Holy Rosary in Tonasket, Washington. The whole city of Tonasket was on level 3 evacuation notice last week. The level was later lowered.

These churches are in areas of Washington that have been on fire watch and evacuation notice. We continue to pray for containment of the many fires still burning in Washington State. We have a mountain range between us and the major fire areas and the last couple days the smoke has traveled over the Cascade Mountain range and is hanging in the air in Western Washington. The setting sun was orange yesterday. Rain without lightning would be a very welcome event.

Today for our Sunday Worship the church doors were closed and we had over 2000 volunteers go out to our area schools to spruce up the grounds and help teachers in their classrooms get ready for the new year. Community Serve Day is a great event that we have the privilege to participate in as a church every year. Here’s a collage of Dear getting areas ready for fresh paint before the event today. Today he painted the brick wall that he pressure washed on Friday. I helped in one of the classrooms doing whatever the teacher asked of me.

I took this photo well before I owned a digital camera from the Ancient Roman Baths. Dear and Katie are next to the statue with Bath Abbey behind them. This was on a graduation gift trip we took our daughter Katie on in 2004. Ha! My photo even has the date stamp on it ’04 4 11. Bath was on the itinerary because we were visiting Katie’s favorite author’s haunts. We traced some of Jane Austen’s inspirations here. We visited some special spots related to C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, and Monty Python, too.

A Year Ago…

For InSPIREd Sunday and Spiritual Sundays I’m going back to a road trip our daughter and I took to get her back to North Carolina to welcome her husband home from his second tour of duty in Afghanistan with the Marine Corps. One of the places we took time to visit was Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Legend of the Dogwood

There is a legend, that at the time of the Crucifixion the dogwood had been the size of the oak and other forest trees. So firm and strong was the tree that it was chosen as the timber of the cross. To be used thus for such a cruel purpose greatly distressed the tree, and Jesus, nailed upon it, sensed this, and in His gentle pity for all sorrow and suffering said to it: “Because of your regret and pity for My suffering, never again shall the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used as a cross. Henceforth it shall be slender and bent and twisted and its blossoms shall be in the form of a cross. ..two long and two short petals. And in the center of the outer edge of each petal there will be nail prints, brown with rust and stained with red, and in the center of the flower will be a crown of thorns, and all who see it will remember.”

I recognize that this is just a legend but I wanted to post this entry because I’ve always loved the Dogwood blooms. If I look at them and think about what my Savior did for me that’s a good thing. He created the tree, the beautiful bloom, and you and me to enjoy it!

We will be taking a short road trip to Canada on Saturday. I’ll share about our time next week. It takes us under two hours to get to the U.S./Canadian border from where we live in Washington State. Hope you have a wonderful first weekend in May!

InSPIREd Sunday ~ Chewelah

While in Eastern Washington last weekend we had a little driving time down Main Street in Chewelah and spotted the Chewelah Baptist Church. Linking to InSPIREd Sunday with Beth and Sally.

We had a great weekend in Eastern Washington spending time in Chewelah, Colville and Kettle Falls. Today I’m just back from a 24 hour trip to Southern California. Travel two weekends in a row has gotten the best of me. I’m looking forward to a quiet week and a stay at home weekend to come. How are things in your neck of the woods?

InSPIREd on Bainbridge Island

While on Bainbridge Island last Friday and Saturday we spotted a couple churches to share for InSPIREd Sunday hosted by Beth and Sally.

We also spotted one more spire on our travel up the island, Seabold United Methodist Church.

We are getting ready for Easter Week at this old house. Tomorrow is Palm Sunday and through the week we’ll pause on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the amazing climax and grand celebration of the week, Easter Sunday or Resurrection Sunday! I love all the history of this coming week and what it means for us…

Sunlit Spires

Dear and I were able to get away on an overnight trip to Bainbridge Island and we decided to drive up to the Kitsap Peninsula through the Nordic town of Poulsbo on our way home. We were pleasantly surprised by a very nice and sunny mid-morning to evening on this Saturday after being soaked by rain Friday night and early Saturday morning. I have lots to share from our wonderful getaway.

We had a wonderful Sunday morning at our own church, not this church I pictured. We were able to witness 15 or 43 total Baptisms. We have 3 services so the Baptisms were spaced out between the services. From elementary age children, high school, college, and older adults including a married couple we witnessed obedience to the Word of God to believe and be baptized.

InSPIREd Sunday -Duomo Milan

In March of 2013 I traveled with my Dear to Milan, Italy for a EAU conference. The Duomo Di Milano stunned us with it’s beauty and architecture.

InSPIREd Sunday – Skagit Valley

There’s a little white church in the valley
That stands in my memory each day
And it seems I can hear the bells now ringing
Though I am many miles away

And many times in church on Sunday morning
That whole countryside would gather there
They would all kneel down by the altar
As they lifted up their voice in prayer

   Oh the church in the valley that little white church
Is the place I love so well

I took these series of photos in April of 2012. When we travel to La Conner or to Mount Vernon, Washington State to see the tulip fields we take the road that runs right next to this church. Fir-Conway Lutheran Church met first in a smaller building built in 1896. This larger building was dedicated in 1916. You can read it’s history here.

InSPIREd Sunday ~ Washington National Cathedral

This cathedral, officially the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, had its beginning in 1893. The foundation stone was laid in 1907 in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt, and the Cathedral was completed in 1990 – 83 years later – when the “final finial” was placed in the presence of President George H.W. Bush.

Built of Indiana limestone, the Cathedral is the sixth largest in the world. Its design is unique and not copied from any earlier building. The building is shaped like a cross, with a long nave – a tenth of a mile- and two shorter transepts.

The Cathedral’s architectural style is Gothic, characterized by great height and the use of pointed arches, boss stones, ribbed vaulting,  large windows, and flying buttresses.

When visiting these wonderful historical sites there’s always something you miss or at least I miss. I tend to learn more about the site when I finally get ready to post about it on my blog. Although I did notice these Gargoyles, I totally missed the fact that Darth Vader was one of the Gargoyles on the Cathedral! Here’s an explanation.

In the 1980s, while the west towers were under construction, Washington National Cathedral held a decorative sculpture competition for children. Word of the competition was spread nationwide through National Geographic World Magazine. The third-place winner was Christopher Rader, with his drawing of that fearful villain, Darth Vader. The fierce head was sculpted by Jay Hall Carpenter, carved by Patrick J. Plunkett, and placed high upon the northwest tower of the Cathedral.

You would need binoculars to see it so I don’t feel too bad about totally missing it!
