Baba and Deda ~ Grandchildren ~ Heritage

On Sunday afternoon my children got a rare treat of being at their Baba and Deda’s all together. My parents have been in their Senior Apartment for one year now and Katie is the only one of my kids that has had a chance to visit them there. We had dessert then 4 more grandchildren arrived and we got to listen to my Pop tell some stories about their time in Russia and Iran before they came to the U.S. The Photo below is of my Pop’s cousin who served in the Russian Army during WWII. The story my dad told us about him is below the photo…

This is Feodor Ivanovich Aryeshen. One night during patrol of the trenches, as he walked with his rifle in his hands he came face to face with a Nazi soldier. They faced each-other with their rifles pointed at each other. Then they both turned around and ran for their lives. When he woke up the next morning his hair had turned pure white! They say it was from being so frightened.

My Father told a few more stories about his life that were great for all his grandchildren to hear. What a rich wonderful afternoon we all had with my parents. What a joy to hear how God has kept them safe and close to Him for so many years. We ended our time with my Pop praying for all of us and blessing his grandchildren again…

WFMW ~ Shower Curtain?

Time for another Works For Me Wednesday and here’s my tip this week. If you have showers that need shower curtains purchase a pretty cloth one to go on the outside and then buy the cheapest vinyl liner you can find for the inside. When the vinyl curtain gets yucky just take it down and throw it away and replace it with a fresh liner. Trying to clean these is too much work for me!

There’s plenty of bathroom scrubbing to do without scrubbing the vinyl curtain!

Now head on over to Rocks in My Dryer and see what other tips there are today!

The Dean’s Watch ~ Elizabeth Goudge

Woman to Woman is hosting a Book Review Theme today.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I just finished the last page of this book and I’m so sad that the story has come to an end. Elizabeth Goudge is fast becoming my new favorite author. She has a great descriptive style. The same appreciation I have for George MacDonald and how he weaves a true loving relationship with God contrasted against a cold religious relationship is growing as deep for Goudge’s fiction. I love MacDonald’s Scottish Countryside settings and I love Goudge’s English countryside settings.

This story is built around the Dean of a Cathedral in an English City. Goudge develops the stories behind several characters within the city whose lives are touched and changed by the growing love of the Dean for his city and for them. I highly recommend this book to you. It can be hard to come by these books but start by checking your local library. I found this one at my library.

I published a quote from this book that you can read here.

I Belong to the King ~ Hymn

John 3:1 ~ See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.

I BELONG TO THE KING

I belong to the King; I’m a child of His love,
I shall dwell in His palace so fair,
For He tells of its bliss in yon heaven above,
And His children in splendor shall share.

Refrain

I belong to the King; I’m a child of His love,
And he never forsaketh His own.
He will call me some day to His palace above;
I shall dwell by His glorified throne.

I belong to the King, and He loves me I know,
For His mercy and kindness so free
Are unceasingly mine wheresoever I go,
And my Refuge unfailing is He.

Refrain

I belong to the King, and His promise is sure:
That we all shall be gathered at last
In His kingdom above, by life’s waters so pure,
When this life with its trials is past.

Refrain

I really would have liked to have had a photo of Lombard St. in San Francisco for curvy because when I think of curvy I first think of curvy roads. This curvy candle holder and sign give insight into my life. I am truly blessed and God has shed His Light into my life.

Happy Photo Hunting to you… and for more curvy photos go here.

I John ~ Walking in the Light

I John 1: 5-10 ~

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

This morning at 6:30 A.M. the power in our neighborhood went out. Our one bedroom condo was very dark. We only have 2 sets of windows in the whole condo. I had to find my little purse flashlight to find the power bill to phone the power company, etc. etc. Then I rounded up the candles and lit them. I did not enjoy being in darkness. I wanted my light back.

My Bible reading these days is I John. While waiting for the power to come back on I used my trusty little flashlight to read Ist John. It was pretty classic reading about light and darkness sitting in the dark. It is amazing to try to comprehend that there is not a stitch of darkness in God. No shifting shadows. He is LIGHT.  I’ll be chewing on this truth for a while. Until I comprehend it all one thing I know. I do not like being stuck in darkness. I’d rather be in the light.

Friday Feast #4 ~ October 5th

Appetizer
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how much do you look forward to your birthday?

Probably a Seven. I get a lot of joy in buying gifts so I actually prefer other people’s birthdays.

Soup
What is one word you don’t like the sound, spelling, or meaning of?

Streptococcus – any of several spherical bacteria of the genus streptococcus, occurring in pairs or chains, species of which cause such diseases as tonsillitis, pneumonia, and scarlet fever.

Salad
Do you wear sunglasses when you’re outside?  If so, what does your current pair look like?

Yes all the time since I live in Southern California. Because I wear prescription eye glasses my sunglasses are not very cool. They clip onto my regular glasses with a magnet.

Main Course
If you were to write a book, to whom would you dedicate it?

I would dedicate it to the family members who really love to read, my daughter Katie and my husband.

Dessert
Name a beverage that you enjoy.

I enjoy a classic G & T, with a high end G!

Show and Tell Friday ~ Pewter

When Dear and I were engaged we were really attracted to pewter items. We collected some pieces while we were in England in 1973 and l974 and then registered for pewter items for wedding gifts.

This Pewter Hurricane Lamp was a wedding gift along with this Platter and Bowl. So we’ve been using these gifts for over 32 years.

To see more Show and Tell head over to Kelli’s at There’s No Place Like Home.
