A, the Finale…

The architecture photos are from the village of Millersburg in Holmes County, Ohio. I haven’t shared these photos on my blog before. Millersburg is in the heart of the largest Amish settlement. This is the Courthouse at the county seat.

We found the downtown to be charming with many interesting shops and original architecture.

Millersburg was incorporated February 17, 1835.

Hotel Millersburg built in 1847 is on the left. The Hotel, which has been placed on the US Department of Interior’s National Register of Historic Places, is located in the center of the Millersburg National Historic district.

Now to the present…how’s January 2017 shaping up? Things are busy here and I’ll have a lot to share later. We are still cold and icy but nothing to compare with other parts of the country.

The Buckeye State

Ohio country roads. We didn’t make it to the larger cities in Ohio like Cleveland or Columbus. On this drive we were headed to the airport in Detroit to fly back to Washington State.

First Presbyterian Church in Loudonville was having a Ham and Bean Supper. Loudonville is in the heart of Mohican Country.

Just after Hayesville we connected to Highway 30 to head west and connected to 75 north onward to Michigan. We stopped in Toledo, Ohio for lunch. Toledo was the largest city we navigated on this trip.

Holy Toledo! Many of us have heard the expression, but where did it come from?

The origin of the exclamation “Holy Toledo!” is the subject of much speculation. One suggestion is the name came about because of the heavy concentration of churches located on Collingwood Boulevard, according to the Greater Toledo Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Also, the City of Toledo, Spain, after which the American city is named, is often called “the Holy City of Toledo.”

Other suggestions of origin are not religious, but may be more likely. Holy Week has always been the worst week at the box office for show business; old-time Vaudeville actors contended that any week in Toledo was Holy Week. Toledoans Joe E. Brown and Danny Thomas popularized the term as they became nationally known performers.

to-dtw-048After driving around this area looking for a spot that was open to have lunch we settled on the Ye Olde Durty Bird. It was open and there was parking across the street. Sometimes those are the best reasons to choose a spot in a downtown area. Thankfully it was good.

Monday Mural Swiss Amish Style

Sugarcreek Ohio was originally settled by immigrants from Switzerland. It has a rich blend of Swiss culture and Amish heritage wrapped into an experience all its own. These first two murals are on buildings on Main Street in Sugarcreek, Ohio. The mural above had moving skiers coming down the slope.

With Swiss-style architecture, famous Swiss cheese and an annual Swiss Festival, Sugarcreek has become a top tourist destination in Ohio. It’s called the Little Switzerland of Ohio.

The next series of shots are from a mural in Heini’s Cheese Chalet in Millersburg, Ohio.

Heini’s Cheese Chalet is a required stop on any cheese country tour so you can see this indoor marvel, sixty feet long, painted by hand. It provides a unique perspective on the rise of Civilization. Come with us, to a time before there was cheese….

The mural begins on the left with a huge wedge of Swiss — before there was a Switzerland — crossed by nomads on camels. The mural charts evolving cheesemaking processes, consumption, and its impact to the present day, circa 1980. “Mutiny on the Bounty was partly over cheese,” explains the accompanying text, also painted by hand. The illustration style is reminiscent of a child’s guide to the Bible; though an elfish, round-faced boy with a half-eaten cheese morsel makes an appearance.

The mural concludes with a tiny billboard promoting the world’s largest wheel of cheese, a ten-ton cheddar that was here until someone accidentally kicked the plug out of its refrigerated kiosk in the 1990s.

The entire mural was painted by local artist Tom Miller. “His work,” according to Heine’s promotional literature, “is now considered to be of collectible worth with increasing value.”

I bought a basket made by four year old Amish child from this shop. Seriously…four years old, I was blown away. There were long aisles of refrigerated cases with so many cheeses that you could sample. There were other goodies, too. These large Cheese shops in Amish country were really amazing. Makes all of the food stores I frequent seem cheese challenged and sausage challenged, too.
