Tuesdays With Moisi ~ Melissa’s Tribute

This is a photo and tribute our niece Melissa wrote about her Dzeda, our Pop, Moisi, on May 7, 2014.

“My Deda….he loves his Bible. Tonight he told me that he doesn’t rush when he reads. ‘I meditate on it,’ he says. His goal from now on is to start memorizing more of it. He’ll be 91 at the end of the month and questioning his purpose on this earth without Baba is a daily struggle. Yet despite his broken heart, he has never lost sight of what is truly important. He presses on, striving to live for Christ every single day. The man never ceases to amaze me. He is a true inspiration.”

This photo was taken of our Pop in his bedroom when he was still living in the senior apartment in Brea, California. He would soon move in with our oldest sister and her family, Melissa’s mom.

My prayer for you is that if you are meditating that you would only meditate on the Word of God, something from the Bible.

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14

“For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.” Psalm 18:28

“My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. Keep your heart with vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:20-23

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me -practice these things and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4: 8-9

Hugs Allowed!

Our little Eastside family went to Phase Three for gathering and hugging on May 2nd, 2020. We had Dan, Jamie, Addy and Jaymison over for dinner on that Saturday. First things first…we got a good hug from Addy after she was out of her car seat and up the two steps to Gramps and Baba’s house.

Jaymison came in with his mommy and I wondered if he’d be willing to come to me after the many times we had seen him without responding to his little arms lifted up for me to pick him up. I was overjoyed (to tears) when he came right to me and then laid his sweet head against my shoulder and stayed there until it was time to sit down for dinner.

We had a nice dinner and then it was time to get re-acquainted with fun in the playroom. Jaymison is getting the “lay of the land” at our country bungalow.

Addy is a pro about all things here already.

Such a relief and joy to be together.

Thinking about this separation time and distancing time we are all having this morning and wondering about how special, amazing, glorious it will be when we finally see Jesus face to face? To behold His glory in person. Will we hug? Will we hold back and be in awe or will we run up and give Him a bear hug. Maybe both? The longer I live the more I’m looking forward to His appearing.

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” Titus 2:11-14 (ESV)

A Fly By…

Some of our Canadian friends can still cross the border without any issues. Here’s hoping our border to the North can open again soon.

Colossians 3:1-4 ~ “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

Mother’s Day has been lovely already and we have one more small gathering to enjoy. Our children all have honored me more than I deserve and it was good to see two thirds of them in person. Our two sons made breakfast for us. Tonight we’ll have dinner together with Jamie’s family. Our gathering will be under 10 people.

Hope you who are mothers had some lovely greetings today.

The Book My Mother Read ~ Hymn

The Book My Mother Read

Like a compass on the sea,
Like a star on azure deep,
Is the Bible unto me,
For my course it safely keeps;
Tells me how I strayed and fell,
How in sin I lay as dead,
But I live its power to tell,
Blessèd book my mother read.

Refrain

Precious book! O wondrous book!
Who can tell its power divine?
Bearing news of grace so free,
Book of books, I claim it mine.

Like a lamp in darkest night,
Shining on my pathway lone,
Now and then upon my sight,
Shows a vision of my home;
So this book my spirit cheers,
When all other hopes are fled,
Balm and comfort for my fears,
Is the book my mother read.

Refrain

Like a guest from realms above,
Soothing all one’s pain and pang,
How it thrills with Jesus’ love,
Like some song the angels sang;
Tells me how my Savior came,
How for me His blood was shed;
I will read it o’er again—
Blessèd book my mother read.

Refrain

Words: Edward S. Ufford, 1916.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers who come by here today! God bless you and keep you!

Looking Back in May…

A look back to days of easy traveling in May and some Gardens visited from my photo archives.

The Japanese Gardens in Seattle Washington in May of 2010.

In May of 2014 Katie and I toured the gardens at The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina.

May 2016, Mother’s Day in our yard in Kenmore, Washington. Our huge Rhododendron Bushes. With our “Coast Kids”.

May of 2018 Tulip fields in Chilliwack, B.C., Canada.

May of 2019 archives but we actually visited this garden the end of April.  Manito Gardens in Spokane, Washington.

The primary reason I’m looking to my archives is that my photo uploads aren’t working yet again. I’m beginning to sound like a broken record.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Isaiah 40:8

I’ll leave you with good words that I’ve pondered recently:

I’ve been concentrating on Psalm 119 and Psalm 19 in my Old Testament Readings. In the New Testament I’m in Colossians. Here is a selection of verses from Psalm 119:

119:4 ~ You have commanded your precepts
    to be kept diligently.

119:11  ~ I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.

119:15  ~ I will meditate on your precepts
and fix my eyes on your ways.

119:18 ~ Open my eyes, that I may behold
wondrous things out of your law.

119:27 ~ Make me understand the way of your precepts,
and I will meditate on your wondrous works.

119:34 ~ Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
and observe it with my whole heart.

I’m adding a link to an article I read on Tim Challies blog that I want to be able to reference called; Is Your Church Christian or Christianish?

Mother’s day like other special days that have fallen within our social distancing time have and will be different. Plans are afoot for our family here for an outdoor gathering together on Mother’s Day since we have a nice day in the forecast.

A Walk About…

…our property to see what is blooming on Monday May 4th, 2020. In the midst of Stay at Home COVID-19.

In our front planter these pretties popped up.

Is it a variety of a daffodil?

The Hostas are breaking through.

The White Bleeding Heart.

Fern fronds.

Sweet Pansies.

Our crooked bush that the deer like.

A lonely daffodil with one of the rocks Addy painted.

The Red Peony. We have a few of this red variety.

The White Peony.

Goodnight Colville.

Our Star of Hope that shines every night.

We had a full day of rain on Wednesday. We were busy indoors and then had a babysitting date with our grands so our kids could have a couple hours on their own. Those grands are such a joy in our lives. I’m happy to be back to hugging. No kissing but the hugs are amazing.

The pain was real without those hugs. This photo was taken after his self-will was tested and his nap time was late and he was teething. A trifecta of pain. We love this boy!

Psalm 119: 9-16 (ESV)

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
11 I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Lord;
    teach me your statutes!
13 With my lips I declare
all the rules[a] of your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I delight
as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts
and fix my eyes on your ways.
16 I will delight in your statutes;
I will not forget your word.

Seis de Mayo Hodgepodge

1.  Question day this week lands on Cinco de Mayo. Are/were tacos on your Tuesday night menu? Hard shell, soft shell or just gimme all the tacos? Are you even a fan of Mexican food? Do you like your salsa mild, spicy, or somewhere in between? Margaritas-Frozen, on the rocks, or no thank you? Have you ever been to Mexico?.

No tacos on Taco Tuesday/Cinco de Mayo this year! I enjoy Street tacos (soft shell) but I would eat any taco. Mexican Food is my comfort food, so yes, I am a fan. Spicy salsa or in between not mild. Cadillac Margarita on the rocks please, no salt.

Yes we have been to Mexico before we had children and while we were living in Southern California. We drove to some little village just outside of Tecate, Mexico to pick up tile for the house my cousin was having built. After we got the tile safely back to the U.S. side of the border in a panel van that belonged to Dear’s father we went back into Tijuana (I forget how we got into Tijuana without the van, maybe a taxi) to do some shopping and then we decided we could walk back to the border but the police pulled up and thought we were nuts so we got escorted back to the Border by the local police who befriended us instead of arresting us when they found out my cousin was a Huntington Beach Policeman. It was hilarious to see my cousin sitting between the two policemen in the front seat and Dear, myself and Jeanie were in the back seat of the cruiser.

2. What’s something you may do this month?

Since we are still on stay at home orders I may just finish Jaymison’s First year scrapebook.

3. Tell us what’s happening in your state or town as far as restaurants/salons/parks/beaches/businesses opening up.

Our beaches and parks and golf courses are opened up but other businesses are still on hold until our county can convince the governor that we are an area of our state that has only had one death and our medical facilities have not been stretched so maybe he will okay more services to open up.

How do you feel about it?

I feel that we could be at the stage 2 reopening at this time instead of stage 1.

Are you out and about or hunkered down? Do you wear a mask?

We go to the grocery store about once a week. We do wear masks. Another thing I’m doing is taking the very minimum with me when I go out. A license, credit card, keys and my phone. No purse. I’m using my pockets for my stuff. When I get home I take off the clothes I wore, wash my hands thoroughly, and put on fresh clothing.

4. Mother nature, everybody and their mother, mom jeans, like mother like daughter, soccer mom, mother hen, mother lode, necessity is the mother of invention, stay-at-home mom…pick one and tell us how it applies to your life right now.

Having to come up with meals everyday has made me more of the mother of invention. Although Mother nature is calling me outside a lot to weed and mow.

5. April showers bring May flowers…what’s blooming in your yard or garden today?

A lot of plants are ready to burst forth but these are showing their color first.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We’re still lighting our star of hope each evening. This star is for our earthly hopes. Our eternal hope is set!

We hope that we can gather together again with our church family and have Communion together again.

We are in a stage that we are seeing and hugging our grandchildren again and that brings us such joy that is hard to explain. Post coming soon.

We hope we can travel to see our “Coast” kids again, soon.

We really miss not being able to go out for Cinco de Mayo or other times when we want to enjoy Mexican food. The two photos above of Katie and Andrew were taken at two different Mexican Restaurants that we have been regulars at. La Corona in Kirkland, Washington close to our Kenmore home was our weekly Tuesday date for early dinner. Our favorite waitress, Liliana, would see us drive up and have our Cadillac Margaritas ready for us. Now that we live in Colville our Mexican restaurant of choice is El Ranchito in Chewelah. We enjoy the friendship we are developing with Hector and Sergio. The photo of Andrew in the birthday hat was taken at El Ranchito. We hope for a time when we can comfortably go out to eat again.

Thank you to Joyce for coming up with the questions for Wednesday Hodgepodge.

Missing Pieces

It’s an interesting phenomena but when the weather is blustery our internet goes into hiding somewhere.

Since I can’t upload the photos I wanted for a post today I’ll go back and post these photos that I uploaded on kinder internet days that I haven’t shared yet. Easter Decor was at a minimum during this Pandemic. Easter was celebrated well but not with decor.

Христос воскрес! Khristos voskrese! Christ is Risen!

воистину воскрес! Voistinu Voskrese! Truly He is Risen!

Our Easter message will always be that Christ is Risen, He is Risen Indeed in English and Russian!

The cutest little Easter Bunny. The photos our daughter in law shares on Facebook upload with no trouble.

Addy painting our presents for Easter, rocks for our gardens.

Jaymison coming back from the family evening walk down the driveway and back again. I can’t get over how big he looks here!

Still trying to upload my camera photos to no avail. Today I took photos of all that is starting to bloom at our Country Bungalow but the uploads failed. I will keep trying.

Monday we worked outside for most of the day. Dear worked on the shop and I pulled weeds and mowed the front acre. Tuesday I’ll mow the back acres while Dear continues working on the shop. The forecast is for a 70 degree day. Time will tell. How are things in your corner?

Cinco de Mayo lands on this Tuesday and our favorite Mexican Restaurant isn’t open for service inside yet. What an COVID-19 mishap! We won’t be having tacos today or Mexican food for that matter. Once El Ranchito is open again we will celebrate!

Quote of the week from Sunday’s sermon: “Sincerity is not the test of obedience.”

Pandemic Journal ~ My Memories Part 1

My friend Judy at My Front Porch wrote a post about her story during this Pandemic to document this time in history and it inspired me to do the same.

The first note in my journal is a prayer request on Wednesday March 11th during our weekly Prayer meeting at church. Item #9 ~ Corona virus. It wasn’t at the top of the list…yet.

On February 27th I flew to Southern California for our sister’s Leap Year birthday and there was no one on the flights with masks on. I had my disinfecting wipes with me because even prior to the COVID-19 scare I always wipe off the fold down tray and arm rests. The gal next to me asked to use one of my wipes and I gladly obliged.

While in Southern California there still were no restrictions in place so we enjoyed eating out and my sister’s birthday party with about 30 or so guests. The first out of the ordinary thing we saw were hoards of people at Costco over stocking. On my flight home on March 3rd the conversation stemmed around people not being able to find toilet paper. More people around me asked to use a wipe.

Now we are back to the week of March 8th. We went to church without suspecting it would be our last time in the congregation for many weeks. On Thursday March 12th we heard that President Trump halted all travel to and from Europe excluding the UK as of Friday the 13th of March. We were heading to Spokane Valley on this day to use reservations at the Hampton Inn that friends could not cancel. Little did we know when we said we’d use the 2 rooms that were paid for already that we would be there with just a handful of other people.

Our kids were out of toilet paper and we got to the Costco on Sprague in Spokane a little before they opened. We noticed right away that the parking lot was full already and it was 30 minutes before opening. Yikes. There was a line up and we got in line with less than 6 feet between us. When the doors opened everyone made a beeline to the paper goods section. Costco figured out some ways to alleviate bottle necks in the paper section and they stacked the TP in the frozen aisle with an attendant that handed each member their package. Our kids wanted baby wipes, which was another premium item and we were able to put two boxes in our cart. Two boxes of diapers added to the cart and we were home free. We made it into a line and out the door before the lines were reported to be to the middle of the store. Yikes.

Costco was so strapped that they couldn’t cash our Executive earnings check so they had to write us a check that we could cash at our bank. On the way to the hotel we stopped at a branch of our bank and cashed the check. The folks at the hotel were very welcoming and we were able to check in early. I had brought my own jug of Clorox disinfecting wipes and I set about to disinfect both of our adjoining rooms to our satisfaction.

After lunch at a Mexican Restaurant close to the hotel, we spent the rest of the afternoon doing some shopping at the Cabella’s in Idaho (Spokane Valley is just a few miles from the Washington/Idaho border) and then TJMaxx, Nordstrom Rack, Barnes and Noble and last a stop at Krispy Kreme for a little snack to take back to the hotel.

On Friday the thirteenth we started hearing about more closures due to the Virus threat. The hoarding of disinfectant, hand sanitizer, TP and other paper products was at a fever pitch. We shopped at Fred Meyer, Hobby Lobby, Total Wine, and Party City. We were still hoping Addy’s Daniel the Tiger 3rd birthday party would happen.

For my early birthday meal out we chose The Clover in Spokane near Gonzaga University. What a gem of a restaurant it is and we hope to return when things get back to semi-normal.

The Dungeness Crab and Artichoke Dip was so delicious! Because it was my birthday they added this dessert for free. Yum! The biscotti was made in their own bakery.

While at the restaurant we heard that all schools in Washington State would be closed through April.

Saturday the fourteenth of March (my 69th birthday) our kids made the journey from Colville to Spokane Valley to join us at the hotel. We got had some lunch and then got them settled into their room.

We had the hotel pool all to ourselves and it was a fun time with Jaymison and Addy. We all got cleaned up and headed to a couple shops (still no restrictions) and then out to dinner for my birthday. This was a snow blowing freezing day.

On this day we heard about the Disneyland closure, all hotels around Disneyland closed. All public gatherings over 250 people prohibited. No flights to and from Europe.

Sunday was a leisurely morning before we checked out to go home. We stopped at Costco on our way home for gasoline and to pick up a few more things. (Gluttons for Punishment) We stopped at Super 1 once we were in Colville to get what we’d need for our Corned Beef and Cabbage meal on Tuesday the 17th of March, St. Patrick’s day. Hints of what was to come…no carrots or potatoes.

Now we were hearing no meetings over 50 people, no sports, no restaurants except take out, and then no meetings over 10 people.

Everyone was scrambling to put plans in place on how to proceed with church services. Non-essential services were shut down. Interesting what the powers that be deem essential. Non essential included hair salons, many retail shops, golf courses, bowling alleys, gyms, elective surgeries, dental services except for emergencies, optometrist, etc. My eye surgery 6 month follow-up was cancelled.

The kids came over for St. Patrick’s Day meal and we talked about Addy’s birthday having to be cancelled. Our kids from the Coast would not be coming over for the weekend. This is the point where the Pandemic really hit home.

The Pandemic Part 2 coming in the future.

The Law of God is Good and Wise ~ Hymn

The Law of God is Good and Wise

The law of God is good and wise,
And sets His will before our eyes,
Shows us the way of righteousness,
And dooms to death when we transgress.

Its light of holiness imparts
The knowledge of our sinful hearts,
That we may see our lost estate
And seek deliverance ere too late.

To those who help in Christ have found
And would in works of love abound
It shows what deeds are His delight
And should be done as good and right.

When men the offered help disdain
And willfully in sin remain,
Its terror in their ear resounds
And keeps their wickedness in bounds.

The law is good, but since the fall
Its holiness condemns us all;
It dooms us for our sin to die
And has no power to justify.

To Jesus we for refuge flee,
Who from the curse has set us free,
And humbly worship at His throne,
Saved by His grace through faith alone.
