Vintage Thingies Thursday

This week my Vintage Thingies Post is something I was so intrigued with when I was younger. This comes from my MIL Verna’s stuff again. She had a hard time getting rid of anything so we are enjoying a lot of her things now.

Does it look familiar?

Now you probably recognize what it is.

Yep! One of those fun collapsible cups. Maybe if we kept these around our landfills wouldn’t be filled with plastic water bottles. Yeah right!

For more Vintage goodies head over to the Apron Queen.

WFW ~ Micah 7:18,19

Micah 7: 18, 19 ~

Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.

Southern Methodist Episcopal Church ~ Ventura

This Historical Landmark Carpenter Gothic church was built as Southern Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. It was a wedding chapel for some time and was converted into a B&B and now it’s for sale.

On one of our Saturday walks in Downtown Ventura, California we decided it deserved a look see. The church is on Main Street.

These handles look like coffin handles to us…

So if anyone has $1,750,000 and wants to run a B&B this could be the place for you!

ABC Wednesday ~ Jameson

J is for Jameson Whiskey

“If By Whiskey” Noah S. Sweat, Mississippi, 1948

Although Prohibition had been repealed, it was still a big political issue in Mississippi in 1948, when Noah Sweat was campaigning for the office of state representative in Alcorn County. So Sweat gave a speech intended to appeal to both sides of the issue. He won the election, and went on to serve as prosecutor and eventually Judge of the First Judicial District.

My friends, I had not intended to discuss this controversial subject at this particular time. However, I want you to know that I do not shun controversy. On the contrary. I will take a stand on any issue at any time, regardless of how fraught with controversy it might be. You have asked me how I feel about whiskey. All right, here is how I feel about whiskey.

If when you say whiskey you mean the devil’s brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster, that defiles innocence, dethrones reason, destroys the home, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the bread from the mouths of little children; if you mean the evil drink that topples the Christian man and woman from the pinnacle of righteous, gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, and despair, and shame and helplessness, and hopelessness, then certainly I am against it.

But;

If when you say whiskey you mean the oil of conversation, the philosophic wine, the ale that is consumed when good fellows get together, that puts a song in their hearts and laughter on their lips, and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes; if you mean Christmas cheer; if you mean the stimulating drink that puts the spring in the old gentleman’s step on a frosty, crispy morning; if you mean the drink which enables a man to magnify his joy, and his happiness, and to forget, if only for a little while, life’s great tragedies, and heartaches, and sorrows; if you mean that drink, the sale of which pours into our treasuries untold millions of dollars, which are used to provide tender care for our little crippled children, our blind, our deaf, and dumb, our pitiful aged and infirm; to build highways and hospitals and schools, then certainly I am for it.

This is my stand. I will not retreat from it. I will not compromise.

-Noah S. Sweat, 1948

Happy Fall Everyone!

Before September slips away…

“The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze.

Ruby Tuesday ~ Just a Splash of Red

For Ruby Tuesday this week we were challenged to find a splash of red as opposed to something totally red. So here are my photos for this week. Three are taken on walks and one is from a party I attended. You’ll have to squint to see the red in some of these just think… “Where’s Waldo?”

Happy Ruby Tuesday everyone. For more touches of Red visit Maryt at Work of the Poet.

Beatrix Potter -A Life of Nature ~ by Linda Lear

Father Brown Crime Stories ~ by G.K. Chesterton

Transforming Grace ~ by Jerry Bridges

The Heart of the Family ~ by Elizabeth Goudge

Green Dolphin Street ~ by Elizabeth Goudge

I might even re-read The Wind in the Willows

Happy Tea and Reading Weather to one and all. Enjoy…

Michelle’s Birthday Party

My niece Michelle turned 30 this year and a celebration was in order so family and friends headed to Orange, California to Debbee’s townhome for a party. There was lots of great food including everyone’s favorite Piroshky. We had meat filled piroshky, potato filled piroshky and a cabbage filled pirog.

Here are some of the usual suspects.

The Parentals/Grandparents ~ Nadia and Moisi

Some of Michelle’s aunts and her mommy

Michelle and her auntie ellen b.

Michelle and her son Jackson

Nana and Jackson

Jackson making a serious point!

This photo turned out so tiny in the collage I wanted to add it here since it’s the only shot of Ryan I managed to get and I wanted M. Lou to see her son. So here’s Michelle and Ryan (Jackson’s Dad)  with cousins David and Kristin. I also realized that this is the only photo I took that has Michelle’s sister Melissa in it. There she is way back there behind Michelle.
