We are spending some time in Northeastern Washington with some significant snow still on the ground. We are helping our kids get more settled in their new home before their baby, our first grandchild arrives in March. Many things look great with a snow backdrop.

Twice in December we drove north to the town of La Conner to enjoy a meal and a stroll.
We enjoy the farm scenes that we pass along the way.
At the end of December we celebrated Katie’s birthday at Anelia’s which features some good Polish fare and other light dishes.
At the beginning of December we ate at the Oyster and Thistle for our anniversary.

We had a cold quiet weekend mostly with small projects accomplished and started. I lasted just a very short while outside starting the Apple Tree Pruning. It didn’t take long for my hands to complain from the cold. I’ll be doing that project in short shifts. The Pear tree needs pruning also. January is full of events for us at this Old House.
Today at the Mennonite Girls Can Cook blog I posted a French Onion Soup for two recipe. I was inspired by the soup I had at the Oyster and Thistle in La Conner in the mosaic above. Happy Monday!
Ohio country roads. We didn’t make it to the larger cities in Ohio like Cleveland or Columbus. On this drive we were headed to the airport in Detroit to fly back to Washington State.
It was always a treat to see a horse and buggy although it was scary to see scenes like this next one.

We stopped at this General Store near Sunnyslope before we drove through Nashville, Ohio.
Word of Truth Bible Church in Nashville, Ohio.
First Presbyterian Church in Loudonville was having a Ham and Bean Supper. Loudonville is in the heart of Mohican Country.
Just after Hayesville we connected to Highway 30 to head west and connected to 75 north onward to Michigan. We stopped in Toledo, Ohio for lunch. Toledo was the largest city we navigated on this trip.
Holy Toledo! Many of us have heard the expression, but where did it come from?
The origin of the exclamation “Holy Toledo!” is the subject of much speculation. One suggestion is the name came about because of the heavy concentration of churches located on Collingwood Boulevard, according to the Greater Toledo Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Also, the City of Toledo, Spain, after which the American city is named, is often called “the Holy City of Toledo.”
Other suggestions of origin are not religious, but may be more likely. Holy Week has always been the worst week at the box office for show business; old-time Vaudeville actors contended that any week in Toledo was Holy Week. Toledoans Joe E. Brown and Danny Thomas popularized the term as they became nationally known performers.

After driving around this area looking for a spot that was open to have lunch we settled on the Ye Olde Durty Bird. It was open and there was parking across the street. Sometimes those are the best reasons to choose a spot in a downtown area. Thankfully it was good.

We had a lazy mostly indoor Saturday with lots and lots of rain. Today, Sunday, we’ve had some blue skies and sunshine. We spent the afternoon with our oldest kids. They fed us well and we had some good conversation. We’ve followed super Sunday in Major League Soccer to see who will move forward in the playoffs towards the MLS Cup final game. Montreal is moving on and it looks like Toronto will, too, eliminating both New York teams. We (Seattle) play Dallas this evening. Colorado eliminated Los Angeles earlier today. This information is probably only interesting to me and that’s okay.

Plain people are Christian groups characterized by separation from the world and by simple living, including plain dressing. This is a very simple definition of Plain People.

Fall is living up to it’s name in our yard. Dear went out and rustled up all the leaves this morning and then the winds came and there are more leaves than before on the ground. That is the price we pay for the beauty of our changing seasons. It’s worth it.
As I type I’m watching more leaves fall and it’s a lovely sight.
When were were driving the Heritage Trail on a Sunday in Indiana it didn’t take us long to figure out that there was a church gathering happening in a room in this barn.
All the horses were unhitched from their buggies.
At one point a fussy little one had to be taken out to the buggy for something to soothe the tears.

We are in the country again this weekend in Northeastern Washington State. The guys are working on finishing up a staircase project while us girls are walking and enjoying other things. The big storm that was suppose to hit the Western part of our state fizzled out. That’s okay by us. Hope your weekend is filled with peace.
I tried to get some information on this mural on line and couldn’t really find anything. There were some references to Corn School.

On our way to Shipshewana, Indiana from the Detroit airport we stopped in La Grange on Highway 20 a few miles from “Shipshe” for dinner and saw these churches and mural while scoping out our dinner options. It didn’t take long to decide on one of the two spots that were open. The barn was spotted on the road before we reached La Grange.

…of the Great Divide. The only side of Washington that is predominately red in their politics. The line between the blue and red counties cuts along the Cascade Mountain range. The blue side has the highest population, largest cities, with Seattle (652,405) being the largest. The red side has the most farmers and ranchers and many small cities. The largest city on the red side of our state is Spokane (210,721), then Spokane Valley (91,113) and Kennewick (76,762). All the population numbers I’m sharing are from 2013. The city I live in on the blue side of the state has a population of 21,611.
Dear and I travel across the great divide when we visit our son and daughter-in-law. We enjoy our time on that side. We find it refreshing. There are lots of great fences and barns to photograph. Here are some of those fences and barns all taken in Stevens County.

Happy First day of September to all of you! I started the morning off with fresh strong coffee in a new cup to me that I bought at the Habitat for Humanity Shop in Colville, Washington (population 4,668). It was half off and I only paid 40 cents for it. It’s Churchill made in England with a population of 53.01 million.
May September bring good things to us all.

Dear and I were in Canada the 18th and 19th of July and I snapped these photos of farms along the roads we traveled.
This last photo is not taken from our car but at our first destination in Chilliwack.
