 4th of July.

The lanterns came down before the rains came down again on Friday.

On the way to the Sounders game last Wednesday (another great sunny day, but who’s counting?) we saw the progress on Seattle’s Ferris Wheel. I love that the stadiums and Mt. Rainier are in the background.

Saturday morning I’m headed out, probably in the rain, for a little reunion walk with my former walking buddies. In the evening we are joining our son and DIL at a Medical Missions Auction fund raiser dinner at Safeco Field, that’s where the Mariners Baseball team plays. The dinner will be on the infield of the stadium. We were told to make sure we dress warmly. It should be fun. We might get some sun again tomorrow.  On Sunday after church I’m hoping to drag Dear to the HomeGoods grand opening in Lynnwood. Finally they are opening a store here in Washington state. How’s your weekend shaping up?

What’s New…

…in the Seattle Area.

Here are a few new things happening in the Seattle area and the state of Washington. I already showed you the latest color on the Space Needle in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the World’s Fair in Seattle. We are also getting a ferris wheel with gondolas similar to the London Eye but a lot smaller. This is located on the Seattle Waterfront. The other new big news item here in Washington is the fact that the State has been forced out of being in the retail liquor business. Starting on June 1st we’ll be able to buy hard liquor at grocery stores and Costco instead of State owned liquor stores. The grocery flyers this week have this as their front page story. I find it very amusing…

Goodbye to May and my Rhoddies! The blooms are fading and falling off the bushes.

If I post again this week I’ll be posting from Chicago. I’m sure my camera will be busy. I bought some new walking shoes that I’ve been breaking in this week. So far I’m really pleased with the Clarks Wave shoes I bought. Whoa! Today is the last day of May…

Free Them 5K!

We joined our son’s team Axia Home Loans Lynnwood to walk against human trafficking. World Concern in Seattle sponsored the event.

This is part of our Northshore Baptist group. Notice the sun glasses? We are in a wonderful stretch of sunny days here in the Seattle area. We were all a little befuddled from all the sunshine we were in on Saturday!

This event has really grown from year to year and our daughter in law was busy helping coordinate it all week long. Thankfully there were lots of volunteers to help things run more smoothly. Human trafficking is a troubling worldwide problem and events like these raise awareness and money to help fight it!

Our sunny day activities continued on after our morning walk and I’ll share more later. Today I’m linking this post with Mary at Little Red House for Mosaic Monday.
