How Great Thou Art ~ Hymn

George Beverly Shea died this week and because he was known for introducing this great hymn to the world at Billy Graham Crusades I decided to share it today on the day of Shea’s funeral in North Carolina. Click here to read about him. My father accepted Christ at a Billy Graham Crusade in Los Angeles in 1963 and that changed the course of our entire family.

How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the *worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the *rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then *I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, My God, how great thou art!

My father’s story was included with the stories in this book that Billy Graham’s grandsons collected.

About Ellen am a wife, mother, baba (grandmother) and a loyal friend. Jesus is my King and my hope is in my future with Him.

  1. What a testimony! I, too, have a family member who came to The Lord as a result of a Billy Graham crusade. I’m sure that’s true for many. Thank you for sharing your father’s and ultimately your family’s story!

  2. I love your family’s story, Ellen! I remember the crusades that used to come to town. Harv’s whole family was baptized as a result of one that came to their area. Many lives were changed because of men like Billy Graham who were obedient to the call to share the gospel

  3. What a wonderful story Ellen! This hymn is such a favourite and sooo appropriate for tomorrow’s earth day!!! This was sung during our church service today. Praise God that your father answered the alter call!

  4. Ellen! What a story! How big and how gracious is our God? Thank you for sharing this story and the hymn. As a young adult, I was first introduce to Billy Graham through my husband. We watched every TV broadcast we could. George Beverly Shea was a wonderful beginning, wasn’t he?

  5. Beautiful story, Ellen. I attended a Billy Graham Crusade in my city in 1968 and again in the 1990s. And there was nothing like hearing George Beverly Shea sing ‘How Great Thou Art’.
