Grub and Goodies from the Island ~

We ate dinner at the Front Street Grill on Penn Cove in Coupeville. We had Penn Cove mussels and Coconut prawns with very yummy sauces to start off our meal. Dinner was really good and we had a nice chat with the Chef since we ate early and there weren’t a lot of customers.

The next morning we had our breakfast at the B & B and enjoyed the company of a younger couple who were staying at the Inn.

We found a few fun treasures to bring home. The hanging candle holder is from a thrift store on the main highway. It was $1.75 and I saw it at a nice gift shop for $16.95. I found the Christmas dinner plates at a shop in Langley. I paid $25.00 for 10 of them. The 4 red heavy glasses were $12.00 at an antique mall in Freeland.

So after a trip to good ole Fred Meyer today I’m pretty sure I am all done with my Christmas shopping. I was happy to find out that Fred Meyer is giving a 10% discount to 55 and older customers on Tuesdays up through December!

Hope you are all doing well while counting down the days to Christmas…

Photobucket replaced all my photos with ugly black and grey boxes and they are holding my photos hostage until I pay them lots of money. I’m slowly going through all my posts and trying to clean them up and replacing some photos. Such a bother.

Hot Thrifty Buys!

Sunday we link up over at Rhoda’s Southern Hospitality with our Thrifty buys that we’ve found at Garage/Yard Sales or Thrift Shops. Thanks Rhoda!

I’m a consistent Thrift store shopper. Once in a while Dear and I will stop at a Garage Sale. This Saturday was really hot in Southern California…in the 100’s in a lot of spots. We stopped at a few sales but the heat just got us down. We were happy to stop our searches because at our very first spot we bought this beauty!

The vinyl is in such good shape. The metal can use some work, though.

This is a nostalgia piece for me. Do I have a spot for it?….no. Do I have a red kitchen?…no. But for $10.00 I wasn’t leaving it behind.

On our way to Oxnard to see if we could find garage sales by the ocean where it might be cooler we spotted a Spud Nuts Donut Shop! The car automatically drove into the parking lot and this lovely got eaten up by moi! A very light raised iced donut! I felt like I was 5 again.

We didn’t have any luck in Oxnard so we headed to Ventura. After stopping at a few more sales braving the beating hot sun we saw this hole in the wall spot that a lot of middle-aged and older people were stopping at. We knew it was probably a great spot for good Mexican food. Johnny’s Mexican Food on Ventura Ave. in Ventura.

Cars kept driving up and we asked people who had been coming here for 30 years what they were going to order. We took some recommendations and were not disappointed. We were still hot and now very thirsty so we headed down Main St. in Ventura for one of these…

A Pierpont IPA at Anacapa Brewing Company. Very refreshing on a hot summer day. We headed home via a produce stand and bought  fresh white corn to bbq for dinner along with lamb chops. But wait this is suppose to be about thrifty treasures not food even though the white corn was 5 ears for a $1.00!

Last Saturday when it was way cooler out we stopped at a church bazaar and I bought this pair of candlesticks for $2 and this wooden sign for $1.00

On Friday my bloggy friend Willow and I went  thrift store shopping in Oxnard, Ca. All my buys were linens.

The bright Veggie label design tablecloth was $1.95. The doilies were $1.95 for all 4. The sets of napkins were 1.95 for 6 of the blue bordered ones, 95 cents for the 4 off white with little green triangles and $2.00 for the 8 red ones.

I really liked this Americana table runner and it cost 95 cents.

I’m so happy my computer has been working ok for a day that I’m posting this way early and I hope my computer continues to behave and I’ll be able to get around to see everyones treasures. Have a great week everyone…

Thrifty and Blue!

Click on the logos to visit Rhoda at Southern Hospitality for Thrifty Treasures and the Blue Bird to visit Sally for Blue Monday!

This week I’m combining my Thrifty finds with Blue Monday. My two tiered server was $3.99. I liked the yellow blue and green color scheme and set it at the center of my tablescape that I’ll show later this week. I bought packages of these old fashioned looking hankies to layer with my napkins. The hankies were 3 in a package for $1.49. The yellow tablecloth cost me $2.50 and the 6 sage green napkin rings cost $2.99. We had brunch at this table after church today and this evening we’ll be eating dinner at the same table.

Looking forward to seeing your treasures and your blue!

Three or More Tuesday ~

It’s time for Three or More at The Gypsy’s Corner. Visit Tam to join in on the fun posting anything you want that’s three or more.

I found these goodies today at my local Goodwill. Monday is Senior day and they give a 25% discount to anyone 55 or older. I bought all this stuff for $7.00. Four goblets that I think are really great, 5 napkins, and 3 Teacups and saucers. Thanks for visiting me and continuing to enable me in my Thrift store shopping addiction.

Have a wonderful Tuesday everyone!

Friday’s Fave Five ~ It’s June?

If it’s Friday it’s time for Favorites! Thanks to Susanne at Living to Tell the Story for hosting this weekly event.

My Five this week are all about some of my favorite things about the area I am living in here in Southern California.

Let’s get the food taken care of right off the bat!

#1. I love the amazing taste of strawberries fresh from the fields that I can buy at a local strawberry stand. So much more flavor then the grocery store strawberries.

#2. In nearby Somis there is a family owned Nuthouse where we buy our nuts. They really have an amazing variety. Dear is always happy to “drive me to the nuthouse”.

#3. The Camarillo Library has the best Friends of the Library bookstore I have ever been in. Here’s what I bought this week. The magazines were all 25 cents each. The 3 books on cd were $10.00 each. Pricey for me but well worth it for our upcoming road trip to Seattle the end of June. Books on cd make the hours on the road go by faster and help to keep me awake when it’s my turn to drive. I’ve never read P.D. James so I hope his Death of An Expert Witness will keep my interest. I’m looking forward to hearing The Prisoner of Azkaban instead of reading it again. Dear is a fan of most Robin Cook books so Foreign Body is for his listening pleasure.  The TeaTime book just looks like a fun read. I was happy to lay down the cash for all these to support the local library.

#4. Thrift Store Shopping. I really enjoy treasure hunting in thrift stores. I’m seasoned enough that I can walk away from great deals if I don’t really need them. Who am I kidding? Most things I buy at Thrift stores I do not need. That said… this week I found these dessert plates from Germany for 69 cents each. The napkin rings that cleaned up OK were $1.75 for all 7 of them.

#5. How very blessed I am. I can drive a short distance from my condo up or down the coast and discover new beaches. This is my latest discovery, El Matador State Beach. This beach is south of us in the northern part of Malibu. I’ll be sharing more photos from this great beach next week…

Looking forward to blog hopping to see your favorites.

2nd Time Around Tuesday

When I was at home in Washington over the Memorial Weekend I made sure to visit some of my favorite thrift stores. I found The Story of Mary Jones and Her Bible at Hidden Treasures Thrift store in Kenmore. It’s a 1932 publication from London. If you’ve never read this sweet story I highly recommend it.  This is the story of a Welsh girl from the late 1700’s whose great desire to own a Bible helped to form the British and Foreign Bible Society, an organization that has published over 4 million Bibles in 291 languages.

The sweet Welcome and Laugh Often message pillows were from Goodwill in Lynwood.

2nd Time Around Tuesday – Cake Plate

First of all I’d like to say thank-you to everyone who gave me suggestions on how to repair this cake plate I’m showing for the renamed Trash to Treasure Tuesday. Trash to Treasure is now 2nd Time Around Tuesday and our hostess is still Diane at A Picture is worth a 1,000 Words.

I bought the plate and base even though they were separated for $5.00 at a local thrift store. This was before the repair. We just set the top on the base to show what it’s suppose to look like. Dear used Super Glue Epoxy Adhesive since that’s what he already had in the garage. Here it is 24 hours after the repair. It seems to be holding firm. I will never immerse it in water but just wipe it clean when it needs it.

I really like my $5.00 thrift store purchase that will have a second time around…

To see more treasures or to join on in visit Diane at the link above…

Pink Saturday ~ Tease Revealed…

These are some items I bought at a local thrift store and I said I’d show you what they had originally been intended for.

The pretty cloth and the jewels are a shower curtain and shower curtain hooks. I don’t have a shower curtain rod in the bathroom at the condo so I had to try to get the hooks to hold up the curtain on the frame of the glass shower doors so I could show you their intended use. Now here is what I decided to use this shower curtain and jeweled hooks for…

Blue Monday

This Vase was a gift to my husband when the company he worked for was purchased by another company and it ceased to be. It was a great company to work for and it was a “Blue” day for sure when this company was no more. It’s a Kosta Boda, designed by Anna Ehrner. It’s from her Atoll collection. Atolls are circular coral islands embracing lagoons in tropical seas. By candlelight, Anna Ehrner’s crystal look like shimmering little atolls. Atoll is a uniquely designed piece of traditional Swedish glass handicraft from the Smaland province.

I bought this little creamer last week at Goodwill for $2.95. I love blue and white on dishes and creamers are a weakness of mine. I especially enjoy these old time scenes on blue and white dishes.

For more Blue Monday visit Smiling Sally. Have a wonderful week everyone.

Pink Saturday ~ Sadler Teapot

It’s time for Beverly’s Pink Saturday Again!

Today I’m showing one of my Thrift Store finds, a Sadler Teapot from England. The Pink Flowers are just a bonus!
