We are back on track for Wednesday Hodgepodge thanks to Jo From This Side of the Pond.
1. August is National Back To School Month…how does that make you feel?
I’m pretty stuck in the tradition of school starting after Labor Day so I’m always surprised when we get the photos of our nieces and nephews starting school in August. Above is a photo of me in front of my high school that always started back to school after Labor Day.
Share a back-to-school memory.
Our sons on the first day of school in 1986 or 1987, ready to walk to school. Our daughter waiting for the bus in 1991ish.
This memory of our daughter always sticks in my mind because she chose to wear that t-shirt on the first day of school a few years in a row. I was and am impressed with her boldness and resolve. This photo is from the first day of her senior year, 2003.
2. Something you’ve learned in ‘the school of life’?
That God is in control and I am not.
Contentment is worth more than riches.
Here’s a quote from our sermon on Sunday. “If we displease God does it matter whom we please? If we please Him does it matter whom we displease? ~Leonard Ravenhill
3. Three words to describe your current mood.
Under the weather…
4. A summer food you’ve eaten too much of/are tired of?
Nada, Zip, nothing.
A summer food you haven’t had enough of?
Nectarines and watermelon.
5. What small stuff do you sweat that you know you shouldn’t?
When planning a meal or event I always wonder if I ordered or made enough of this or that. It seems to always work out so I’m trying not to sweat over those things.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
Speaking of Leonard Ravenhill here is another gem I’ll quote from him.
“A man who is intimate with God is not intimidated by men.”
Hello,
My great niece and nephew have started back to school already. I remember always starting back to school after Labor Day. We have not had many watermelons, but all the summer fruits have been delicious. I’d love some more corn on the cob. Take care, enjoy your day!
…school starts here after Labor Day.
Yes, we never started school before Labor Day and I think that is still the way it should be. For one thing, it is much too hot in early to mid August for those children. Love the two Ravenhill quotes, and what a lovely and courageous daughter you have.
In Alabama, school starts in early August. I have not had enough summer fruit – watermelons, peaches, canteloupe, honeydew melon – love all of the summer fruit!
Love those quotes by Leonard Ravenhill. My husband was privileged to meet Leonard Ravenhill and spend about 5 minutes with him one on one. Their church was hosting a prayer conference and Mr. Ravenhill was invited to be one of the speakers. Hubby was on staff and probably in his mid 20’s and just starting his career in the ministry. I don’t think he’ll ever forget that. In that same conference he also got to meet RT Kendall who was pastor of the Westminster Chapel.
Back to school will forever be after Labor Day in my mind as well!
Everything is bumped ahead in this decade it seems, and the start of school is one of those things. I can understand starting before Labor Day when Labor Day is on the later side, but schools here are into week three. Why? I think so many of the systems have added a long fall break so maybe that makes the difference. Love the quote!!
I always find school starting before Labor Day strange. Kudos to your daughter for her bravery and willingness to stick up for the truth about abortion during her youth! Love the Leonard Ravenhill quotes! Mmm nectarines + watermelon (the first being on my grocery list for this week with the second being very tempting). Have a blessed rest if your week 🙂
Peace,
Aimee
I always went back to school the day after Labor Day.
Kids here go back the day after Labor Day too.
Great quote by Leonard Ravenhill.
Great back to school pictures! Yup, it’s after Labour Day over here. Sorry you are feeling under the weather dear Ellen! Feel better and enjoy the rest of this disappearing summer 2022!! Try not to sweat the small stuff – it’s just stuff! Hugs …
Looking forward to some pics of 2 of my grandsons as they start school this year – but schools in the UK don’t start back until September. Hope you’ll soon be feeling better than under the weather.
Excellent quotes!
What sweet back-to-school photos of your kids, and I love the shirt your daughter chose to wear.
So sorry you’ve been feeling under the weather. I have, too, but I’m on the mend now.
Back to school? That leaves a hodgepodge of feelings. I feel like summer always goes so fast!!
I like those quotes by Leonard R. All about pleasing God, rather than men.
It seems like summer has flown by. I’m sure that’s especially true for kids who are back in school.
Leonard Ravenhill is my favorite preacher.
