Your Thoughts ~ Susannah Spurgeon ~ Romans 12: 1-2

Woman to Woman: “Share an important quote and what it means to you.”

A while back, Lana, at  Above the Clouds wrote about how Bible Study can be illustrated with these Matryoshka dolls. I’m paraphrasing but the idea is that there is always more to find, deeper to go. I’m going to use this illustration in how God has been going into my mind, revealing thoughts that need to be captured for Him. Thoughts within thoughts within thoughts. The quote I chose to segue off of is the following by Susannah Spurgeon:

“The God who can understand your thoughts ‘afar off’ has the power to restrain them; no, more than that; before they reach you, while they are yet distant and unexpressed, he will purify and cleanse them, so that they shall enter your heart as angel whispers, and pass your lips only as words of love and blessing.” ~ Susannah Spurgeon

A few years ago I started to memorize Romans 12:1-3. This proved to be a mind changing experience for me. God began working on me in regards to my mind. He showed me wrong (sinful) patterns of thought that I entertained in my mind. He started with obvious big bad thoughts “the big outer doll”, if you will. Then He opened up doll after doll to show me how the wickedness in my mind was infecting my heart.  These thought patterns, fantasies, scenarios, rebuttals, defenses, gave me bad attitudes toward loved ones and wrong justifications about my behaviour. I knew God wanted me to say no to them. He showed me with practice in obedience to say no each time the same patterns would force their way into my mind. I had to say no a lot before some would desist! This was revolutionary for me. Mind you, we still have many more dolls to work on. Just look at all of them in that photo! ) Sometimes I even try to put the same dolls back together. I am looking forward to the day that I’ll meet my Savior “face to face” by His grace with the last solid doll in my hand!

Romans 12: 1-2

I with Susannah want to be brave enough to pray, “Dear Master, I make your servant David’s prayer my own and say ‘Search me O God and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

  1. Taking control of our thoughts is the first step in overcoming so many problem areas of our lives. God works with me on this ALL THE TIME! It is so easy to act improperly if we have laid the groundwork of thinking improperly–and vise versa, of course!

Randi, I’m with you on the “God works with me on this ALL THE TIME! Blessings on your journey…

Susan, You are very welcome. Thanks for your encouragement!

  3. I check your blog everyday, but I want to be better at letting you know how you’re encourageing me! This post is so true Ellen! During my 8 month period of panic attacks a few years ago, the Lord showed me how to be more conscious of my thoughts. If my fears and worries were creeping in, I learned how to take those directly to Jesus, sometimes even calling out in an audible voice and asking Him to take control. It’s definitely something that takes intentional effort. I will pray with you that the Lord would continue to show us how to let Him change us. I love you!

My dear Laura, I thank God for you! Thank you very much for your comments.

  4. I love the doll analogy. I’ve been praying 2 Cor 10:3-5 and 1 Thess 5:23. May there be no “dolls” left until we are complete in Him. THank you for the blessing of this post!

Hi Rabbit, I looked both of those passages up and they are great ones to memorize. Praying with you that we can “take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ”! blessings…

  6. I love the comparison to the Matryoshka dolls! Your thoughts are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing.

Crissybug, Those dolls are part of my heritage so it’s easy to relate to them..blessings.

  7. I am not sure who it was who made the statement: “Thoughts are like birds…they are going to fly over your head. But you are the one who decides whether or not they get to make a nest in your hat.” We each choose what we will dwell on, where we will put our focus. It seems you have taken steps to truly “choose the better part”.
I’m glad to see you join in W2W. I look forward to exploring more of your blog.

  11. A beautiful post, Ellen. I too memorized Romans 12:1-2 this past year and was astonished at how much God revealed, renewed and transformed. I had reached a comfortable place of piety that was uprooted to the praise of His glory. I like the way you put it here:
“He showed me with practice in obedience to say no each time the same patterns would force their way into my mind.”
The practice of obedience is essential, and truly His grace every opportunity, even of affliction, to give them to us. Thanks.

Elle, God is so good to keep after us. Blessings on you…

  12. Wonderful thoughts and words! The thing that I have always been aware of in those verses is that they are in the present tense: “present your bodies as a living sacrifice” and “be transformed by the renewing of your mind”. Those are phrases that are not in the past, but as instruction for continuance. That’s such a challenge.
Thanks for your openness — this was beautiful.

Morning Glory, Blessings on you and your thoughts. I appreciate your comments…
