Mother’s Day ~ World War II

This is Dear’s grandfather, his father Rex, one of Rex’s sisters and Rex’s mom, Nettie. Rex honored his parents his whole life and left this great legacy to his two sons. Nettie died 2 months before Rex, who died of complications due to lung cancer in 1985.

This is a Mother’s Day card that Rex sent his mom in the 1940’s. His mom framed it.

On the back of the frame here is some history of what was happening with Rex during World War II and how Nettie felt. We called Nettie, Gommy. Our kids called Nettie, Gommy Gommy.

I’m so happy that she wrote this history on the back of the frame. This last photo is of Dear, Gommy, and Rex.

Hope a happy Mother’s Day weekend is in store for all of you. The weather is supposed to be summery here in the Pacific Northwest. Maybe we’ll even put our patio covers up. We will definitely do some outdoor activities!

The Heritage…

I was struggling with how to share all the photos I took at our nephew Caleb’s and new niece Marie’s wedding this past Saturday. This new couple is so blessed with an amazing legacy of marriage. longevity so that is where I decided to start. The fathers, the mothers, the grandparents, and the great grandparents. Over 350 years of marriage was represented!  73 years, 70 years, over 50 years, over 30 years, over 20 years…those are amazing numbers in this day and age.

Caleb & Marie7The father of the groom, my brother Steve, with the groom Caleb. Loved watching their interactions while they waited for the Bride to appear in the distance.  (Now I’m struggling with where I should be putting commas! Added pressure with so many English majors in this family!)

Caleb & Marie4My sister-in-law Kelly, the mother of the groom.

C & M wedding 5Caleb’s grandparents (my parents) watching the wedding via facetime at their apartment. How cute are they all dressed up for the wedding from afar!? They have been married for 70 years!

Father walking his first daughter to get married down the aisle. They were both fighting back the tears. Marie has two younger sisters.

Caleb & Marie13Both fathers officiated the wedding side by side.

IMGP0829It was great, Todd prompted Caleb for his vows and Steve prompted Marie for her vows.

And then all the grandparents came up to pray a blessing over this young couple.

IMGP0836What a beautiful moment representing 364 years of marriage!

I’ll be sharing more posts soon because there’s the bride, the groom, the flower girls, the extended families, the venue, the tables, the fabulous way they had us find our assigned tables, etc. etc…

I’m feeling more alive today. Yesterday was a do nothing recuperation day for me. How’s your August going?

Buh buh buh buh B!

It’s time to present something for the letter B at Jenny’s Alphabe-Thursday. I was scratching my head wondering what to post and then I thought why not bore all of you with some brief bullet points about ellen b. I hope by now you’ve noticed the letter b‘s in this post are highlighted in blue!

I’ve always been ellen b. My maiden name and married name begin with the letter B. Here I am in my predominately blue apron doing a cooking demonstration with some of the Mennonite Girls Can Cook at Lepp Farm Market in British Columbia.

I’m not Mennonite but the Mennonite Girls adopted me because many of our recipes are similar since my heritage is 100% Russian. We started with a blog together and now we have our very own cookbook!

This is one of my recipes in the book from my mother Nadia Bagdanov for Blintzes! You can order the book at Amazon! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d have some recipes in a published cookbook but blogging has a way of taking you to places you never dreamed of.

Speaking of being published, another brief story I wrote was published in this book…

It’s the story of my father coming to Christ at the Billy Graham Crusades in Los Angeles in 1963 and the impact that had on the Bagdanov family. You can read my post about that here.

After my father came to Christ we stayed in a church he was raised in until he decided to be baptized. At that point the group we were part of ostracized him and we joined the Russian Baptist Church where my Babushka attended. Babushka is the name for grandmother in Russian. My maternal grandmother was a wonderful lady who raised 3 children and was an amazing embroiderer even though she only had one hand. She lost one of her arms from the elbow down when she was a little girl in Russia. My mother had been raised Baptist but left the church when she married my dad and then we all ended up rejoining the Baptist church. Here’s a photo of my little maternal Babushka. We all really loved her!

Funny side note: There was a rumor in the Persian Village where my parents were married that my father could not have children. Well that rumor was put to rest when my parents ended up having 9 children. You might be wondering how my parents ended up in Persia since they are Russian. Both of their families fled Russia separately in the early 1930’s because of religious persecution. They traveled on foot into Iran and settled in villages outside of Tehran.

Russian Baptists can sometimes be quite legalistic. No dancing, drinking, smoking, playing cards, or going to movies. Thankfully my parents weren’t strict Legalists. They even took us to the drive-in theater to see all the great Walt Disney Movies growing up. But they’d still be surprised to know their daughter enjoys one of these every now and then.

A Bloody Mary. Maybe I’m on the carefree, wild side because of my birth order. I was #4. I have 2 older sisters and an older brother. The fact that I was the baby of the family for 7 years before 3 more brothers and a sister were born into our family might have something to do with my “who cares” attitude!

Before I stop my babbling I wanted to share that we are planning a wedding for our daughter and her Marine husband Andrew in January of 2012, after Andrew returns from his first deployment. We booked the wedding venue today. We chose Blue Ribbon on Lake Union in Seattle because of their total package weddings and the fact that they have a military clause that will allow us to change the date if we have to. Andrew and Katie got married in a civil ceremony on March 11th of this year in North Carolina. Our friends and family will come together to celebrate that union at a wedding ceremony to offer belated witness to their vows. One of my younger brothers who is a pastor will perform the ceremony next January.

Hope you made it to the end of my bullet point post. I’ll be coming around before you know it to see what you’ve been up to with the letter B! Thank you Jenny for hosting this meme!

Going Retro…

Today is the anniversary of the Flag raising at Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima.

This was in 1970 when my girlfriend Heidi and I toured Washington D.C. That’s the last time I was in Washington D.C. I’m looking forward to visiting D.C. for the 2nd time in May of this year.

Heidi and I spent a while in Michigan and the East Coast with several different Russian families we knew.

I’m looking forward to being in D.C. with my digital camera.

I’m pretty sure this was Christmas in 1974 just after we were married. This photo was taken at Dear’s parents home.

Our traditional Christmas morning breakfast at my Babushka Vera’s apartment next door to the Russian Baptist Church in Los Angeles. This is a photo of our family and our maternal cousins. My Babushka is in the pink and white next to my mother.

This is our niece Jenna. She was our first niece and she is just as cute today!

Oh and the snow that was suppose to come hasn’t yet. Now they are threatening us for this evening. We aren’t holding our breath.

It’s Not Over Yet…

…we’re still in the midst of celebrating here. Monday is our daughter Katie’s 25th birthday. Really? How can it be that she is 25?

To celebrate we are going out for Italian and then headed for some fun at the bowling alley. I’ll be sitting and watching and taking photos since my tennis elbow which seems to be a shooting elbow is keeping me sidelined. In the meantime here are photos from our glorious Christmas day.

Santa was very generous with all of us. We start our Christmas morning with opening the gifts in our stockings. Then we head to the breakfast table. This year we went around the table reading the Christmas story from the Bible in Luke chapter 2. Next Dear cooked up his famous Swedish pancakes that are a Christmas morning tradition we will not give up! Dear is half Swedish from his mother’s side. It’s fun to know that Dear’s only brother is also busy cooking up Swedish pancakes at his home in Southern California for his family.

Now we head to the tree to open all the bounty. We all said we were cutting down this year but when you have 7 adults exchanging gifts cutting down is still a lot! Everyone was grateful, surprised, and overwhelmed with the love shared.

While Dear and I prepared for our meal together, the kids had a few rounds of their new game, Blokus.

The kids played with their new toys and Dear and I prepared our main meal of the day.  The red goblets were a gift from our son and daughter in love. I put them to immediate use. Dinner was all very tasty. Dear smoked our prime rib in his new smoker. We had potatoes, creamed corn, salad and Yorkshire Pudding to top it off.

Katie, the birthday girl, and her fiance Andrew. Andrew is a Marine and took leave to come to our house for Christmas from North Carolina. Katie is so pleased that she can have him here for Christmas, her birthday, and for New Years!

Our son Josh and our DIL Laura.

Our son Dan who was able to travel from Eastern Washington for our time together. He had to leave early on Sunday morning to make it back for his work shift that started at 8:00 P.M. on Sunday.

Dear and me enjoying the wonder of it all.

More sweets then have seen the inside of my house for the whole year all together in this place.

Together for 67 Years!

Today is my mom and pop’s wedding anniversary. They are 87 years old. They were married in Tehran, Iran in 1943. Back then they called it Persia. They immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1947. They had 9 children but lost their first daughter to an illness when she was just two. She is buried in Iran.

We count ourselves blessed by God to have parents who are faithful to each other and to their children and friends. They love each other dearly and do everything together. Thank you to my mom and pop for being such a wonderful example to us!

Blue Monday ~ Wonderful Weekend!

Welcome to Blue Monday hosted by Smiling Sally. Thank you Sally for hosting this event even in the midst of your move!!

What a whirlwind weekend we’ve had. Our son flew down from Seattle for the Seattle Sounders game against Chivas the first place Los Angeles team. Even though our team dominated the game we could not get the ball into the net and Chivas beat us 1 – 0!  Six of our family members met up with us at the Home Depot Center in Carson for the game. Fun times.

On Sunday my family and Dear’s brother and sister met for a Middle Eastern Potluck at my sister’s house. I’m always so happy when my kids can spend some time with family especially their grandparents! My dad fell last week and broke a bone in his hand and had to have stitches. He is so funny he said “I can fly real good but I’m not so good on the landing”. Pretty funny for a Russian in broken English!

The cousins that got together at the potluck. We do not take for granted the amazing blessing we have and the love we share with our extended family. What fun the cousins had together and what joy we have whenever we can be with eachother.

I love this photo! This was the reaction from my sister Kathy showing one of the vegetables she grew in her garden! This is my niece Michelle, our son Josh, and niece Jessica!

My sister and her girls and grandson Jackson. What a photogenic bunch they are!!

Dear’s brother and SIL were able to be at our gathering, too. What a joy to have all of our extended family on my and Dear’s side enjoying eachother. We really do know this is a special gift from our God!

My parents escaped from Russia into Iran when they were both young so they learned to enjoy and prepare Middle Eastern Food with an Iranian influence. Our potluck was a combination of yummy seasoned lamb and chicken, Hummus and Pita bread, Tabbouleh, cheese, rice, and cucumber and tomato salad. I didn’t photograph the wonderful desserts but we had strawberry shortcake, chocolate cheesecake, and fresh fruit!

Happy Blue Monday everyone. I’ll be working on recovering from a nonstop weekend!!

And the Fun Begins…

The fun has just begun! This will be a week of festivities that I’m sure will prove to me that I’m not getting any younger! Warning: This post is going to to be packed full with photo collages. Get your scroll fingers ready!

My kids sent me this lovely bouquet of flowers for Mother’s Day. I also received a phone call from each of them which always makes my day! After church on Mother’s Day we headed to Whittier for lunch at my sister Kathy’s house. We managed to have 6 of us siblings, our parents, 4 nieces, 3 nephews, 3 SIL’s, 3 BIL’s, and our grandnephew all together.

My parents were thrilled when Miss Hope arrived. She lives in Dallas and we don’t see her as often as we’d like.

Miss Hope’s parents were there, too! Isn’t it funny how the youngest one always seems to steal the show? I mean Hope not my brother Leonard, although…come to think of it, he’s the youngest sibling and he steals the show, too!!

Before we head into Hope overload here are a few shots of some other family members :0). My sister Kathy, my brother Tim and Dear, my brother Leonard and Mandy, my sil Letty, and nieces Melissa and Debbee.

My dad followed Hope around till he ran out of energy.

Hope enjoyed following our Grand nephew Jackson around.

Hope sat still for about 20 seconds while she opened this gift from Baba and Deda. Then she was off …

…. to do some shopping…

It was warm on Sunday and what a treat these homemade tangerine popsicles were! My sister and BIL Len have a tangerine tree in their backyard.

We are trying to see as much of Leonard, Mandy and Hope as we can while they are in Southern California. Tuesday we are celebrating our niece Debbee’s birthday in Laguna Beach and then on Wednesday some of us are headed to Disneyland. If I’m absent from Blog Land you’ll know why..

Antique Easter Postcards ~

Greetings from the beautiful wet Puget Sound Area of Washington!!

I wanted to share these Antique Easter postcards that Dear’s Great, great, Aunt Emma received in the early 1900’s.

And then here’s a classic Easter shot from the 50’s of my sisters and me!

Vera, Kathy and Ellen b. We always got dressed up for Easter with a new Easter dress that my mom would usually sew for us. White patent leather shoes and white socks and a cute little purse finished off the outfit.

I took a stroll around the yard yesterday and I was so happy to see my Lenten Rose in full bloom for Easter.

Lana G! and I worked hard yesterday baking Kulich, (Russian Easter Bread), for the first time all by ourselves. In the past we’ve always watched my mom make it or were part of a group effort in making it. We had many questions in our heads yesterday wondering about the instructions and if we were doing things correctly. We were exhausted by the end of the baking process! Lana re-wrote the recipe and instructions so that someone who has never seen the process would understand what to do better…

My mother wants us to bring her back a piece so she can see how we did. Oh the pressure!!

Today we will decorate the tops of the Kulich with some frosting and sprinkles, color eggs and shop for our portion of the Easter dinner tomorrow.

The most exciting thing that is happening today, though, is that my son Josh is taking me to the Seattle Sounders Game tonight!! That’s MLS soccer for those of you who don’t follow soccer. My son Dan is giving up his season ticket and his scarf for me tonight! Whoohoo! Of course you’ll see and hear more about it later…

Tomorrow we’ll be celebrating with millions of people all around the world that Jesus Christ came to earth, lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and was resurrected from the dead with the power to save anyone who believes in Him. Now that is something to celebrate everyday! Blessings on you and yours!
