Just a few of our Christmas things up close and personal. I’ll be sharing a few more in the near future.

I shared a story earlier in December about our church Toy Shop Project for needy families in our community. Our church was able to help 315 families with grocery gift cards and toys for their children. We had over 2000 new toys that we gave away. Our goal was 1800. What a wonderful experience to be able to share in this way in our own community.

I’m so thankful for a quiet week leading up to Christmas. How are your days?

Todays Thrifty Treasures ~ Beatrix Potter Books

In 1973 when I was in England I began a collection of Beatrix Potter Figurines and purchased a full set of her sweet little books for children. There are 23 books in the full set. Whenever I see a Beatrix Potter book at a thrift store in good shape I buy it. I found these 23 books at Goodwill for 79 cents each and I bought all 23 of them. They are in perfect shape and look as though they have never been read. A full set of Beatrix Potter books for under $20.00.

 

 

Table linens are another weakness of mine and I didn’t walk away from this either. I’ll have to see what occasion comes up for a table setting on this cloth.

Trim the Tree Thursday

We’ve always gone with the traditional red and green theme for our Christmas tree. We have thrown in some gold with the red and green. If I’m going to change up anything for Christmas it will reflect itself in our table settings and not the tree. There are so many ornaments we’ve collected over the years that we’d miss if they didn’t appear on the tree. I really love my Beatrix Potter ornaments. These are Hunca Munca and the Amiable Guinea Pig.

So here’s my dilemma this year. I live most of my days in Southern California because of my husband’s job but we celebrate Christmas where all my Christmas goodies are, in my home in Washington. My children all live in Washington. The last couple of years I’ve been home in Washington the whole month of December so I can decorate and get ready for Christmas. This year is an odd year because we decided it was time for our kids to come down and spend Christmas Eve with my extended family in Southern California. My parents (their grandparents) are 85-ish and we haven’t spent Christmas with them since about 1990!! So I’m only in Washington for 10 days which included Thanksgiving. I leave for California on the 6th of December. My kids fly down on the 23rd of December and spend Christmas Eve with my family. Then we jump on a plane Christmas morning at 6:30 am to fly back to Seattle for 10 days. Josh and his wife Laura will need to spend Christmas Day with Laura’s family since we hijacked them on Christmas Eve. So in typing all this out I have come to the conclusion that a Christmas Tree is just not going to work out for us this year. I’ll put up all the other decor and we’ll just concentrate on Christmas Stockings and forget the tree.

So…any photos you see of a tree will be my tree from last year!

Blue Monday ~ Beatrix Potter

 

I never get tired of sharing my sweet Beatrix Potter collection and I hope you aren’t tired of seeing them. These are the animals in my collection that have a lot of blue on them. I started my collection in 1973 when I was in England and added to them over a few years.

Fall Into Reading ~ 2008

It’s time to join Katrina at Callapidder Days for another round of Reading Fun starting September 22 and going till December 20th.

 

Fall is filling up with obligations on my part so I’m only going to put a few books on my Fall reading list. I’ll be reading my Bible on my quest to read every book of the Bible several times in a month before I move on to the next. I’m in the book of Mark right now. So here are the other books on my list.

Pink Saturday ~ Beatrix Potter

For my third Pink Saturday I’m combining Pink with my love of all things Beatrix Potter. I started my collection of Beatrix Potter figurines in 1973 while in England. I’ve picked out 3 of my 27 figurines. These three have pink on them and I am sharing the book they come from and an excerpt from the book.

The first figurine is of “Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail” from The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

 

 

Next is “Hunca Munca” from The Tale of Two Bad Mice

 

 

The third figurine I’m sharing is “Goody Tiptoes” from The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes

The Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter

 

I’ve really been enjoying this series by mystery writer Susan Wittig Albert. Beatrix Potter has been a favorite of mine for years and escaping into the Lake District with Beatrix and talking animals and mystery is a joy for me. I’ve finished the first two books in the series. Right now there are two more books already published.

 

I found the first book in the series at the Friend’s of the Library for 50 cents. I checked out the second book from the library. I’m going to have to request or get on a waiting list for the next ones, The Tale of Cuckoo Brow Wood and The Tale of Hawthorn House. If you like English village life, a blend of fact and fiction, and mystery, not to mention great animal characters you’ll love this series…
