Stained Glass ~ Washington National Cathedral

Get ready for photo overload. I have so many photos to share from our trip to Washington D.C. that I’ll have to break my posts down to different aspects of each spot I visited. The Washington National Cathedral was amazing to visit. Today I’ll share the Windows for you for Ruby Tuesday with Mary at Work of the Poet.

This is the Space Window which holds a piece of moon rock brought back by the crew of Apollo XI.

One theme, told moving from the west to east, is the story of redemption through faith. Beginning at the west facade and west rose window with the story of creation, this theme continues through the clerestory windows, and ends with the sculpture of Christ in Majesty at the high altar.

Christ in Majesty at the high altar.

This series of 3 photos shows 6 of the 12 disciples of Jesus.

I’ll be posting more photos of the Washington National Cathedral in the next couple of days.

  1. This is a most wonderful post. What is the last set of windows? Some day…stained glass in my home. I love the brilliance of the colors. The girls say they are filling the memory cards on the cameras each day and must download. They are headed to Union Station tonight after playing at the Spy Museum.

  2. The glass shown on top looks as if it is on fire – perhaps a divine being radiating through the glass. A wonderful capture!

The stories are told on each window, each panel perhaps a chapter in a divine book. The artwork is stunning, the background illumined by the light of day. Which adds a boldness to each hue.

I haven’t been to DC since 1976 – time to visit and chronicle in digotal beautiful sights as this!

  3. All those delicious reds really show up when the sun shines through!

    A SPLASH OF RED

A splash of red or a dash of blue—
Which is the color that’s just for you?

A hint of blue or a tint of red—
Which of these colors goes to your head?

Of all the colors under the sun,
Red is simply my favorite one!

  4. The colors are gorgeously vivid! And how interesting that St. Thomas’ beard is turquoise and St.Bartholomew’s blue….very creative.
