It’s time for Foodie Friday and I’m re-posting this very popular Rice Krispie Bar recipe. Gollum at Designs by Gollum is the hostess for this weekly event. I made these for my kids for our Memorial Day Celebration in Washington State!
To make these wonderful bars you will need 1 cup sugar, 1 cup Karo Light Corn Syrup, 1 cup Creamy Peanut Butter, 6 cups Rice Krispies, 1 cup Butterscotch Chips and 1 cup of Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips.
Bring 1 cup sugar and 1 cup Karo light syrup just to a boil mixing well. Take off heat and add 1 cup peanut butter and mix till smooth.
Add 6 cups Rice Krispies and mix till all the krispies are coated well.
Put this mixture into a well greased 9×12 pan and press down evenly into the pan. Empty chips into microwaveable bowl and microwave at 3-30second intervals, mixing well after each 30 seconds. Mix together till smooth. (You can use the double boiler method to melt your chips if you prefer). Pour entire mixture on top of the pressed down Rice Krispies and spread to cover. Let them cool and then enjoy!
All righty then…I’m going to do some shameless name-dropping so if you can’t stand that sort of thing stop reading right now. The very first time I enjoyed these bars was at a Young Marrieds Sunday School event in the late Seventies. The gal that made these bars and brought them to share is George Lucas’ sister. Yes, the George Lucas of Star Wars fame. She and her husband were in our Sunday School Class at Huntington Beach E.V. Free Church. Fun times.
Photobucket is holding all my photos that I stored on their site from 2007-2015 hostage replacing them with ugly grey and black boxes and asking for a large ransom to retrieve them. It is a slow process to go through all my posts deleting the ugly boxes.
That’s a new twist on an old favorite for me–It looks delicious, but what I really am loving is that tablecloth–blue and yellow, my favorites!
This is my signature take to picnic dish…it is always a hit!
I’m hooked. What a fun twist on an old favorite.
OH GLORY…and with Dark Chocolate chips…oh my. I found a recipe that added mini oreo cookies…they were okay, but this looks even better
They look good and real sweet 🙂
You can’t beat rice krispy treats with peanut butter added!
I love the rice krispy treats and I dearly love chocolate. This could be heaven…
What a great looking table on that great looking dessert! I bet everyone loved it!
oh Ellen…these sound so good… but I am trying to watch what I eat right now…so I will copy your recipe… and wait to make it when I know I will have a full house of people to help me eat it! Happy Foodie Friday! Have a great weekend ~ Susan
oh no another diet breaker!

I have kids ranging from College to Kindergarten. And I think each and everyone of them would love me to send this to their dorm or class. Wouldn’t I be the great mommy of the day?? Thanks for sharing!
aren’t these the same treats that broke my spatula cuz I didn’t realize how fast they set??
oooo
gonna have to make those again…soooo yummy!!
OMG – this looks so fantastic & I wish I could have one or more right now! Thanks for the awesome recipe! ☺ Diane
It’s hard to improve upon rice krispie treats, but covering them with chocolate certainly does the trick!
Ah the chocolate surprise on top makes them even better:)
Like the tablecloth too:)
Joyce
Mmm mm – I’ll have that for dessert after the pasta dish. 🙂
Wow what a great and simple twist on the usual Rice Krispie bar. Love it! Chocolate improves everything, doesn’t it?
Cass
Great Choice! I love these bars! We call them Scotcheroos. Thanks for reminding me about them. Now I need to check my pantry for the ingredients. ~ Robyn
Quite a new twist to rice krispie treats! Look ing good!
I JUST STARTED COOKING- CAN I COOL IN FRIG WHEN IT’S A JULY 4TH HOLIDAY AND HOT?
Yes!
Im 11 years old and I can make it and I love it!
Well done Emily! Aren’t they yummy!?
When I found out that my Grandson-in-law to be loved this treat, I had to make them (for him) to take to a family outing…what a sweet way to make points with our new family member. Thanks for a really yummy recipie! I fel guilty that they are so easy to make !!
My Mom always made them this way when I was growing up (in the 70’s)! I never had them the traditional way until I ate at a friends house. I like chocolate and peanut butter way better than marshmallow any day!
I’m going to a vineyard tomorrow night to hear Shades of Blue (a birg band) and dance. I was charged with dessert. I will give this a try – chocolate and PB are a favorite combination.
i will post the outcome!
I just made these tonight and they are yummy but a little too sweet for my taste. Should I omit the sugar and just use corn syrup next time or use 1/2 c sugar & 1/2 c syrup?
I think it might be safer to reduce the sugar only :0)
Hallelujah, we have a winner! Pardon me while I wipe my face.
I would also like to add MMMMMMMMMM! MMMMMMMMM! Yummy.
Need I Say More?

Enjoyed this recipe at a church social. Intend to make them for friends in Florida this winter. Even the older folks enjoy peanut butter and chocolate with rice krispies.
This recipe looks good! I am so tired of having to buy them at a bakery or gas station when I am in the mood for one! I think I will reduce the sugar a bit, but cant wait to try them. I will leave a message on what I think about them…although I am sure that I will have to wipe my fingers clean first!
Cannot wait to make these with my Daughters in a little bit =)
looks good
wow i just made it and it is very tasty! too bad its soo unhealthy haha how many calories do you think are in here???? :O
These look great! Can anyone tell me what the difference between using butter and corn syrup in the recipe is? I’ve only used butter, not corn syrup, before and am just wondering if there’s a big difference or a reason to switch. Also – does anyone think these bars are too sweet? These sound amazing to me, but I’m looking to bring a “neutral” dessert to work that everyone can enjoy!
Thanks all!
This recipe has been in my family for years and it is always a crowd pleaser.
Aren’t these like the candy bar that is called whatchmacallits!
I used to think they tasted like a babyruth, but a watchamacallit is probably close, too :0)
Yummy recipe, I am so happy I finally found this on a search. My 5 year old and I are going to make Christmas goodies tomorrow. This recipe will sure make him happy, not to mention the information about George Lucas……hubby and son are very huge fans here. 😉
Some elf brought these to the office this week as a Christmas week treat. I’m not going home until they are gone! I’m hooked and will borrow this recipe for our annual pie, cake and cookie bake off next month.
Khub Moza……………….
We have always called these the Lutheran Ladies Fellowship Bars because there’s always a dish of these at any of our picnics. Now I don’t have to wait for this summer, just until they cool. Thanks!
Ellen,
This is Julie’s Husband. Mike Thompson. I went to Huntington Beach EV Free in late 70’s as well. Weird. My wife was looking for this recipe and saw your post about Wendy Lucas (Myers at the time) whom we still stay in touch with. (Dan was my Sunday School teacher during Junior High. My Parents are Ray and Ladeine.
Hi Mike! It’s a small world after all especially in cyber space! Ray and Ladeine sound very familiar. I’d love to sit a spell with Wendy sometime…
OK—you say 1 cup each of the butterscotch and chocolate chips then you say “empty both packages of both chips”. The size of a bag of chips is usually more than 1 cup isn’t it? So will I get too much topping if I use an entire package? Or do I just use 1 cup of each type of chip? Just wondering?
I cup of each is plenty Pat, sorry for the confusion…
My Grandma used to make these so I’m SO glad to have found this recipe after so many years. GREAT memories!! Thanks for posting!!! Going into the kitchen right now to start making!!! YUM!!!
This recipe was delicious! My daughter has a gluten free problem so we made it with GF rice krispies and she enjoys it!! Thank you so much!!
My mother has been making these since I was a little girl. She made them for our birthdays! She passed away this April, and I have been looking for her recipe so that I can carry on the tradition. My brother’s birthday is coming up, and he’s going to be so surprised! Thanks for posting!
Lisa, I’m so glad you found this recipe…
I was making these bars in the 60s. I don’t remember the sugar, but I do remember the peanut butter and corn syrup. Also, chips came in 6 oz packages then as well as the 12 oz, so it was one bag of each of the small bags melted together for the topping. Cut these small, they are so rich.
Now that they make gluten-free rice krispies we are totally trying these tonight, without the butterscotch, since they also have malt in them. So excited to try out a fun new recipe!
I just made these (tweaked to my liking) and they were super simple and delicious. Thanks! =)
