Old St. Mary’s Cathedral

2016-01-21 Alice day S7

Old St. Mary’s in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The first building erected as a cathedral in California, Old St. Mary’s served the archdiocese of San Francisco in that capacity from 1854 to 1891. Once the city’s most prominent building, much of its stone work was quarried and cut in China and its brick brought “around the Horn” in sailing ships

Old St. Mary’s Church was established by Father Henry Ignatius Stark as a mission. The purpose was to teach the Chinese community about the Catholic faith. It was built by Chinese laborers in 1854 with brick brought around Cape Horn and granite cut in China. It was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and rebuilt in 1909.

St7

When I was in Chinatown with my friend Alice we got to the church after it was closed for the day. On Saturday before we left San Francisco Dear and I walked to Chinatown and we went into the church. Because of a funeral that was about to begin I didn’t feel comfortable taking too many photos of the inside.

They’ve built a new St. Mary’s that is not in Chinatown and my friend says that the people of Chinatown aren’t thrilled about traveling to go to the new church.

Linking up to InSPIREd Sunday with Beth and Sally.

Hope you all are enjoying the last weekend of January. We are here at this old house. The sun is shining through the clouds for a change and we can see some blue sky. We’ve had a very rainy week so it’s nice to see some blue mixed in with the grey clouds.

Churches and Barns…

On Saturday we took a drive to the city of Snohomish to shop about in the antique and specialty stores before it started pouring down rain.

We saw some barns on the way…

And while we walked about we saw a couple of churches. I didn’t get close enough to the churches to give you details.

Our daughter came with us on our little drive and shopping excursion and she bought a couple items and we bought one small item. We ate lunch together in the sunshine and came home in a downpour!

This coming week will be full with travel to San Francisco later in the week. Still taking any suggestions for restaurants and sights to see in San Francisco from any travelers out there. I got some good suggestions already but I’m always ready for more!

InSPIREd Sunday

I’m re-posting these photos from my visit to Grace Cathedral in San Francisco in December of 2008. I’m anticipating another visit to San Francisco at the end of January for a cancer symposium. Dear is the one who will be at the cancer symposium and I will be a tourist in San Francisco again.

Grace Cathedral is descended from the historic Grace Church, built in the Gold Rush year of 1849, and the imposing structure on the corner of California and Stockton streets that was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. San Francisco’s Crocker family gave their Nob Hill porperty, destroyed by the fire, for the building of a new cathedral.

Work began on this structure in 1928. Designed in the French Gothic style by Lewis Hobart, it was completed in 1964.

Famed for its Ghiberti doors, labyrinths, stained glass, the cathedral has become an internationally-known place of pilgrimage.

The Doors of Paradise are considered by many to be the first and greatest masterpiece of Italian Renaissance. The magnum opus of Florentine sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti (1378-1455), the doors were made for the Baptistery of Florence Cathedral (the Duomo) and told the story of the Old and New Testaments. Grace Cathedral’s doors were made from the same molds – which were later destroyed – used for the originals.

I was also impressed with several of the other doors into the cathedral and wanted to show you them, too.

One of my special treats the day I visited the Cathedral was a small orchestra practicing for a Christmas concert. It was just so beautiful to walk around the inside of the cathedral being serenaded with beautiful music that inspired me to praise God for all the wonder available to us…

So much wonder this time of year. I’m taking time to adore my savior.

Friday night we are going to have a small Raclette party at our house. Maybe I’ll take photos to share later. A dear friend of ours was the Realtor we used to buy this old house. She has not been back since 1998 to see the improvements we’ve made. I don’t know how that happened but finally she and her hubby are coming for dinner and we’ll give her a tour of the improved version of this old house. Since we will be busy with preparations for our time together I’m posting this early because I won’t be on the computer until who knows when. Hope you all are enjoying the wonders of the Christmas season!

I’ll be linking up with Beth and Sally for InSPIREd Sunday! I’ll probably be missing in action next week.

InSPIREd Sunday

While I was in California I took a walk down to the beach and through a neighborhood on the way back to my sisters. I saw a couple churches that I took some photos of.

Community Bible Church in Huntington Beach, California.

Originally known as the First Baptist Church, the Community Bible Church was dedicated in 1906, three years before Huntington Beach was incorporated.  This is one of the oldest churches still standing in Huntington Beach today.

Just along the same street I saw this quaint Catholic Church, St. Mary’s By the Sea.

In 1905, St. Mary’s was established as a mission of St. Joseph’s Parish in Santa Ana.  A former church building and property were purchased at Tenth & Orange Streets in Huntington Beach. Later the name was changed to Sts. Simon & Jude to avoid confusion with St. Mary’s Parish in Fullerton. A new church building and rectory were built in 1923 at a total cost of $21,000.

Joining Sally and Beth for InSPIREd Sunday later today.

I’m happy to report that the sun is shining brightly here in the Seattle area. It is cold, though. I made a big pot of Borsch and it’s sure to warm us up. Have a wonderful weekend!

InSPIREd Sunday

While we were in Huntington Beach before and after my brother in law’s funeral we took a side trip to visit the church we attended when we lived in Huntington Beach from 1976-1984.

Evangelical Free Church, Huntington Beach.

Our son Josh attended Joyful Noises way back in the early 80’s.  Both of our son’s were dedicated to the Lord at this church.

Josh Dan 79-834

This photo is from the baby dedication of our second son, Daniel, at E.V. Free. Our pastor at the time was Bob Thune. Dan decided he really would rather stay with the pastor instead of being handed back to me after his dedication. Too funny. You might recognize the name Thune as Bob’s brother is John Thune the honorable United States Senator from South Dakota.

One of the planters in the church yard had tiles with the names of God, our Lord on it.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe. Proverbs 18:10

InSPIREd Sunday ~

This is the memorial chapel of the Tolt Congregational Church in Carnation, Washington with history on how it came about. The chapel was built in memory of Nan Fullerton Stewart and dedicated in 1938.

FIRE DESTROYS CHURCH

In 1936, the frame church was destroyed by fire.  Plans to rebuild were made immediately.  Land was acquired at the present site on Tolt Avenue between West Morrison and Rutherford Streets.  Mrs. Elbridge H. Stuart had taken an active interest in the project, and following her untimely death in 1936, her husband offered to build a chapel there in her memory.  The story of rebuilding the church is recorded in the Pulpit Bible Record this way:

Tuesday, July 27, 1937, was wet and stormy at Carnation.  The minister and his wife debated about the wisdom of calling in such weather.  However, they decided to go, and since they had never met the Stuarts, who spend their summers at Carnation Farm, the called there.

Mrs. Stuart was at “Nan’s Play House” and welcomed her callers there in a gracious manner.  Mrs. Pendleton told Mrs. Stuart of the fire on December 30, 1936, which had partially destroyed the old Carnation Church building, and of the effort the local people were making to rebuild.  At the conclusion of the call Mrs. Stuart gave the minister and his wife a delicious fruit cake she had made herself.

On Saturday, August 14, Mrs. Stuart called at the parsonage and gave Mrs. Pendleton seventeen dollars toward the new church.  She visited a while and told of her plans to secure the help of Seattle friends and plan for a big garden party at the Farm next year to raise funds to help the church.

The following evening Mrs. Stuart and two friends attended the Sunday evening church service, then being held in the Adventist Church building.  She placed Six Dollars and Fifty Cents on the offering plate, remained after the service and met everybody.  She said she had had a “lovely time.”  That evening she returned home and interested her guests in the work of the little church.

Friday night, August 20, Mrs. Stuart went to bed and quietly passed to the life beyond.  Tuesday afternoon at the Stuart farm home a beautiful service was held in her memory.

Saturday morning, September 4, Mr. E. H. Stuart called at the parsonage, expressing his desire to make a memorial gift to the church in which Mrs. Stuart had become interested.

Monday morning, September 6, Mr. Stuart said he was considering the erection of a memorial chapel in memory of his late wife.  On Wednesday he authorized the minister to present to the church the conditions under which he desired to proceed.  At a called meeting of the Tolt Congregational Church the members voted unanimously to accept Mr. Stuart’s offer.

Ground was broken at a special service on January 30, 1938, and on August 28, 1938 the Nan Fullerton Stuart Memorial Chapel was dedicated.

The church voted to use the Seventeen Dollars given to the church by Mrs. Nan Fullerton Stuart to purchase this pulpit Bible to be used on the lectern.

Dear and I walked along Tolt Avenue (Highway 203) in Carnation last week. The city of Carnation used to be called Tolt.

“Carnation (previously Tolt), a rural community along the Snoqualmie River in eastern King County, was founded early in the settlement of the county. The town was named after the world-famous Carnation Dairy, a dairy operation that located in Tolt in 1910.”

I have some great signs to share in the future from our walk along Tolt Avenue.

Hope your weekend is going well. Mine is filled to the brim with a variety of emotional events. Joyful things and hard things and mundane things all mixed in. I’ve got a hunk of meat in the slow cooker. I’m delivering some lunch to some loved ones working hard today. Looking forward to a Baby shower later tonight. The shower is for a little Warrior baby who is fighting hard in the NICU. He started out at 1#7oz. and is now over 5#’s but still needs lots of prayer and care. Another close family member is in Intensive Care after a massive heart attack.

Praying “thy kingdom come, thy will be done” and singing “Abide With Me”.

…Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21.

Sunday Hymn & Spires

May the Mind of Christ, My Savior

May the mind of Christ, my Savior,
Live in me from day to day,
By His love and power controlling
All I do and say.

May the Word of God dwell richly
In my heart from hour to hour,
So that all may see I triumph
Only through His power.

May the peace of God my Father
Rule my life in everything,
That I may be calm to comfort
Sick and sorrowing.

May the love of Jesus fill me
As the waters fill the sea;
Him exalting, self abasing,
This is victory.

May I run the race before me,
Strong and brave to face the foe,
Looking only unto Jesus
As I onward go.

May His beauty rest upon me,
As I seek the lost to win,
And may they forget the channel,
Seeing only Him.

Words: Kate B. Wilkinson

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Philippians 2:5-8 (ESV)

Backroads of Washington…

Holy Rosary in Tonasket, Washington. The whole city of Tonasket was on level 3 evacuation notice last week. The level was later lowered.

These churches are in areas of Washington that have been on fire watch and evacuation notice. We continue to pray for containment of the many fires still burning in Washington State. We have a mountain range between us and the major fire areas and the last couple days the smoke has traveled over the Cascade Mountain range and is hanging in the air in Western Washington. The setting sun was orange yesterday. Rain without lightning would be a very welcome event.

Today for our Sunday Worship the church doors were closed and we had over 2000 volunteers go out to our area schools to spruce up the grounds and help teachers in their classrooms get ready for the new year. Community Serve Day is a great event that we have the privilege to participate in as a church every year. Here’s a collage of Dear getting areas ready for fresh paint before the event today. Today he painted the brick wall that he pressure washed on Friday. I helped in one of the classrooms doing whatever the teacher asked of me.

I took this photo well before I owned a digital camera from the Ancient Roman Baths. Dear and Katie are next to the statue with Bath Abbey behind them. This was on a graduation gift trip we took our daughter Katie on in 2004. Ha! My photo even has the date stamp on it ’04 4 11. Bath was on the itinerary because we were visiting Katie’s favorite author’s haunts. We traced some of Jane Austen’s inspirations here. We visited some special spots related to C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, and Monty Python, too.
