Casa de la Playa

Katie and I are in Southern California enjoying family get-togethers. One of our favorite places to gather is at my sister Vera’s house in Huntington Beach. She and my BIL Nick are always willing and able to host and cook wonderful meals for our large family gatherings. We call their place “Casa de la Playa” because they live in Huntington Beach within walking distance to the Pacific Ocean.

We were there on Saturday for brunch, the beach, and then for dinner!

Besides Katie and I flying in, Miss Hope flew in with her parents from Texas. She loves Uncle Nick and she loves the beach! Vera made a delicious Chile Relleno casserole. Miss Hope was checking Katie and me out. After brunch and a nap we headed down the street to the beach.

Miss Hope loves the beach.

Hi Mommy! Look at me!

Daddy took the first shift with Hope in the water until her teeth started chattering and they came in to get warmed up.

Katie decided to brave the cold water.

Hope’s cousins took the next shift helping Miss Hope hop over the waves and avoid being toppled by them.

Time to pack everything up and head back to Casa de la Playa to shower before dinner.

Tim, Letty, Len and Kathy joined the rest of us for dinner. Nick barbecued ribs, tri-tip, chicken, mushrooms and zucchini and Vera made mashed potatoes, wild rice and salad. We were introduced to Pinkberry’s frozen yogurt for dessert. The salted caramel and the watermelon frozen yogurt was delicious! Thanks Nick and Vera for treating us so well and thank you Mandy for the frozen yogurt.

Thanks to my cousin Jim in Clovis we are calling our week of festivities the Bag-o-rama Jamboree!  More fun to come.

I have not watched T.V. since we flew into L.A. but I’ve seen some stories on line about the horrible massacre in Norway. My heart and prayers go out to people of  Norway and all the families there who have lost loved ones in such a senseless act of violence.

Summertime…

Happy Summer to You!

We have sunshine, woohoo!

This is from the 50’s at Big Bear in the San Bernardino Mountains,  Southern California. The three families represented here are all Russian immigrants who arrived in the U.S.A. in the late 40’s.  I’m the one with the buster brown haircut sitting on the table. At this point I was the youngest in our family. Our next 4 siblings were born in 1958, 1959 and twins in 1963.

To celebrate the first day of summer I’ll be out in the yard mowing and pulling weeds…not camping.

What are you doing?

FFF ~ Reminiscing…

…to think, talk, or write about remembered events or experiences.

These are all images from my early days in Montebello, California. One of my high school friends posted them on Facebook. It was so much fun to see them and remember the times I spent at each of these spots so many years ago. Some of these buildings do not exist anymore.

1. 31 Flavors on Beverly Blvd. in Montebello ~ My family would stop here growing up. It was always a very exciting time for us kids. We didn’t eat out as a family and to stop and get a treat like this was special. We would get one or two scoops. When we got to have 2 scoops I’d always choose orange sherbet and chocolate chip.

2. Curries Ice Cream Parlor was across the street from my junior high school. At lunch you could get a hot dog, chips, and cherry coke for about 35 cents. I think I only had money for lunch maybe once or twice during my time in junior high. I always had a sack lunch made by my mother. The cherry coke was the kind where they pumped in the cherry flavoring into the coke.

3. The Garmar Theater was the only theater in town. I went a few times with my friends in junior high and high school.

4. Gardunos was a fast food stand a block from my high school. We had an open campus for junior high and high school so we could walk the 1/2 block to Whittier Blvd. and enjoy the food here.

5. In the background of this 2nd photo of Curries Ice Cream you can see the wonderful brick building that was my junior high. It is long gone and has a modern building that looks more like a prison on the property now. I really loved the great old brick building but it didn’t withstand earthquakes well and had to be replaced for the safety of the children going there.

Thank you to Susanne at Living to tell the Story for hosting Friday’s Fave Five. A time to join together and remember our favorites from the past week. Click on the image to join in.

My posts will be getting a bit spotty for the rest of the year. I’ll be concentrating on some holiday baking next week and getting things ready for house guests. Our middle son will hopefully get time off to come from Eastern Washington to spend Christmas here. Our daughter Katie’s fiance Andrew will get leave to come for Christmas. He arrives on Christmas Eve. Katie is very happy about that. Are you staying home or traveling for Christmas? Enjoy!

Happy Veterans Day & Armistice Day!

They Did Their Share

On Veteran’s Day we honor
Soldiers who protect our nation.
For their service as our warriors,
They deserve our admiration.

Some of them were drafted;
Some were volunteers;
For some it was just yesterday;
For some it’s been many years;

In the jungle or the desert,
On land or on the sea,
They did whatever was assigned
To produce a victory.

Some came back; some didn’t.
They defended us everywhere.
Some saw combat; some rode a desk;
All of them did their share.

No matter what the duty,
For low pay and little glory,
These soldiers gave up normal lives,
For duties mundane and gory.

Let every veteran be honored;
Don’t let politics get in the way.
Without them, freedom would have died;
What they did, we can’t repay.

We owe so much to them,
Who kept us safe from terror,
So when we see a uniform,
Let’s say “thank you” to every wearer.

When Pigs Fly!

This is my contribution for Yard Art on Thursdays hosted by Mary at Work of the Poet. This is from my archives and was taken in California on Topanga Canyon Road.

I’ll probably be missing from action till Monday! Have a great rest of the week and weekend!

Forgetting What Lies behind…

…and reaching forward to what lies ahead

When I was in Canada at the beginning of September I stayed with Bev (she took this photo). We enjoyed zipping around in her cute VW convertible on one of the days I was there. It was fun and it reminded me of days gone by.

This was my car way back in 1971. It wasn’t a convertible but I enjoyed it and zipped around in it, too.

The picture quality is bad…an old faded Instamatic shot but some of the memories haven’t faded. I’m not a person who lives in the past or who wishes she was younger again. I’m happy that God keeps giving me new things to enjoy and think about. Sometimes he jars me into the present. It’s fun to remember but it’s good not to get stuck in memories. It’s good not to miss the new thing God is doing…

Philippians 3: 12-14

Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 43: 18-19

“Remember not the former things,
nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.”

Wondering what new things God will be showing me in the days to come. Hope you are enjoying your new day!

Felton Covered Bridge

When we traveled to Mt. Hermon, California for Ben and Kristin’s wedding we were surprised to see this great old covered bridge in Felton.We were early for the wedding so we took some time to walk across it.

Built in 1892-93 and believed to be the tallest covered bridge in the country, it stood as the only entry to Felton for 45 years. In 1937 it was retired from active service to become a pedestrian bridge and figured prominently in many films of that period. After suffering damage in the winter storms of 1982, it was restored to its original elegance in 1987 using native materials and local talent.

Plaque is located at bridge entrance on west bank of San Lorenzo River in Covered Bridge Park.

It was a desire of mine to see a covered bridge and I was happy to be surprised by this one. I’d still be interested in seeing some more on the East Coast.

I’m going to add this link to Outdoor Wednesday hosted by Susan at A Southern DayDreamer.

An Enchanting Wedding…

…among the Redwoods.

We were expecting to see Legolas, Haldir, Elrond, Arwen, or Galadriel come out from behind a Redwood and join us in celebrating the wedding of Ben and Kristin. Maybe even an Ewok…

The wedding was held at the Bride’s grandparents cabin that they’ve owned for years. Both families spent a lot of weekends preparing the grounds for a wedding.

Ben, the groom, laid the stone for the walkway.

The cross was forged at a family foundry.

The trees were created by God!

The dance floor was built on site.

You can see the setting of the dance floor behind Dear and me!

Here comes the groom…I mean

Here comes the bride!

So lovely.

The groom fighting back the tears!

Married at last.

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Bogdanof!

Kathy B. reminded me that the bride thought to use these tree log rounds as trivets for the cake stands.

It was a creative effort by both families and the bride and groom to create this magical night for their wedding.

I’m glad you made it all the way through this long post. I’m headed to Canada for a few days and won’t be at the computer. I’ll catch up again late Friday or on the weekend. Blessings!
