On Thursday morning I boarded a plane to Fresno, Ca. to meet up with Lovella, Anneliese and Judy to attend the MCC West Coast Mennonite Relief Sale and Auction.

Mennonite Central Committee was established in 1920 to provide relief for hungry families in southern Russia. Since then it has sent food, clothing, medical supplies and more to suffering people around the world. MCC works in partnership with local churches, community associations, government agencies and international organizations. All is done in the name of Christ.

Local farmers donated some of their crops of raisins and almonds to sell. Pies were baked from scratch with fresh ingredients from the area to raise money. Apricot, Rhubarb, Boysenberry, Peach, Cherry and Apple pies were tempting us all day long. Handcrafted cheese and jams were also available for sale. Frozen Vareniki and German Sausage was sold frozen by the dozen.

Hundreds of people gathered on the main campus of Fresno Pacific University to bid on handmade quilts and other hand made items.

A variety of ethnic foods were available for purchase including many Mennonite favorites like Zwieback, Borscht, Vareniki and Portzelky.

So what were the Mennonite Girls doing while they were in Fresno at the sale?

First off we were being amazed at the downpour of rain on Friday. The out of the ordinary deluge put a damper on the beginning of the sale with many events being cancelled and others brought indoors. We presented our story on Friday night and signed books for anyone who was willing to brave the flooding streets and soggy grounds.

On Saturday morning things looked brighter and we had a very good turnout for our cooking demonstration.

We demonstrated another Mennonite favorite called Rollkuchen and served it with watermelon which is a classic summer treat.

We met many wonderful people and were treated so kindly by the couple who coordinates the event and makes it run smoothly. Kevin and his wife Rose were amazing. In the midst of everything they were in charge of they made us feel like we were their top priority. How they pulled that off put us in awe of their work ethic and dedication to this volunteer job. This is Kevin’s wife Rose with us along with their extended family. Rose made the aprons for all the girls in her family. Here’s Kevin introducing us to the crowd in the auction hall.

We were blown away when some of our books were auctioned off for a direct donation to the Good Shepherd Shelter in the Ukraine (a MCC project). One participant bid $1000 for a book. At least $2000 was raised for our Green House Project at the Good Shepherd Shelter.

We also had so much fun talking to people who came to our table to get their books signed.

My friend and cousin by marriage lives in the area and I got to spend some time with her. She and I were Home Economics Majors at Cal State L.A. and became good friends and then she married my cousin. One of my good friends from our former Seattle church texted her cousin’s family who live in Fresno and told them to make sure to look me up at the sale. It was so much fun to meet them.

When we weren’t busy at the sale we had some good brain storming times for some future obligations. We also had time to enjoy some good meals out. We all were on the same plane from Fresno to Seattle and sat together and debriefed. I left the girls when we touched down in Seattle and they rushed off to catch their connecting flight to Vancouver.
It was a rewarding 4 days and we are thankful to God for our safe travels in the air and on the ground in Fresno, especially during the rain storms that flooded many streets in the Fresno area. Here’s a photo Lovella took from the car on Friday on the flooded streets! Judy from My Front Porch has a wonderful recap with a great flood shot, too. One more recap to share with you. Here’s Anneliese’s story…
I’m adding some of the other girls photos to my post so I have them all here together for my memory of this event.

It’s good to be back home again. After Dear picked me up from the airport we headed north to La Conner for lunch and some time at the tulip festival. I’ll show those photos later.
I’m linking up with Mary for Mosaic Monday. I hope to be around soon to see what everyone has been up to.

Great Source of unexhausted good,
Who givest us health and friends and food
And peace and calm content;
Like fragrant incense, to the skies,
Let songs of grateful praises rise
For all Thy blessings lent.
Through all the dangers of the day,
Thy providence attends our way,
To guard us and to guide;
Thy grace directs our wandering will,
And warns us, lest seducing ill
Allure our souls aside.
To Thee our lives, our all, we owe,
Our peace and sweetest joys below,
And brightest hopes above;
Then let our lives, and all that’s ours,
Our souls, and all our active powers,
Be sacred to Thy love.

What a great week starting off with a glorious Easter celebration. My 5 favorites are all about Easter.
1. Easter services at church. I love to see the little ones come all dolled up in their spring finery. I love to sing the wonderful Easter songs.
2. Flowers that bloom at Easter time are another favorite.
3. Russian Easter Bread with Sweet Cheese spread are two traditional things we always have at Easter.
4. Easter meals that we enjoy with loved ones.
5. That Jesus paid the penalty for me and opened up the door for me to have a relationship and new life in Him.
Anneliese, Judy, Lovella and I are all in one of our hotel rooms typing away on our computers. So classic. I’ll share more about Fresno next week. We hit the ground running tomorrow. Have a great weekend!

Flying south to Fresno and meeting up with some of these gals for this conference.
If you live in the Fresno area come on out and say hi!
As usual when I’m away from home I’m not sure what or if I’ll be posting the next few days.
Wanted to give a shout out to our Son in law Andrew because today is his birthday!

We are blessed this year with weddings in March, April and May! Saturday past I was honored to attend the Mermaid Bridal Shower for our dear friend Lucy. Lucy’s sister Bridget carried out the theme beautifully as you will see in my photos. Lucy’s youngest sister Jamie was our Katie’s Maid of Honor.
Dear and I became friends with Lucy’s parents when we all lived in Ventura, California. Lucy’s father delivered our daughter Katie in Ventura in 1985. Lucy’s mom Jody has been a really good friend and walking buddy to me for many years. We thank God for our friendship.

The mermaid/sea theme was great with shrimp and sushi and a sand castle cake.

See the little mermaids dangling on the champagne flutes?

Bridget made these seashell tiaras to use for photos with all the guests.

How wonderful to take the time to pray over the bride for her and her groom at the bridal shower.

Lucy with our DIL Laura

Our hostess Bridget with the guest of honor Lucy and our DIL Laura. Our son Josh and our DIL Laura are standing on Lucy’s side at the wedding along with Bridget and her husband and Lucy’s youngest sister Jamie. I really like that idea of having people that are close to you as couples or singles standing with you.
I’m linking up with Kathleen at Cuisine Kathleen for Let’s Dish. Let’s Dish comes on line at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday nights.
…and we haven’t even seen the professional shots.

Andrew and Katie

Our son Josh walking me in…

Our son Dan walking my parents in…

Andrew walking his step mom and dad in…

Jackson and Hope walking in just before Dear and Katie.
The fun times just keep on rolling in…
Whenever a new bill comes in from the wedding we say,
“It’s the gift that keeps on giving”
Some of the helium balloons we had filled with the Marine Eagle, Anchor, and Globe insignia are still flying high. Oorah! (It’s been 4 weeks!)

We still have a few bottles of wine from the wedding that we bring out for fun occasions.

We are looking forward to the professional wedding photos taken on the day of the wedding.
Totally random but I think it’s so cool. Here is my nephew Joe in Jordan. He’s been studying in Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Israel from Westmont College. That’s why he missed Andrew and Katie’s wedding. We’re looking forward to seeing him at his brother Levi’s wedding in May.

Joseph on his camel in the desert…just seems right!

We are in the process of deciding on the color for our new roof that will be installed beginning in May. More fun times ahead. I’ll need to make sure and take some before shots so I can share the before and afters. We are still enjoying some nice weather here but things are changing up again soon. I almost have all my Easter dishes done. I got sidetracked with the good weather and ended up mowing the lawn today instead of doing dishes. No worries…the dishes will still be there tomorrow. Still basking in the joy that celebrating Easter brings. Hope you are, too. Blessings…

Dear and I were out the door early Easter morning and attended the 7:00 a.m. service. It was a great way to start this glorious Easter day. The Easter cross was on center stage!

After church I set the places for our Easter meal.

We had Shashlik (marinated lamb barbecued on skewers), glazed ham, roasted vegetables and salad. I sent ham home with our guests, too.

Our centerpiece was our Russian Easter Bread. Some people call it Paska. We call it Kulich.

The signs written in Russian say, Christ is Risen, Truly He is Risen or He is Risen Indeed.

This is Searnaya Paska which is served with our Easter Bread. Searnaya Paska is a sweetened cheese spread that is made with a type of dry cheese, egg yolks, butter, cream, and sugar. Don’t even bother trying to figure out the calories or how it will raise your cholesterol levels. The mixture is pressed overnight in a mold to get the excess liquid out. Besides the sweet cheese we serve this with strawberries. A most wonderful combination. Think strawberry shortcake.

To document the fact that we got amazing sunshine on Easter 2012 I had Lana and Laura pose with some Easter symbols outside.

Look at them! They are squinting. That made us happy today!

We all spent some time out in the Easter sunshine soaking up some vitamin D.

We are full and satisfied with all the glory of the day we enjoyed. Hope you had a wonderful Easter Day!
Christos Voskress! Voistina Voskress!
Христос Воскрес!
Воистину воскрес!
Christ is Risen!
Truly He is Risen!

At the feet of Jesus,
Listening to His word;
Learning wisdom’s lesson
From her loving Lord;
Mary, led by heav’nly grace,
Chose the meek disciple’s place.
At the feet of Jesus
Is the place for me,
There a humble learner
Would I choose to be.
At the feet of Jesus,
Pouring perfume rare,
Mary did her Savior
For the grave prepare;
And, from love the good work
done,
She her Lord’s approval won.
At the feet of Jesus
Is the place for me,
There, in sweetest service
Would I ever be.
At the feet of Jesus,
In that morning hour,
Loving hearts, receiving
Resurrection power,
Haste with joy to preach the word;
Christ is risen, praise the Lord!
At the feet of Jesus,
Risen now for me,
I shall sing His praises
Through eternity.

…for my favorite day of the year! Celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus tops my list.

The house is getting ready with a little bit of Easter decor.

The yard is coming back to life after being dead all winter.

Churches all over the world are getting ready for Easter services.

Pansies that are yellow and purple are such a sign of Easter to me and they are ready for Easter.

Looking way back at Easter’s past in Southern California. Part of getting ready for Easter were new outfits every year.

One of our favorite little bunnies doing her favorite thing way back in 1987 or 1988…
This year 2 of our 3 kids will be celebrating in different parts of the country. Katie colored eggs in her own home this year.

Lana, Laura and I finished our Paska/Kulich on Good Friday to enjoy on Easter.

Easter tables from previous years. I’ll be getting our Easter table 2012 ready tomorrow for our celebration on Sunday.

My sweet cheese spread (Seernaya Paska) is in it’s cheese mold getting ready to spread on our Kulich/Paska on Easter.
Are you ready?
…”So people get ready, there’s a train a comin’
You don’t need no baggage, you just get on board
All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin’
Don’t need no ticket, you just thank the Lord”
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ~ John 14:6
