Ruby Tuesday ~ Espresso Anyone?

Here in the Seattle area we have espresso stands on almost every corner or it seems that we do. Here is a unique stand I saw on Sunday while we were in Maltby, Washington. It has been really hot for a few days here in the Seattle area so the only Espresso I’d be getting these days is iced!

This old sign was in the same area and I thought of Ruby Tuesday…

Personality Meme ~ I’ve been Tagged!

Arti at Ripple Effects has tagged me for a little meme all about my strange personality…

Arti is a very thoughtful blogger who posts great reviews of the arts in film and literature…

Thank you Arti.

Now to try to identify some personality traits of mine…

1. I tend to be compliant and a people pleaser generally. Over the years I have learned to set boundaries and I’ve become quite good at saying no. I do not compromise on my firm beliefs, though. If you want me to identify a couple of my firm beliefs I can be bold enough to do that.

#1 Accepting Jesus and His sacrifice on our behalf on the cross is the only way to peace with God and an eternal place in Heaven with Him.

#2 Abortion is the wrong choice.

2. I enjoy celebrating life with new experiences which seem to always revolve around good food and good sights and good conversation. I wonder why I’m not losing weight. :0)

3. I tend to smile a lot and am a positive person most of the time.

4. I’m a communicator. I do not like to be uninformed especially about personal things with family and friends. I’m generally the link in the family to news. I also get really pissed upset if I’m left out of the loop or I find out someone died after the funeral or was in the hospital after the fact. Come on people communicate, ask for prayer, let us serve you.

5. Worship and learning something new from God’s Word (The Bible) is very important to me and I feel disconnected without some good input every week or every day. Learning new things in general keeps me happy.

6. I love to be generous. I love to buy gifts for people. I love to feed people extravagantly.

7. I enjoy good books. Most of the books I really love are by authors who are dead. I’ve been known to cry at the end of a book because it is written so well! (like LOTR or Chronicles of Narnia or Anne of Green Gables)

So that’s it and you’ve gotten a taste of what ellen b. is like even if some of these aren’t about personality. Oh and to set the record straight I’m a whole lot more interesting on the page then in person…

Blue Monday ~ Church and Cinnamon Rolls!

It’s time to join Smiling Sally for Blue Monday. Click on the logo above to join in the fun!

When we’re in Washington we go to church with our kids to Eastlake in Bothell. It’s a great church with very loud music. I really enjoyed this blue background. Yes and church will start on the dot in 4 minutes and 17 seconds!

After church this Sunday I joined my kids with my DIL’s grandma Wilma for brunch at the Maltby Cafe in the little town of Maltby. The Maltby cafe is known for their wonderful huge cinnamon rolls. We split it 4 ways and it was more then enough. Our egg dishes were wonderful, too. I figured there is plenty of blue in my collage to qualify for Blue Monday.

Have a wonderful week everyone…

Mosaic Monday~ Botanical Garden

On Thursday I visited the Bellevue Botanical Garden and enjoyed the flowers in bloom. Several of these are different varieties of Dahlias. Mary at Little Red House is the hostess for Mosaic Monday. Click on over to see more mosaics…

Thrifty Treasures!

Visit Rhoda at Southern Hospitality to see some amazing Thrify Treasures! Here are some of mine…

I’m back in Washington State and spent some time visiting some Goodwill stores in the Puget Sound area this last week. The platter and 3 cups and saucers cost me $12.99 for all 7 pieces. It is the Melody Pattern by Franciscan Staffordshire, England. The other cup and saucer is Myott Finlandia Stafforshire England and it cost me $2.99. Pink tags were half price this past Thursday-Sunday so the sweet detailed pitcher cost me $1.98.

I got 8 of these salad/dessert plates for $6.99. They are Floral Garden ~ Tomson Pottery.

Looking forward to seeing these new treasures on a tablescape in the future. Now I’m off to see what treasures you found!

Blessings on your new week…

Sun of My Soul ~ Hymn

Sun of My Soul

Sun of my soul, Thou Savior dear,
It is not night if Thou be near;

O may no earth-born cloud arise
To hide Thee from Thy servant’s eyes!

When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My weary eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought, how sweet to rest
Forever on my Savior’s breast!

Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.

Be near to bless me when I wake,
Ere thru the world my way I take;
Abide with me till in Thy love
I lose myself in heav’n above.

Six Little Ducks…

Six Little Ducks

Six Little Ducks that I once knew, fat ones, skinny ones, fair ones, too.
But the one little duck with the feather on his back
He ruled the others with a quack quack quack
He ruled the others with a quack quack quack

Down to the meadow they would go
Wibble Wobble Wibble Wobble to and fro
But the one little duck with the feather on his back
He ruled the others with a quack quack quack
He ruled the others with a quack quack quack!

Have a great Saturday everyone. I’m off for a 6 mile walk with my buddies, after which I’m kicking up my feet and watching the Sounders Soccer Game and then I’m going to a West coast wedding reception for a friend who got married on the East Coast in June. Thankfully it’s a very casual reception since we’re expecting the temps to be close to 90 degrees.

Friday’s Fave Five ~ Where’s My Brain?

When I woke up today and wondered what day of the week it was it dawned on me that I forgot all about Friday’s Fave Five. Scramble, scramble here we go. Thank you Susanne for helping me keep my days straight! Visit Living to Tell the Story for more favorites or to join in.

1. On Sunday I was still in Southern California and Dear and I met his brother and wife for a birthday brunch at the Tam O Shanter in L.A. We don’t get together very often with T and C and it was fun to catch up a bit and enjoy a good meal together. Turning 60 is a very good excuse for a nice meal.

2. On Monday Willow and I were able to get a early morning walk in and it was hot, hot, hot already. It was good to catch up since we hadn’t walked for a couple weeks. What a surprise to see the  Jacarandas still blooming.

3. Monday evening I flew to Seattle in a smaller plane where the seats were closer together and smaller then usual (is that’s possible?) but I had a window seat and got some fun shots of Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier. I arrived in Seattle to warm temps, too.

4. Tuesday evening I joined my kids and a friend at the U.S. Open Cup game at a small venue to see the Sounders beat Houston 2-1 in overtime. It was an exciting game and fun to be right on the field. Again it was very hot.

5. Making blueberry muffins with blueberries from my bush was another fun treat this week.

My daughter’s sunburn is finally in a tolerable stage and it’s good to see her feeling so much better. Wednesday was a very hard day around here. Friday is really looking up!!

Blessings and I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve been up to.

Give Me My Babushka’s Cooking

IMGP9094

For Foodie Friday I’m posting this paragraph my daughter wrote about her Babushka’s cooking and a recipe and how to make my mom’s Borsch following it.

  • Gimme my Babushka’s cooking and I’ll be content

  • The sort of Russian/Persian cuisine that my Baba (Grandma) makes… I would be a happy camper for a year with yummy borscht, galupsi, kulyich, syrny paska, lapsha, varenky, shashlik, and a million other treats that I would butcher just as badly trying to spell in English…I can say most of them but they’re sure hard to type. Just make sure you give me a good supply of sour cream, and can I bend the rules to include my Mom’s “green borscht” which is spinach soup we chop up hardboiled eggs in? I was never entirely sure where that soup’s origins really lay…I could never get sick of all the lamb and cabbage and butter filled goodness, heck I even like the Russian candies my Deda (Grandpa) keeps around though none of my cousins do. My mouth is watering already. ~ Katie

  • Many Borsch recipes include beets in them. The familiar Borsch that we grew up with and that we had at Molokan Church Meals did not have beets in it. Here is my mother’s recipe.

    Nadia’s Borsch

    For the Stock:
1 Chuck Roast (with bone would be good)
    1 onion
    1-3 celery stalks with leaves
    2-3 carrots
    2 bay leaves
    5-10 peppercorns
    Salt to taste

In a big stock pot, cover chuck roast with good water. Bring just to boil. Take roast out of water and discard the water. Put chuck roast back in pot and cover with fresh water again. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Simmer and cook until roast is fork tender. Strain the stock. Reserve the roast.

1 head of cabbage shredded (green is what we use)
    1-3 carrots grated
    1-2 onions diced
    1 bell pepper diced

    2-3 stalks of celery diced

(saute the bell pepper, onion, celery and jalapeno then blend before adding to stock)
    2-3 potatoes diced
2 cans stewed tomatoes blended in blender (we have those that don’t like chunky tomatoes)
    1 can tomato sauce
1/2-small bunch of dill (to taste)
1 handful of chopped Italian parsley
    salt and pepper to taste
optional – 1 can of garbanzo beans
option #2 – add a small jalapeno diced to the saute group above.

Put the strained broth back into a stock pot. Add all the above ingredients and bring to a boil. Simmer until cabbage and carrots are tender. Taste and see if the soup needs more salt or pepper at this time.

    The Borsch is ready now.

My mother doesn’t include this in her recipe but when she made borsch at my house once I saw her add a half a cube of unsalted butter at the end. :) My mother mashes most of the potatoes to thicken up the soup a bit.

You can bake the chuck roast with a little of the stock, salt, pepper, and sauteed onions to serve alongside the borsch with a good loaf of bread and of course…sour cream. This was my welcome home meal for my kids on one of my trips back to Seattle a couple years ago.

I hope you enjoyed this post from my archives. I think it is high time I make borsch again and take some new pictures.
