Just Because…

…today marks my sixty sixth year on this earth, I reflect.

I was the fifth child born to my Russian immigrant parents.

I arrived on the scene just four years after my parents settled in East Los Angeles from Tehran, Iran.

Our first sister died before she turned two in Iran and that’s why you only see four of the five of us born to my parents here.

Our mom always made sure we had new clothes for going to church on Easter and Christmas.

After 7 years of being the baby of the family my brother Tim arrived. We were still in the black and white photograph era. In the fourth grade I memorized these verses from the Bible in the King James Version and these verses are still among my favorite from God’s Word. I was on a journey that would lead me to a significant event in my life when I was twelve. I’ll share that in a later post.

John 14: 1-3 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

After Tim and moving on to the color film era three more siblings were added to our family, the last two being twins. Oops, my older brother Fred is absent from the photo above. These reflections are from my first eighteen years.

I will add more reflections on my sixty six years in the days to come. For now the most significant change that will come to me in my sixty sixth year is that I will be able to hold my first grand baby, Addy, for the first time.

That will be a very nice gift for my sixty sixth year as I move on to the Baba/Grandmother stage of my life. More to come. I’m headed out on a little birthday adventure with Dear today. I am blessed. I’ll check in later to see your posts.

Linking up to ABC Wednesday for J is for Just because…thank you jubilant hosts.

Happy Birthday to Our Katie Kat…

She is such a great character. She is comfortable in her own skin and in other skins or onesies, too. The “Kat” photos were all taken on our Christmas morning walk.

She’s the little girl we didn’t know we wanted but are so thankful to God for blessing our home with. The collage above are photos of Katie in 2016.

Christmas Eve 013She has been an avid reader since very early on. At the age of four she read a sign at the beach “caution low head clearance” out loud while walking with our friend. We knew we had a prolific reader. What we didn’t realize is that she could read even before she was four!

We think she’d be a great books on cd reader. She’s read so many genres and she has dramatic skills. So if anyone knows of a lead for her to get into that line of work let me know.

Tomorrow we will have a little outing with Katie and Andrew to celebrate her so our festivities continue which is why I’m scarce on line.

Happy Birthday Dear Katie!

We just got word that our Eastern Washington Kids have made it safe over the snowy pass and are through Spokane with about 60 miles to go before reaching home sweet home.

djs-new-digs

More snow has fallen since they left here to come to our house for Christmas. We hope they can make it up their drive without having to plow it!

Are you all recovering from good food and frolic? Hope all is well and that you are content.

So this happened this past Saturday. My 93 year old pop got his turn to hit the pinata at his great granddaughter’s 7th birthday party! I’m glad they didn’t blindfold him! He was really tuckered out after the long drive and all the fun of this day.

and remember to do his commandments.

This celebration was at the end of April of 2013 and my mom passed away in September of 2013.

My pop meeting his newest grandson in January of 2015. Andrew was adopted from the Ukraine in 2014. Early in 2015 my pop finally realized it was time for him to move in with my sister Kathy’s family.

At my sister’s home he’s enjoying his pastime from long ago and helping his days go by while putting together jigsaw puzzles again. This next photo is of Pop enjoying his favorite chair at his new place at my sister’s home.

I’m cracking up at his finger on the remote with the new puzzle in his lap. You can see the edge of the latest puzzle he is working on in the bottom left of that photo.

This is a mish mosh photo tribute to my pop. I love my pop and thank God for him and his love and care for me and our whole family over the years. His best support currently have been his prayers for each of us every night before he goes to bed, on his knees, next to his bed. Happy Birthday Pop!

Birthday Five!

2016-03-16 St

Monday the 14th was my medicare and concessions birthday! When you reach my age you should celebrate for more than a day and as I write this post I’m on my 5th day of celebrating! Today I’m sharing 5 wonderful birthday encouragements I received.

2016-03-14 bellingham

(1) Dear and I were able to celebrate with the B.C. Mennonite Girls and their husbands on Sunday in Bellingham, Washington for brunch/lunch. The British Columbia girls came across the line. It was enough for me to celebrate over a meal but they showered me with gifts, too. These girls have been such a blessing in my life and I thank God regularly for each of them. I received many wonderful encouragements in the cards they gave me.

2016-03-16 St1

(2) On my actual birthday we met our kids on the western side of the Cascades for dinner. Our middle son and his bride live 5-1/2 hours away so they couldn’t join us. Dan called me before dinner to wish me a happy birthday. I love the cards I got from my kids with a good page full of words that always mean so much to me.

St. Pat's 013

Josh and Laura gifted me Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life and a Peter Rabbit bunting kit. They know I love all things Beatrix Potter. Katie made that card and wrote a page full of thoughts that blessed me dearly.

(3) These two are my youngest brother’s kiddos and they are my youngest niece and nephew. They called and sang happy birthday to me. They live in Texas.

(4) My dear old pop called to wish me a happy birthday. He lives with my oldest sister in Southern California. We talked about the jigsaw puzzles I sent him and I thanked him for the cold hard cash he sent me. This black and white photo is taken in the 50’s during a camping trip probably at Big Bear in the San Bernardino mountains in Southern California. I’m the one with the buster brown hairdo and my oldest sister Kathy is standing. Jigsaw puzzles have become my pop’s favorite thing to do again at 92 soon to be 93 to pass the hours away. He reminded me again that he prays for me every day.

(5) I received many birthday wishes on Facebook and one of my dear old friends from junior high/high school messaged me and her sentiments made me cry. Another dear friend called on my birthday morning and expressed her wishes and love for me and I cried again. Good tears…

2016-03-17 vancouver

I’m writing this post from our hotel room in Vancouver B.C. where Dear and I continue to celebrate my birthday with an overnight trip. Vancouver is about a 2-1/2 to 3 hour trip from our home in Washington State. It’s always fun to cross the border into another country where English is spoken! Tomorrow we will take a ride on the hop on hop off trolley to take in much of what this grand city has to offer before we head home. I’ll come around to visit you all when we get home…

Linking up with Amy for Five on Friday at Love Made My Home and with  Susanne at Living to Tell the Story for Friday’s Fave Five.

Susanne’s daughter is getting married next weekend so I’m wondering if she’ll even have time to post for Friday’s Fave Five…

Thank you ladies for hosting!

Tuesday’s Treasures

chicken rolls 004

These treasures are from the late seventies and early eighties. Christmas Craft shows became real popular in these years and after our Josh was born I saw this sweet pillow covering that a crafter made. I ordered one for Joshua. When Daniel was born 2 years later I wanted one for him, too. Thankfully the same crafter was at a sale I went to. Sadly when Katie was born I didn’t find anything like these to have made for her. She got plenty of her own treasures and she knows Jesus Loves her, too, so I’m good with the fact that she doesn’t have one of these pillows! If you don’t have a pillow like this rest assured that Jesus loves you, too!!

I pulled these two pillows out at Christmas to add them to the beds set for each of our boys and their wives for their overnight stays. I’m sharing these this week since both our boys celebrated birthdays the last 3 days! They are both in the second half of thirty this year!

I’m linking up with Tom The Backroads Traveler for his Tuesday’s Treasures.

B is for Birthday Blessings!

Two of our sons and our new daughter-in-law have birthdays in January (15, 16, 19) along with a nephew, brother and niece (16, 22, 25). On Friday night last we had an early birthday dinner celebration for our oldest, Josh.

Since we were having a couple Russian dishes for the main meal the table was set in a Russian theme.

We had Loppsha (Russian Noodle Soup) for our starter.

Our main dish was Golubstzi (phonetic spelling of the Russian pronunciation) for cabbage rolls. This photo is from another time we had this dish.  I forgot to take a new photo on Friday night.

I’m linking up to ABC Wednesday started by Mrs. Nesbitt and administrated by Roger and a team of volunteers. Thank you!

Thirty Years!

Our youngest turned thirty today. We started celebrating yesterday.

Our daughters and I went to the Queen Mary Tea Room to celebrate birthdays on Boxing day.

Laura and Katie have birthdays in December and Jamie, Dan, and Josh have birthdays in January.

It was Jamie’s first time to enjoy a formal tea. Pinkies up!

Later on boxing day Katie had some old friends over to celebrate with a Raclette meal and we had cake!

We gave Katie her gifts at breakfast time this morning before she and Andrew headed out to an early showing of the new Star Wars movie. The fun just goes on and on…

We’re enjoying the last few hours with Dan and Jamie before they fly back to Eastern Washington tonight.

Photobucket is holding all my photos from 2007-2015 hostage on their site. All my photos that I stored and uploaded from that site are now big ugly black and grey boxes with a message to pay big bucks to get them restored to my blog. It will take me a long time to restore thousands of posts.

Celebrating Together…

We came together on Sunday morning to celebrate Dear and my 41st wedding anniversary and our dear daughter in law’s birthday at Palisade Restaurant in Seattle. Our daughter Katie has a birthday at the end of the month so we started her celebration, too.

Have you seen these great nail wraps from Jamberry? Katie added these Christmas wraps on her nails for December.

Four of our six were able to celebrate together. We missed having Dan and Jamie with us but a 6 hour drive is a little tough to make especially when there is a snowy mountain pass between us.

Love these faces!

Forty one years together that we are thankful to God for.

This was a first for Dear and Me! Neither of us had ever had a Santa photo taken before!

We didn’t take our kids for Santa photos either. We all had fun taking one this year since Santa and Mrs. Claus were in the buffet room at Palisade! Speaking of the Brunch Buffet…it was amazing. I think one of my favorites was the Prime Rib Hash…

The views from Palisade are fabulous. Can you see the Space Needle?

Zoom, zoom…

We really had a wonderful weekend. Now we are full speed ahead on our Christmas preparations! We don’t have the tree up yet but I’m done with the Christmas cards except for two illusive addresses…

How’s it going at your house?

Saturday I turn 64!

img818My life started when I was little in East Los Angeles.

img817I was a real swinger.

postcardsmisc012

Black and Whites1I started out a brunette and then became a blond and then switched back to brunette. Now I’m suppose to be gray, but funny thing, I’m still a brunette and I owe all the credit to my fine hairdresser, Sherri Bell.

img331Kindergarten at Montebello Gardens Primary School. This school only went to the 3rd grade at this time. Starting in the 4th grade we were bused up to Montebello (over the Rio Hondo river) to Fremont Elementary. Montebello Gardens (not a garden by any stretch of the imagination) is part of Pico Rivera. (Top Row Left with my Buster Brown “do”)

img332Mrs. Nicolaus my 1st and 2nd grade teacher was one of a handful of my teachers that I knew was fond of me. I was a voracious reader and she recommended that I be skipped from 2nd grade to 3rd grade. (Top Row left with my curly “do”)

img333The majority of the children I went to school with in my primary school days were Mexican/American. Of course now the politically correct title is Hispanic. My growing up experiences were not in the era of political correctness. (Top Row right with my Buster Brown askew)

I tried to count the candles on this cake to see what birthday it was. It looks like 7 but I’m not sure. This was at our house in Montebello Gardens/Pico Rivera, 4635 Oak Street. It’s funny how the old addresses stick in my head. My sister Kathy on the right with my cousin Jim Loscutoff. On the left is my brother Fred and my sister Vera.

img645Since my brother Tim looks like he’s 1 in this photo I’m 8 years old.

I know this is later than the photo above since my brother Steve is sitting in the highchair and my cousin Tanya is sitting at the table. My best guess is that this is 1960 since my brother Steve was born in December of 1959 (my 9th birthday). My cousin Valia, cousin Vera, cousin John, and cousin Walter blurred along with my brother Fred blurred.  Looks like a store bought cake for this year…

When I was in the 5th grade we moved across the river into Montebello and I was able to walk to school. During my 4th grade year I was bused. Speaking of 4th grade, I talked too much and my handwriting was messy. Funny how the criticisms stick with you all your life. My 5th grade teacher gave me the distinct impression that she did not like me at all. She made me stand up once in class to chastise me and I remember thinking in my head “I may be standing up on the outside but I’m sitting down on the inside!”  My 6th grade teacher was a gem who encouraged me with his kindness.  I worked in the cafeteria in the 6th grade and got free lunches. The cafeteria ladies were another group of adults who encouraged me.

P1050481This year it’s time to sing that great Beatles tune, “When I’m Sixty Four” and appropriately this photo of me is taken in jolly old England and I still have an attitude!

“When I’m Sixty Four”

When I get older losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I’d been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I’m sixty-four? You’ll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride
Doing the garden, digging the weeds
Who could ask for more?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I’m sixty-four? Every summer we can rent a cottage in the Isle of Wight
If it’s not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck & Dave Send me a postcard, drop me a line
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I’m sixty-four?
Ho!

fam xmas 003

Tonight (Friday) we are going out to dinner with some wonderful friends of ours and on Saturday (my actual birthday) I’ll be going to the Sounders Soccer game with Josh and Laura. We’ll celebrate my birthday and Katie and Andrew’s anniversary on Sunday. We are being threatened with a mighty storm on my birthday…what does the weekend hold for you?
Thank you Lord for saving me and leading me all these years!
