Usable Space-Before & After

pear-soup-001This empty space in our basement was not very usable and Dear had a plan to transform it from ugly to nice.

pear-soup-004Dear set his plan into motion. After taking measurements he built the sides and back and shelves to fit.

cupboard-in-basement-003After seeing if the pieces would actually fit he primed the wood and then painted the side and back pieces and stained the shelves. He set the pieces in using his fancy nail gun.

When the stain was totally dry he slid them in and they fit perfectly and firmly.

cupboard-in-basement-005His work was level but the existing walls weren’t so he added trim to cover up the crooked space.

cupboard-in-basement-009He primed the trim and installed it. He then gave the trim it’s final coat of paint.

2nd-t-day-008All finished and ready to load up the shelves.

These shelves are sturdy and can hold lots of weight. Now I have a very useful, usable space.

U is for Usable, Useful space. From Ugly to Nice.

Linking up to ABC Wednesday started by Mrs. Nesbitt and continued by Roger and the ABC Team!

Maybe in the future I’ll show you what I decided to fill these shelves with.

I’ll leave you with one of my first Christmas items that is now on the wall and let you find the 2 words starting with U!

Thinking About…

…where to hang my new sign.

15179065_10211384824404604_2422017100556303695_nBut before I move on to decorating for Christmas we are going to celebrate Thanksgiving again today with turkey, stuffing, candied sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and some pie.

15094290_10211352865765658_904969171776975063_nThis time we’ll have the meal and our loved ones under our roof. This old house will be full to the brim. There will be 16 of us. I hope to remember to take some photos, too.

15134678_10211344843205099_3740942303318054460_nDo any of you still have one of these vintage nut bowls? This was Dear’s mothers.

We had a full day with our kids yesterday. Dear made Swedish pancakes for brunch and we celebrated Laura’s birthday early. The guys went to see a movie while the girls watched the new Anne of Green Gables on PBS. When the guys got home we enjoyed chili and some episodes of The Crown. My dishwasher is getting a good workout.

15241842_10211385034569858_278018624717762034_nWe also have a four legged visitor, Rayna, right now and she gets very excited to see anyone coming to the door. Her tail is wagging as she see’s Dear coming in from gathering some rosemary for the turkey. We’ve enjoyed some walks during breaks in the rainfall. Animals are not the norm at this old house but Rayna behaves herself and is a mostly silent visitor. The swish of her tail hitting furniture and the click of her paws are the only noises she makes.

Happy Saturday to you all.

I Wonder…

I wonder as I wander out under the sky,
How Jesus, the Savior, did come for to die.
For poor, ornery people like you and like I
I wonder as I wander
Out under the sky.

Christmas is a time of wonder and joy.

This old house has been decked for this most wonderful time of year.

Our Christmas goodies are a combination of old and new. These mugs are from the late 80’s.

The kissing Santa and Mrs. Santa are from my MIL’s stash and are probably from the 50’s, made in Japan.

The Christmas angels and little girl bell are more old Christmas treasures from Dear’s mother.

Our humble entry, inside and out.

The living room with our fireplace. We are still talking about adding a mantle in the future.

This wooden nativity was purchased at Disneyland and is a set that I bought that could be handled and enjoyed by our kids when they were toddlers.

This rocker rocked all three of our children when they were babes.

The nativity is a more recent acquisition but the angel trio are from my MIL’s Christmas collection.

We have a new daughter in law this year so I decided to buy new stockings for our family of eight.

Waiting for some wonderful times of sipping away with friends and family.

Hoping for a most wonderful Christmas for all my friends in bloggy world.

Next post will reveal our sparsely decorated Charlie Brown Free Range Christmas tree.

I’m linking up to ABC Wednesday for W is for Wonder, Wonderful, Wooden, Waiting, and World.

Photobucket is holding all my photos from 2007-2015 hostage on their site. All my photos that I stored and uploaded from that site are now big ugly black and grey boxes with a message to pay big bucks to get them restored to my blog. It will take me a long time to restore thousands of posts.

Signs of Christmas

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here at this old house.

We are slowly getting things together for Christmas. I’m happy to say that our Christmas cards with letter and photo are on their way today. The sad thing is that the envelopes did not have enough glue on them to seal properly and I had to buy envelope sticker seals to seal them up properly. Sheesh. Next time I buy cards I’ll open the box up and check the envelopes…

Do you still send Christmas cards in the mail?

I’m linking up to signs, signs hosted by Lesley!
