In Other Words Tuesday ~

 

 

“If we could understand everything God does, then He’d have to be a small god–small enough to fit in our little minds.”~ Randy Alcorn ~

This quote kept sending my mind back to Job. So I decided the best response and “other words” would be to quote from this book that confirms over and again that we do not understand and comprehend our God with our limitations on this earth.

Excerpts from Job:

Job 38: 1-2, 4-5

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.

Job 40: 1-5

And the Lord said to Job:

Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.

Then Job answered the Lord and said: Behold I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed not further.

Job 42: 1-6

Then Job answered the Lord and said:

I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me. I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

The upside to this is that God teaches us how He wants us to behave even if we don’t understand Him fully or even partially, we do have His instructions to us about the way He wants us to behave. We need to respond in obedience to what He says and intructs us to do on this earth. We trust and hope in our future with Him where we will see Him as He is…

Romans 11: 33-36 ~

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?

For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”

In Other Words Tuesday ~ Crown of Roses?

 Iris at Sting My Heart has chosen the following quote for “In Other Words Tuesday“.

 “They gave our Master a crown of thorns. Why do we hope for a crown of roses?”

The New Testament does not paint a rosy picture for the Christian life on this Earth. Instead it assures us that if we follow Christ wholeheartedly we will face trials and persecutions. Because we are identified with Christ we will receive much of the same bad treatment and rejection He received.

II Timothy 3:12 ~  Indeed, all who desire to live a Godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

I Peter 4:12 ~ Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.

And here’s the one that I’ve been chewing on these last few days…

James 1:2-4 ~ Count it all joy my brothers when you meet trials of various kinds for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have it full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 

The trials are inevitable. How will I react?  How should I behave in the midst of these trials? Will I choose joy trusting in Almighty God and His plans and purposes? I hope so. I want to experience steadfastness. I want to rejoice and be glad when Christ’s glory is revealed. I choose to trust that God will teach me in and during my trials to react and behave in a way that let’s steadfastness have its full effect bringing me homeward towards perfection and completeness, lacking nothing. I don’t want a crown of roses now, I want a crown of life when I get to heaven so I can cast it at Jesus’ feet…

Woman To Woman ~ “Learning to Say No”

“Learning to say no”

A lot of women feel like they have to “do it all”, regardless of what may be realistic for them. Do you fall into this category? Can you just not resist the urge to be involved in everything? Or have you learned to say no? Have you taken a step backward and seen positive results? Share your frustrations or share your advice… Tell us what you think about the current trend to be all things to all people.

 I think contentment might go hand in hand with this issue of not being able to say no. Are you content right now where you are in your life? Wherever you find yourself today you are called to be content. When you are I think you will better realize what you can do right now and what is not wise for you to do right now.

What stage of life are you in?

What are your responsibilites that go with this stage of life?

What are your gifts?

What is God calling you to do?

Think about these things. Listen to what God is motivating you to do. Respond to those things and say no to things that just don’t fit into your life right now. Of course this just covers all the optional things. There are crisis situations and family situations and the call God puts on our lives to be hospitable and to care for one another that will call you into action regardless of whether you want to say yes or not…

Caring for elderly parents

Caring for sick children or a sick spouse

Helping those in the body who are suffering

When these situations come crashing into your life you need to step back and realize that this might be all you are called to do right now and rest in this. It’s all the optional stuff that we think we need to do that can really tax our time and emotions. Consider leaving some of this stuff behind so you are better equipped for what God is truly calling you to do in your giftedness.

We Aren’t Normal

My family is not normal. This is a good thing. Today I had brunch with my sister her 2 daughters and another sister’s daughter. We are friends. We are different from each other. We love each other. We like to get together and be together. We aren’t checking to see if we had our daily devotions today. We are loving on each other, caring for each other, accepting each other, praying for each other and waiting on God to do His sanctifying work in our lives. If we fall, we love each other and help each other get up. If we have an emotional melt down we wait for that to pass and see what God taught us through that. We don’t panic and wonder if we’ve lost our salvation. We’ve seen a lot in my family. There are plenty of people to watch after all. We trust God that He will bring us all through the ups and downs of our lives here on earth. What we do and need to do is to love each other dearly. Above all else, love each other dearly… That’s what I want to do. That’s what I want to encourage you to do.

I Peter 4:8  (ESV) ~

Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

(NIV) ~

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

(NASB)

Above all keep fervent in your love for one another because love covers a multitude of sins.

The Message ~

Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it. Love makes up for practically anything.

We’re not normal. We are certainly not perfect. But, we love each other and that covers a lot of kasha! (Russian for oatmeal, or messy issues….)

 

In Other Words Tuesday ~

This Tuesday Sting My Heart is  hosting “In Other Words”, a meme that originated on Christian Women Online. A quote is chosen by the host to consider and we are invited to write our “take” on the quote. Here is the quote that was chosen for Tuesday August 14th.

Psalm 34:19 ~
Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Isaiah 43:1-3

But now, this is what the Lord says-
he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel;
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

Isaiah 43:18-19~
Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.

So God promises to bring us through the wilderness. He does not abandon us. We can cling to these next great promises for our future…

Isaiah 35: 9,10 ~
But only the redeemed will walk there,
and the ransomed of the Lord will return.
They will enter Zion with singing;
everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them,
and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Romans 15: 4~
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

So I hope these verses encourage you to know that in the midst of our wilderness times, our times in the desert, and times of affliction (which are inevitable here on this earth), our hope, the promise that sustains us and lets us say “blessed be the Lord” is that Jesus has gone before us on this wilderness road and He promises because of his saving grace to bring us through our wilderness to our amazing gift in the future in heaven with Him. We have a future with Him without “sorrow and sighing.”  

Romans 15:13 ~
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Tuesdays ~ In Other Words

 My husband and I had an interesting conversation about this Mary/Martha experience. Two of the questions we asked were,

Did Martha have to be at Jesus’ feet to experience intimacy?

This incident happened before the Holy Spirit indwelled believers. Jesus was asking Martha to be with Him while He was there. This was the better part. She was not experiencing Him in the kitchen. She was bothered and grumbly. Her service wasn’t unto Him. She was consumed with her task and that Mary wasn’t helping her. He was with them physically for a short time and Mary chose the better part.

What is the difference in our situations from Mary & Martha’s experience?

Today with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit we have the opportunity to have intimacy with Jesus when we are doing service He has called us to do. We can experience intimacy in the kitchen as well as sitting quietly in worship through reading His word, in the livingroom.

It’s not just the kitchen that keeps us from sitting at Jesus’ feet. Any care of the world can keep us from experiencing our rest in the Lord. Also, it doesn’t have to be one or the other, the kitchen or the livingroom. I think it’s more about where God wants you to be and entering that place with Him. We can have intimacy in the middle of a battle.

Mathew 11:28-29 ~ Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yolk is easy and my burden is light.

Entering God’s rest is being where God wants you to be empowered by His Spirit. It does not mean the absence of difficulties. God’s rest is filled with battle, enemies, obstacles and danger. Moving forward to accomplish everything He has given you to accomplish with His power allows you to enter His rest. When we yolk up with Jesus we will have intimacy in the most unlikely places and experiences.

Show & Tell Friday ~ Lincoln’s Devotional

 I found this book at Goodwill this week.

The newly-found book of daily Scriptural messages and inspirational verse in which Abraham Lincoln signed his name – a book he used and cherished, revealing a faith you can share. This copy was copyrighted in 1957.

The devotional portion of this volume contains the entire text of “The Believer’s Daily Treasure; or , Texts of Scripture Arranged for Every Day in the Year,” published in 1852 by the Religious Tract Society of London, England. The material is reprinted as it appears in the copy of the book which Abraham Lincoln owned, and therefore contains the several inconsistencies and typographical errors found in the original edition.

Communion with God 

 a Source of Joy

There be many that say, Who will show us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou has put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. Psalm iv. 6, 7.

Lord, what is life? if spent with thee,

In Other Words Tuesday ~ July 10th


 

This week’s quote is:

“Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing yet had been done.” ~ C. S. Lewis 

This quote got me thinking that as a human being it is very easy to become self-reliant. It is easy to go through a whole day without thinking of my creator, my God. In order to realize my need for God I need to go to Him everday, empty myself and say whatever you would have me do today I’m willing to do it. Whatever it is you want me to do I’m sure you will provide the means and the capacity for it to get done. I am willing. Here I am. What do you have for me today? I might have failed yesterday but today is a new day and I’m here Lord and I know you are there, so forgive me and please use me today to accomplish whatever I can for You. Please give me your eyes to see the people you put in my path today. My husband, my children, the grocery checker, the driver in front of me, the mailman, the homeless beggar on the street, the mean kid at the park. Lead me to show them your love. I’m relying on You Lord to give me the strength and the desire and the love to accomplish small and large things for you. Today maybe it’s just a smile, a pat on the hand, a word of encouragement, a load of laundry. Tomorrow something different or maybe just the same. Lord help me never to forget to come before you, to worship you, to praise you, to honor you in word and deed, and to obey you. Help me to know I need to do this everyday, every hour of the day.

Your Thoughts ~ Susannah Spurgeon ~ Romans 12: 1-2

Woman to Woman: “Share an important quote and what it means to you.”

 

A while back, Lana, at  Above the Clouds wrote about how Bible Study can be illustrated with these Matryoshka dolls. I’m paraphrasing but the idea is that there is always more to find, deeper to go. I’m going to use this illustration in how God has been going into my mind, revealing thoughts that need to be captured for Him. Thoughts within thoughts within thoughts. The quote I chose to segue off of is the following by Susannah Spurgeon:

“The God who can understand your thoughts ‘afar off’ has the power to restrain them; no, more than that; before they reach you, while they are yet distant and unexpressed, he will purify and cleanse them, so that they shall enter your heart as angel whispers, and pass your lips only as words of love and blessing.” ~ Susannah Spurgeon

A few years ago I started to memorize Romans 12:1-3. This proved to be a mind changing experience for me. God began working on me in regards to my mind. He showed me wrong (sinful) patterns of thought that I entertained in my mind. He started with obvious big bad thoughts “the big outer doll”, if you will. Then He opened up doll after doll to show me how the wickedness in my mind was infecting my heart.  These thought patterns, fantasies, scenarios, rebuttals, defenses, gave me bad attitudes toward loved ones and wrong justifications about my behaviour. I knew God wanted me to say no to them. He showed me with practice in obedience to say no each time the same patterns would force their way into my mind. I had to say no a lot before some would desist! This was revolutionary for me. Mind you, we still have many more dolls to work on. Just look at all of them in that photo! ) Sometimes I even try to put the same dolls back together. I am looking forward to the day that I’ll meet my Savior “face to face” by His grace with the last solid doll in my hand!

 

Romans 12: 1-2

I with Susannah want to be brave enough to pray, “Dear Master, I make your servant David’s prayer my own and say ‘Search me O God and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Spring Reading Challenge Wrap Up

 

  • What was the best book you read this spring? Fiction: Clouds of Witness by Dorothy L. Sayers , Non-Fiction: Seeing and Savoring Christ by John Piper
  • What book could you have done without? I didn’t have a long enough book list to have to have an answer to this one. They were all worth reading.
  • Did you try out a new author this spring? If so, which one, and will you be reading that author again? Yes, the new author I tried was Dorothy L. Sayers and I will definitely read her again.
  • If there were books you didn’t finish, tell us why. Did you run out of time? Realize those books weren’t worth it? I never got around to Harry Potter #6. I’ve read it before and wanted to read it before #7 came out…
  • Did you come across a book or two on other participants’ lists that you’re planning to add to your own to-be-read pile? Which ones?  Yes, Stepping Heavenward by Prentiss. I bought it and am reading it.
  • What did you learn — about anything — through this challenge? Maybe you learned something about yourself or your reading style, maybe you learned not to pick so many nonfiction books for a challenge, maybe you learned something from a book you read. Whatever it is, share! I learned that I can read a lot more than I have in the past. There is time to read. I’m a multi-book reader (more than one at a time). I’ve learned I’ll enjoy and digest non-fiction more if I only read a chapter at a time. I have a stack of 4-6 books on my nightstand and I try to read a little out of each in the evening instead of watching TV.
  • What was the best part of the Spring Reading Thing? Meeting other readers and seeing the hundreds of books I’ve never read.
  • Any other thoughts, impressions, or comments. I like to take reading a step further by recording any sections of the book that stand out to me.
  • I will definitely participate in a fall reading challenge!
  • I’ll be posting a review of  When People Are Big and God is Small soon. 🙂
