When were were driving the Heritage Trail on a Sunday in Indiana it didn’t take us long to figure out that there was a church gathering happening in a room in this barn.
All the horses were unhitched from their buggies.
At one point a fussy little one had to be taken out to the buggy for something to soothe the tears.

We are in the country again this weekend in Northeastern Washington State. The guys are working on finishing up a staircase project while us girls are walking and enjoying other things. The big storm that was suppose to hit the Western part of our state fizzled out. That’s okay by us. Hope your weekend is filled with peace.

Hi Ellen, what a fabulous post. From the look of the buggies, I would guess that you were in Swiss Amish country. We have two Swiss communities here that originated in Indiana and use this style buggy. Around here church is held in barns, shops, basements and in houses. The important thing is gathering together every other week to worship. If you ever come upon a scene like this on a Tuesday or Thursday during fall, winter or early spring, a wedding is no doubt being held. Several years ago during the summer I went to visit Amish friends and the yard was filled with buggies, a funeral was being held for a terminally ill children. We saw wagons like that around a farm house on a Sunday morning and then the next day the man at the produce stand where we went told us that Amish people do not necessarily have a church building, but meet at the (I think he said) Elder’s home or another place of his choosing. I used to remember more about what we learned when we were there.

Now that is one part of the Amish life and worship I would love to witness first hand so I’m thrilled to see your photos of the event as it happened live!
I did think it was a bit odd for the father? to be taking out the little one as I thought the mothers always kept the wee ones especially the daughters as they worship, men on one side and ladies on the other.
