Tablescape Thursday ~ Condo Barscape Revisited

Time flies when you travel north and south! It’s almost Thursday again and time for some more Tablescaping fun. I’m re-showing two variations on table settings at our bar in our little condo. I haven’t had time to think about new settings yet in this new year in my Southern California location. Susan at Between Naps on the Porch is the hostess for this fun event. Click on over and see the variety of fun, romantic, elegant, practical table settings that have been created.

The chargers are from TJ Maxx clearance. I used my everyday white dinner plates and then added the salad plate that I found at Marshall’s on clearance. I love plates with country scenes on them. The martini glasses, that I use for pretty desserts, too, were from target a couple years ago.

I changed up the tablesetting at the bar with these square grey chargers and square white plates and a small decorative plates that are “White Russian” plates. I love the little cocktail glasses I found with the Russian Cossack dancers on them. The napkin rings were a gift from my DIL and Son Christmas 2008.

Now head on over to Susan’s for more Tablescape inspiration.

WFW ~ Psalm 104: 1-4

Psalm 104

O LORD My God, You Are Very Great

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD my God, you are very great!
You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
2covering yourself with light as with a garment,
stretching out the heavens like a tent.
3He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters;he makes the clouds his chariot;
he rides on the wings of the wind;
4he makes his messengers winds,
his ministers a flaming fire.

Outdoor Wednesday ~ Back in the Hood…

It’s time to get your outdoor shots together for Outdoor Wednesday hosted by Susan a Southern DayDreamer! Thanks Susan!

It’s great to be in Sunny Southern California again and to resume my walks with Willow! Sheesh, it’s been over 8 weeks since we last walked! The sun peeked over the Santa Monica Mountains as we started out. Willow said “that’s a nice shot”. So I said, “Okay I’ll take a picture.”  When Bloggers walk they are always looking for a great shot.

After we made it up the first hill huffing and puffing a little (remember it’s been awhile since we’ve walked)  we spotted this great Poinsettia plant and I thought of Ruby Tuesday…except it’s almost Wednesday so this will work for O.W.

Hope your week is going well and that you are surviving whatever weather is being thrown at you!!

Like a Bird Flying South…

Dear and I boarded a flight at Seatac Airport on Sunday afternoon to LAX with very little Security issues and once again made the comment …
“Flying out of Seattle is so nice compared to other airports”!! I got this shot of Rainier before everything clouded over!

Then we talked to our seating companion who flew out of Canada to the U.S. and told us he had to go through 4 security screenings and then had to have a full body search. He couldn’t have anything under the seat in front of him except for a size restricted personal bag, no carry on luggage.  So flying into the U.S. is a bit tough right now…

We arrived in L.A. and made it back to the condo in great time hardly ever needing to use our brakes which is a good thing because our brake lights were not working! Thank you to my sister Kathy and our BIL Len being brave enough to deliver that car without brake lights to us at the airport.

Dear caught a icky bug and is under the weather so I had to pick him up from work early today. I was able to pick up the part we needed for the car and it’s working beautifully now so I’ll make a visit to the CHP tomorrow and have them OK the repair so we don’t have to pay a fine. Oh right I forgot to tell you that over the Christmas break my brother from Dallas was using our car and got a ticket for not having brake lights. Ouch! We had no idea the brake lights weren’t working when we loaned him the car…

Today I’ve enjoyed the lovely winter skies here in Camarillo. Sunny and warm with great clouds. Tomorrow Willow and I will resume our walks! Yippee! So much to catch up on. Dear cleaned the condo real nice before he came north so I don’t have much to do around here. Hope you all are getting in the swing of things in 2010!

Hot Tea Month Blog-a-thon ~ Week One…

Week 1: “Tea as a mood lifter: How does tea improve your day? What is your favorite time for a nice, hot cuppa?”

My tea drinking experience started early in my Russian culture upbringing. Tea was always requested when people were tired or needed a lift during the afternoon. Drinking tea takes me back and gives me the sense of the comfort of home…

I don’t ever remember using tea-cups in our Russian gatherings for tea. Typically a glass was used served with a bowl under it. Many of the children and older folk would pour their tea into the bowl and drink it out of the bowl. There were fancier glass holders called podstakahnyik that I’ve posted a couple of pictures of here. Literally translated it means under the glass. Any Russians out there can correct me if I got that wrong. Russia has two national drinks, tea (chai) and vodka.

I came across these very old Paintings of Russians drinking tea (chai) and I wanted to share them. This first photo is from 1889.

I would love to own one of these older Samovars. See the glasses on the bowls. She is pouring the hot water into the glasses with a strong steep of tea. The concentrate of tea is in a small pot that fits on top of the Samovar.

“Of all beverages, tea alone has the proverbial power to relieve toska, the sadness and melancholy which traditionally burden the Russian spirit. The samovar which dispenses it is a time-honored symbol of Russian hospitality. It stands for the hearth, the warmth of a Russian welcome, the restorative powers of a glass of tea around the stove after hours in sub-zero temperatures. The word means ’self-boiler’ and the samovar is just that, a portable water heater made traditionally of brass and fueled with pine cones or charcoal. On top of it rests a teapot containing a powerful infusion. To pour a glass of tea, a little of this concentrate is diluted with boiling water from the urn. This way it is always fresh never stewed.”

After serving the tea the guests will pour the tea out of their glasses into their bowls and sip the tea from the bowl. Quotes from The Food and Cooking of Russia by Leslie Chamberlain.

This is how I remember drinking tea with my grandparents and relatives growing up.

Tea is “Chai” in russian, (not the now popular Chai drink you find at Starbuck’s). Chai is just plain old steeped tea with boiled water added to your desired strength.  In our Russian culture it is an important part of a meal. We usually have it at the end of a meal. Many times we’ll have it in the middle of the day too. It’s has been associated with rest, comfort and refreshment. It’s just common for us to say at the end of the meal, “Chai?”  or “Who wants Chai?”

When I have my “Russian” crowd over these are what I serve chai in. I have 12 of them and they are perfect to see the strength you want your tea to be. Some add lemon, some add cream, some have it black. I’ll have to share in a later post the Varenya that my mom and other Russian ladies make to add to tea. It’s a fruit based syrupy liquid to sweeten and flavor your tea instead of sugar.

In my younger days we attended a church where meals were commonly served during holidays, after funerals, and weddings. Part of the meal was the tea service. We had the typical glass and bowls for our tea. Small teapots with the tea steeping and large Tea kettles with boiled water would be put on the tables. There was always a bowl of sugar cubes to sweeten the tea. My cousins and I would build sugar cube bridges across the inside of our tea glass and then watch the hot water melt them down. Fun times :0)

In this painting again they are drinking tea from the bowl. Statistically the Russians are among the world’s top three tea-drinking nations (with Britain and Japan).

I With Thee Would Begin ~ Hymn

I With Thee Would Begin

I with Thee would begin, O my Savior so dear,
On the way that I still must pursue;
I with Thee would begin every day granted here,
As my earnest resolve I renew
To be and remain Thine forever.

I with Thee would begin and go forth in Thy Name,
Which alone doth salvation bestow;
Fold me close to Thy breast where found joy all who came,
There is refuge for me, too, I know,
Though all in this world is confusion.

Let Thy Word all divine be my lamp in whose light
I may constantly keep to Thy way;
And each day wouldst Thou cleanse me anew, make me white
In the blood shed for me on that day
The cross Thou didst suffer, Lord Jesus.

I with Thee would begin—yea, and hear one more prayer,
I would close with Thee, too, my brief day,
And when daylight has failed, let me sleep in Thy care,
Until waking Thy child Thou dost say,
“Come, live with Me ever in Heaven.”

words: Karolina W. Sandall-Berg, circa 1875, translated from Swedish to English A. Samuel Walgren (1885-1940), music W. Theodor Soderberg, 1884.

ht: Cyberhymnal

I read this paragraph by Cliff Barrows about this hymn in Crusader Hymns and Hymn Stories;

“In its original form, this is a Swedish hymn. Because the translation is literal, you may find that the sentence structure is occasionally inverted and the meaning is a bit obscure. But if you make the effort to understand, you will find that it is a prayer that we may start anew- right now – in the strength of Christ with guidance from His Word. And if you take the trouble to sing it, you will enjoy its “Swedish style” melody.”

The Night Before…

the Blue Moon I took these shots. I wanted to be able to photograph the Blue Moon event on the 31st but we were clouded over and rainy all night long…

Today is my last full day in Washington State. We fly back to Southern California tomorrow. Back to reality! I’m putting Christmas back up into the attic and doing a little dusting and washing some linens. Then I get to decide what to pack to take back to the condo. Katie’s car is all fixed from her accident. Dear is one handy guy. He pounded out, replaced the bumper and the tail light and primed and painted and it looks like new! Yesterday and today we’ve gotten some good gusts of wind and lots of rain. We just might have to take the patio cover off today.

So I think I’ve decided I’ll be calling 2010…twenty ten. How about you?  My brother has been writing it MMX.

That’s it for my Saturday ramblings….enjoy the rest of your weekend!
