More Thrift Store Goodies…

This is a busy weekend for my extended family. Graduations, birthdays, baby shower, and wedding shower, all packed into two days. The women on my side of the family are hosting a shower on Sunday for our future niece/cousin/granddaughter. Lot’s of organizing, cooking, and putting together. Hopefully I’ll have photos to share. I’ll be on the road through L.A. and onto Orange County for the festivities. So before I head into craziville I took a moment at the local thrift store and look what I found.

This Old Foley, James Kent LTD, Made in England, “Harmony Rose” bowl for $1.25.

This Wedgewood cup and saucer for $.75.

Have a wonderful weekend. Think of me while I try to create my very first cake with fondant icing. If it works I’ll be sure to post a photo.

ABC Wednesday ~ S is for…

S is for Santa Barbara, California.

Some people call Santa Barbara “The American Riviera”. This beautiful city on the Pacific Ocean has so much style and charm.  Along State St. you have many eating and shopping options. You get a very international feel when you catch several different languages being spoken. Santa Barbara is about 300 miles South of San Francisco and 90 miles North of Los Angeles. Just 40 miles North from my home.

State Street and the whole downtown area is very pedestrian friendly. There are many wonderful open air arcades for shopping and people watching.

 

Here are just a few of the Arcades.

 

Some of the Arcades have Sculptures to enjoy.

 

The Santa Barbara Art Museum is also located on State Street and of course you can view some great old relics and Statues or a Monet.

 

 

You’ll also find the Mission Santa Barbara up against the mountains. Some call this mission the “Queen” of the California historic Missions.

If you ever travel to California make sure and put Santa Barbara on your “must see” list but be aware that it can be very pricey to stay here.

Now back to my hometown. Horses and ranches have great histiorical significance in Camarillo. Camarillo is named after Adolfo Camarillo. He was a rancher and is known for his famous White Horse which now is called the Camarillo White Horse. You’ll see these famous horses ridden in the Rose Parade. These are some of the Silver saddles from the Camarillo Ranch House Estate…

Santa Barbara

So on Saturday I decided to head North 40 miles to Santa Barbara to take care of some business at Nordstrom and then have a leisurely walk around town.

 

I headed up State Street to find the Nordstrom. Santa Barbara has some great Mission Architecture.

 

Even the Nordstrom here is designed to fit into the neighborhood. I love the architecture of the store. The wallpaper in the dressing room was really fun and I had to take some shots while waiting to be “fitted”. When the evil deed was done and my pocketbook was highly debited and my 2 small purchases were put in this huge sale bag (too bad what I bought was not on sale), I headed out to explore the historic town.

 

This Lewis & Clark store was one of my favorites with a great variety of stuff shown in the next collage.

 

Lots of china, silver, vintage aprons, vintage ware, and whimsy. Time to find some lunch…

 

I chose Barcliff & Bair. It was a nice spot right on State Street with outdoor tables. I chose the inside because it was overcast and sprinkly at this point in the day. I had Harney and Sons Earl Grey Supreme, a grilled chicken and brie sandwich with peppers and onions, and a cup of 3 bean soup. Very nice. I then went to do a little more shopping.

 

I found a consignment shop on State that I’d come back to in the future. I thought this china cup and saucer would be a good mate to my Royal Albert one I found at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. This one is Cambridge, Pink Mist, made in England. I think those are Dogwood blooms which I love. This beauty was $10.00. That is not my usual thrift store bargain price but I was happy to spend it anyway for this sweet cup and saucer.

I also made a side trip to the Santa Barbara Art Museum and the Santa Barbara Mission but I’ll leave that for another post…

I got home and found out that Dear had made it to our home in the Seattle area safe and sound. He flies home tomorrow morning and I’ll pick him up at the airport. He and our daughter were on their way to our favorite Mexican restaurnant in Kirkland because there was no food in the house :0)

Home Alone ~ What to Do?

Since Dear is somewhere north of Redding, California delivering a car from Southern California to Washington State for our daughter, I’m without my Saturday morning walking buddy. What should I do with my day all alone?

 

It’s coffee for one this morning so I decided to pull out the French Press.

 

Perfect amount for my big mug.

 

Well let’s see. My kitchen is clean already. My bathroom is clean already.

 

My livingroom is clean. My bed is made and the bedroom is clean. My office is OK. My huge garden is weeded and watered. Hmmm, and here it is 8:00 am already.

So I’m debating, should I go to Santa Barbara to pick up some necessities at Nordstrom? Our Nordstrom in Thousand Oaks doesn’t open until the fall and I hate to drive to the San Fernando Valley for the closer Nordstrom. Or maybe I should just drive up to Ventura and do some thrift store shopping. Decisions, decisions. Have a wonderful Holiday weekend everyone!

Thrift Store Treasures

So my walking numbers are way down this week after my high stepping totals last week. I’ve been sidetracked this week. I decided to clean out my kitchen cupboards and reorganize them so it’s easier to work. I had 3 bags of stuff to donate to the local thrift store. Things that just aren’t working in the condo. I have another box full of stuff to take back to the Mother ship in Seattle. Just when I was ahead I had a great shopping day at none other than Goodwill.

 

6 Water Goblets with roses etched on them (all 6 for 2.99), Tea Pot and two tea cups $2.99, A three piece cream and gold tea place setting for $1.99 (Kahla, East Germany), A Tiffany and Co. Ice bucket for 1.99.

A Limoges little basket dish for $1.99

 

There were 11 of these little vases that are designed to be place card holders. I got the set of 11 for $4.99.

Now the big decision on what to leave here and what to send to the Mother Ship…

I’m headed to Orange County today to meet some of my family at a Persian Restaurant to celebrate my father’s 85th birthday. I’ll try to catch up with y’all tomorrow. Have a wonderful day.

Rose Bowl Flea Market ~ Tea Venue?

Although we couldn’t have a proper tea at the flea market, we could certainly buy everything we’d need to host a beautiful High Tea! So I’m going outside the box as LaTeaDah suggested and show you what we saw at the huge wonderful Rose Bowl Flea Market. I’m also going to include a couple shots of pretties for tea that I found at a local shop in Camarillo and a collage of Royal Albert goodies from the Royal Doulton shop in the Camarillo Outlet Mall.

The Rose Bowl is in Pasadena, California. It’s probably best known for the Rose Bowl Football Game on January 1st every year and for UCLA regular season football games. We arrived at 7:00am for one of the early bird entries for $15.00. The 9:00 am entry is $10.00.

 

We saw so many wonderful vintage hats and clothes.

 

These Russian “podstakaniki” (tea glass holders) were incredibly expensive.

 

Tables and ground space was covered with all kinds of oldies but goodies.

 

There were many vintage themed spaces.

Any kind of tablecloth you’d want. There was one stall where they just had piles of old vintage and lace tablecloths, napkins, tea towels piled in mounds. Tablecloths for $8 each and the napkin pile for $1 each. There were plenty with stains on them but a fair amount of them were stain free.

 

Rows and Rows and Rows of stuff. See how empty the walk-way is. That’s the advantage of coming in early. It was filled with people at 10:00 am.

 

There were many pretty tea cups and accessories. Some spaces had complete tea sets and old sets of china to sell also. They ranged from $75.00 to $700.00. The $700.00 set was a complete service for 12 with covered vegetable dishes, etc. (English) Now here are some goodies from my home town of Camarillo.

 

These first two shots are from a new shop in Camarillo. Most of this stuff is made in China. It’s priced reasonably.

 

Camarillo also has a popular Outlet Mall Center. One of the shops in the center is the Royal Doulton shop where you can buy Royal Albert items. Here’s a collage of some of the patterns offered there.

 

Before I sign off here are the 3 items I bought at the Rose Bowl Flea Market.

My favorite purchase was this The Wind in the WillowsTea Pot made by Sadler (England). This was fun for me to find because I just read The Wind in the Willows this year. I’m on a quest to read many children’s classics that I somehow missed reading in my youth.

Saturday at Lowe’s and Beyond

Well what do you do when you are still recovering from lower back pain issues and can’t take your usual long beach walk or long canyon hike? You go with the hubby to one of his favorite spots and take the opportunity to walk and stretch and keep your muscles from painful stiffness.

 

BUT while he is busy looking at tools you escape to the garden department and pretend you’re in an English Garden and take these photos.

 

 

 

 

Then since you are already in Ventura why not have Second Breakfast at your favorite Ventura breakfast spot Allison’s Country Cafe?!

 On the way home we stopped at the Friends of the Library in Camarillo to shop for some bargain books. Here are my two finds for the day.

 

Both of these books have such wonderful illustrations. Dear bought 3 Audel Carpenter’s and Builder’s Library books.
