Black and White…

Thinking of those long gone days and looking forward to my new scanner so I can pull out more oldies but goodies like these…

My mom with what I call the first 4. I was the baby of this first group of kids my parents had. Soon there would be 4 more…

Traveling somewhere with the thermoses of hot tea toted along…

Not quite sure about the curlers in my sister Kathy and Vera’s hair…

Easter fashions!

My mom and me. My mom was very stylish!

Our long labor day weekend has been full of good family events as we were enjoying the days before Andrew flies back to Camp Lejeune for his next deployment. Katie is taking him to the airport tonight which puts a lump in my throat.  We are trusting God for his care and provision for both Katie and Andrew during their time apart. Yesterday we had Swedish pancakes for breakfast with the crew and then Josh, Laura, Katie and Andrew went on a nice hike in the Cascade Mountain range. When they got home from their hike we had a yummy slow roasted rib dinner with my sister Lana and Steve joining us. Playing cards and a Sounders game topped off the day.

  1. Precious family photos…you were a little blondie…I’d never have guessed. Your mom was very stylish and so cute and young. She had her hands full with two families. What is the age difference between you and the next in line? Praying for Kati and Andrew…

  2. Oh Ellen, what adorable pictures. I can’t believe you had 7 siblings! Your Mother was so pretty, and yes, very stylish. I love that she often dressed you girls alike. Saying prayers for Andrew and Kati and all of you. laurie

  3. Scanners are amazing aren’t they? Great pictures. Tears welled up a bit in my eyes thinking of your girl sending her man off….praying and believing with all of you for his safety and peace for both of them…well really, all of you. Breathe out, be still, the tomb is empty, He is enough. Grace, grace. God’s grace!

  4. What cherished old b&w’s. I think I see more personality shining through b&w photos. Do you? Oh those good byes. We just said good bye to our son today. They go with God.

  5. I have followed your posts for over a year now. I don’t even remember how I came across your site or what made me want to follow you, but I’m still following along. Just had to let you know that I live across the U.S. of A. From you, yes, as in Wilmington, NC. Only 45 miles from your Katie & Andrew.
I have two adult children and two grandchildren, so I know all too well about those throat lumps. Our daughter and granddaughter live 5 houses from us. They leave our driveway..we stand there until we see her pull into her driveway..how crazy is that??…Our son, daughter-in-law, and grandson live 3 hours away…same thing, we watch until they turn the corner & can no longer see there car…
I’ve learned that lumps come in different sizes:
small, it’s there but you can still breathe..
medium, it’s there but breathing is more difficult..
large, it’s there – you know it’s there because you feel as if you can’t breathe at all.
Signing off now, just know that if you ever need a ‘get to them now’ mom, I will get to them and hold the fort ( pun intended) down until you & Dear arrive.
Now how do I give you my phone # and email address without putting it on your blog?
Blessings out to all. Mary Lou

  6. Wonderful memories for you in those black and white photos, Ellen. Being of the same era, I am reminded of similar ones from my own family. But there were only 5 of us kids, all more or less one year apart. Sitting on big boulders somewhere . . . and those pretty Easter dresses and little hats . . . Praying for Andrew and Katie too. God bless Andrew and keep him safe.

  7. Such precious black and whites. I’ve been reading my scanner manual this past week….I may be calling you:)
May God’s hand be upon your dear Andrew and Katie….I will keep them in prayer.

  8. Oh my, what treasured pictures you have! Your mom …. well, she was beautiful and still is!! This post is so precious and I am thinking of you all as Andrew heads off. So glad that Katie is staying with you while he’s gone! I’ve had my share of throat lumps this weekend too – ugh!

  9. I love the old black and white photos and the stories they tell… or don’t …
May the week ahead be filled with reminders of God’s care over your family.
As that lump in the throat goes and comes back many times over. . . may God’s promises be
    real every day.

  10. Love the old pictures. Brings back great fun memories. Love the camping ones, I think that’s Yosemite. Will be praying for Andrew, Katie and family. Please let us know when Andrew is actually deployed.

  11. I have yet to master the intricacies of the scanner, but your wonderful photos have given me a push to do so. Your mum is so pretty in every photo. I am always amazed at the stamina of the women of that generation – to bear and care for a large family, and at the end of the day to look so fresh and pretty!
Of course i will hold Andrew and Katie in prayer. Deployment is never easy, but Andrew will be comforted and buoyed by the knowledge that Katie has such wonderful family support.

  12. Loving those black and whites Ellen! What a wonderful gift to share with us. Your mom sure was fashionable and you were all adorable.
Praying everyday for Katie and Andrew. That is my commitment!

  13. What wonderful photos! I saw a resemblance to your Mom and my Mom when they were young, Ellen. It must be their Slavic genes (my Mom’s parents emigrated from the Ukraine) Your Mom It was so good to see your Mom looking so happy with her fried chicken dinner a few posts
    ago.

Your son-in-law and daughter will be in my prayers — safety for him in his deployment and comfort for both of them until they can be together again.
