A Flavorful Hodgepodge

For Wednesday Hodgepodge Jo comes up with the questions for us to answer. Click over to From This Side of the Pond to see more answers to the questions.

1. Just your weekly mid-week reminder that it’s fall y’all and it’s my favorite. I love nearly all the flavors of fall but let’s weigh in with an either or today…pumpkin or cranberry? hot apple cider or pumpkin spice latte? cinnamon or maple? apple or pear? ginger or sage? carrot or butternut squash? Yes you have to choose. What’s a favorite dish made with one of the flavors listed here?

Cranberry ~ Cinnamon ~ Apple ~ Ginger ~ Butternut Squash

Here’s a good recipe for a delicious soup for Fall or Winter.

Apple Butternut Squash Soup
  •  2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cups chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons mild curry powder
  • 2 large butternut squash
  • 4 sweet apples
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large cast iron dutch oven or large stockpot over low heat.
  2. Add the onions and curry powder and cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until the onions are tender.
  3. Stir and scrape the bottom of the pot every couple minutes.
  4. Peel squash, cut in half and remove seeds. Cut the squash into chunks.
  5. Peel and core the apples and cut into chunks.
  6. Add the squash, apples, salt, pepper, and 2 cups broth to pot.
  7. Bring to boil, cover, reduce heat to low and cook until the squash and apples are soft, approximately 40-50 minutes.
  8. Use a food processor or hand blender to puree the squash and apples.
  9. Return to pot if you used the food processor and taste, adding salt and pepper if needed.
  10. If the consistency is too thick add a little more broth or water and heat through.
  11. Serve with toasted walnuts and pomegranate seeds, optional.

2. Do you miss traveling? In this season of almost no travel do you think you’ve grown anxious or fearful about traveling again? Or has all this staying home not going anywhere made you restless to get out and see the world? What book have you read or what movie have you watched that has inspired you to travel?

Yes, I do miss traveling or even being able to plan a trip on paper. The only book I’ve listened to on CD this month about traveling was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.  Now that’s a special kind of traveling to be sure. 🙂 We’ve done mini travels to Coeur d’Alene Idaho the beginning of October and I’ve traveled to the suburbs of Seattle this month, too. The only movies we are watching these days are Hallmark Movies so I’m inspired to see picturesque little towns around the USA.

3. A time you felt like you were ‘flying by the seat of your pants’? Explain.

I think the place where I fly by the seat of my pants most often is in the kitchen when I have to come up with a meal on the fly and I start throwing caution to the wind with the ingredients I throw in the pot hoping the end result will be edible.

4. Do you struggle with road rage or are you more of a ‘Sunday driver’? Do you like to be ‘in the driver’s seat (literally and/or figuratively speaking) ?

Rage is a strong word. I have been known to strongly criticize other drivers on the road. I do like to be in the driver’s seat both literally and figuratively and the Lord has tempered that tendency in me over my years of being His follower. Many miles yet to go in this tempering!!

5. Something you’ve recently ‘put the brakes on’?

Regularly shopping in Thrift stores.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Our Concrete was poured on Monday and we tried to get some good handprints from Addy and Jaymison. Addy’s were easier since she can follow directions. Their little hands set in ‘concrete’. Since our niece and nephew were here on concrete day they each set a handprint.

Theirs are deep and have a 3D look.

I’m very wrapped up in the day to day with our family visitors. I will try to visit y’all soon.

Family on the Trail

I’m posting some of our gatherings in order of happenings here for the sake of history.

Before we headed to meet up with extended family on the Westside of the mountains we had some good times together in our neck of the woods with my brother’s family who are Wholly Rollin around the USA. On Saturday the 3rd of October we enjoyed breakfast together and after breakfast we hit the Rotary Trail to get some exercise.

We were still experiencing smoky skies this past weekend and the beginning of the week.

Jaymison warmed up to my brother in record time for him.

After naps on Saturday everyone gathered at our place again for dinner.

On Sunday we enjoyed dinner at Dan and Jamie’s and had a tour of their garden.

On Monday morning the kids had their home schooling (History Lesson outside) before we hit the road to the Western side of the Cascades to meet up with more family.

My brother’s family is still on the West side of the Cascades and I’m back home on the Eastside. Hope to catch up with your blogs soon.

Where in the World…

…is our traveling family?

My youngest brother and his family are having an RV adventure around the USA (Wholly-Rollin) for who knows how long. My sister Lana and her hubby Steve met up with them in South Dakota the 16th through the 19th of September and here are a couple photos I “borrowed” from them. Leonard, Mandy, Hope and Andrew will soon make it to our neck of the woods the beginning of October. Hope and Andrew are being RV schooled enjoying God’s amazing creations around the USA. They have just left the Yellowstone Area and the Grand Tetons heading to Montana.

Leonard and Lana, the babies of our family. They are twins. The Black Hills of South Dakota.

Meanwhile back in our neck of the woods,  Jaymison and Addyson enjoying the beginning of Autumn.

Addy is enjoying a carrot fresh out of the garden and JJ is always pleased to be seated on any piece of machinery!

After I got the framework of the puzzle done and a lot of the interior done, Dear helped me finish up this Matryoshka Doll puzzle. He did leave the final pieces for me. It was a tough one but satisfying to see it completed. This is our 7th COVID-19 puzzle in the books!

Have you taken up puzzles lately? Do you grow carrots in your garden? Are you part of the RVing world? What’s the favorite place you’ve traveled to in the USA?

Farewell to Summer…

…with a look back starting in June and Father’s Day.

Father’s Day on the Eastside and then on the Westside…

On to July…

Visitors of the critter variety and…

…wonderful human visitors from California.

We ended July with cherry picking.

On to August…

Parties with Addy’s first Lemonade Stand!

Outdoor projects: Painting the deck and filling in the pond.

All our kids gathered together on the Westside.

Long time friends of the family with our kids.

Back on the Eastside and fun with Baba while Daddy and Gramps worked on the shop.

Grand finale for August was getting the last panels on the shop roof!

In September…a little rearranging of the furniture.

JJ got to come over to Baba and Gramps without his big sister.

We celebrated Gramps’ birthday twice.

The last week of Summer all across the state of Washington we had smokie skies and we stayed inside and limited our activity.

Today I’m happy to report that this is what our skies look like just in time for the end of summer. We are all so thankful to have clear blue skies with white fluffy clouds.

What a relief it was to be out and about in the wonderful weather. We won’t take it for granted anytime soon.

Older than Hodgepodge

It’s time for Wednesday Hodgepodge and Jo has come up with new questions for us to ponder and answer.

1. What’s one thing you learned at the ripe old age or whatever age you are now?

Not everyone who calls themselves Christian is a true believer and follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. I read here a list of foods that can help you look younger-

extra virgin olive oil, green tea, fatty fish, dark chocolate, vegetables, flaxseeds, pomegranates, avocados, tomatoes, spices, bone broth

How many of the foods listed have you tried?

I’ve tried all on the list and now I avoid all green tea because it does not have a good effect on my digestive system, weird. Flaxseed only in certain breads by accident. 🙂

How many do you eat regularly?

Most regularly would be avocados, tomatoes, spices, vegetables and dark chocolate.

Your favorite from the list?

Avocado on toast, in an omelette, in a burrito, in a salad, BLTA, guacamole and chips and avocado mango salsa.

3. Something you miss from the ‘good old days’?

Traveling without security lines and other restrictions. The good old days when we could walk right up to the gate and welcome someone home or have someone walk right up to the gate and say their goodbyes.  Freedom to move about freely without thinking about my safety or of being blown up.

When were the good old days anyway?

Right now I’m thinking the good old days were before COVID-19. I’m missing the abundance of choices for restaurants and the shopping with ease (no masks required). The days that we could plan a trip to Great Britain and enjoy moving about the country with no restrictions.

But…I think in every stage of life we experience good days and not such good days.

4. What are two or three of the most rewarding things to be found in growing older?

Being older afforded us the joy of grandchildren and that is a wonderful reward.

Being older and retired gives us more freedom in our days. Hectic schedules are few and far between.

5. What’s your favorite part of your life right now?

Good relationships with our adult children and our grandchildren and that our children all get along without us, too!

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We along with much of the West Coast have experienced oppressive smokey skies that have brought activity to a standstill. We are looking forward to some winds from the North instead of the South and some rain later this week in hopes that the skies clear.

Our front yard looking north. The left is from August 31st and the right is on September 12th.

On Tuesday things were looking better…

Praying for our Firefighters and First Responders and for those who have lost their homes. Also praying for the two police detectives ambushed and shot in the face in the L.A. area on Saturday.

Cinderella and Her Helper…

On Saturday morning our son Dan came over with Addy and JJ bright and early with their breakfast in tow. Dan was helping Dear prepare the Shop pad for cement by putting down the vapor barrier and then putting the re-bar on top in a grid pattern and fastening it to stay in it’s grid. I’ll show photos later. The point of this story is that Addy, JJ and Baba had to fill our time together with activities. From the photos you’ll see that some may feel I over worked my two young grandchildren.

Believe it or not the three of us managed to mix up banana bread batter and get it into the oven without any “major” mishaps. We did have flour to vacuum up!

JJ only managed to get a little taste of flour in our preparations. Addy was a big help by finding the cup measures and teaspoons, etc. that Baba asked her to fetch while supervising JJ with her eagle eyes so he would be safe on the chair and wouldn’t drop too much flour on the floor. Addy measured out the ingredients except for the salt. I cracked the egg. They both are hands on helpers. They both enjoyed “washing” the dishes. Shh…don’t tell them that I re-washed them all after they left for home.

Vacuuming was the favorite activity of the morning for JJ!

We all had to stay inside the last few days because of the unhealthy air quality from the smoke from the fires on the whole West Coast!

Hope you all have a good week ahead.

Celebrating Gramps!

On the morning of Dear’s birthday September 9th our Daughter in law sent a text with these photos of Addy, JJ, and Rayna wishing Gramps a Happy Birthday. Love that Addy is singing in the first photo.

We were invited for dinner at their home on the day and enjoyed Lengua Tacos. Delicious. It wasn’t easy capturing a photo of the three of them.

The day after Dear’s birthday we headed to Chewelah for Mexican and we were treated royally by our favorite waiter.

On 9/11 this was the view of the horrible air quality in Seattle taken by one of the news agencies. Can you find the Space Needle? Our air quality in Northeastern Washington isn’t good either but it is not this bad…yet. They say we are in for the smoke coming our way from California and Oregon. We are all praying the the fires (so many of them) can be extinguished and that we can get some precipitation to clean the air. The West Coast is burning. Good time to consider your eternal destiny.

This morning Dan and the Grands are coming over. Dan will be helping Dear prepare the shop pad for the cement pour by laying the vapor barrier and the re-bar. I’ll be watching Addy and JJ while that work happens.

Morning Visitor

Outside, inside, all around the yard. JJ and Baba had fun for several hours on Friday while mommy and Addy joined Granny and Granny Great to help at their garage sale. Sales went well and not having charming, busy JJ made life easier on everyone. Addy had a great time selling things and people even offered her change just for being cute.

Hope y’all are having a good Labor Day Weekend.

Kind/Kindness

It is Tuesday August 25th and a special day in our family. Today Josh and Laura are celebrating 19 years of marriage! The word for today is Kind. You can also use kindness.

Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Share your verse/verses in the comments and I’ll add them here.

From my sister Vera:

“Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭11:22‬ ‭NASB‬‬

From Maristella:

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
Colossians 3:12 | NIV

From Anneliese:

A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself. Proverbs 11:17

From Happy One:

Genesis 1:25 KJV

And God made the beast of the earth after his KIND,
and cattle after their KIND,
and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his KIND:
and God saw that it was good.

From Pat:

“And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.” Luke 6:31

Josh and Laura love their niece and nephews and are very kind to them.

It’s a blessing from God that our kids are kind “one to another”.

Can you tell they are brothers?

They are also kind to their friends who are our friends, too.

Happy 19th Anniversary to you Josh and Laura. We love you and thank God for who you are in Him individually and together!
