Driving back from Chewelah on Sunday we noticed a moose on the side of the highway. We turned around and hurried back to get another look.
We spooked it and it started running away.
Thankfully it stopped to take a look at us!
Our son thinks this was a young one!
On Saturday we spotted this critter on our back slope. We think it is a fox but it could be a coyote.
It’s coloring makes us think more fox than coyote.
This was the first moose we have seen since moving to Colville in 2018. Whether the other animal is a fox or a coyote it is a first sighting on our property of either!
Our yards are still covered with snow here and we have temperatures below freezing so not much melting happening.
Here we are on the last day of January. Is it just me or did January fly by?
I remember the first time I saw a moose, in Canada many years ago. What a strange creature!
Barbara, I agree that they have an odd look about them.
I love the moose, great sighting. The other critter look like a coyote to me. Have a great day and a happy new week!!
Eileen, it probably is a coyote. š
Yes, January did fly by! The moose sighting is great! I’m so glad you turned around to take another look and share it with us.
…a moose is something that I’ve never seen! Wonderful pictures.
Hi Ellen~
What great sightings! Well done to see the moose and turn around for a closer look. I don’t know what the other critter is, but he doesn’t look much like a fox to me. They have such distinctive pointed faces.
Whatever the snow situation is there, I know it will be long gone before mine is.
No, January did not fly by for me, but thankfully, it is gone now. It’s been long and harsh. The cold was positively brutal.
Keep having fun!

Vee, I was thinking about you when this latest nor’easter flew in! Happy for you that January is over…
Ellen, your property is amazing. It reminds me of when I lived in Estes Park, CO. We had elk, deer, coyotes and other animals visit all the time. Never a moose, though. However, we did frequently see moose around the Grand Lake area. They’re amazing to see with their long skinny legs and big bodies. And those antlers! Do you know that a pair of antlers can weigh over 40 lbs? How cool would it be to find a shed moose antler? I agree with Eileen, that looks like a coyote to me. Have a great week! xx
Nancy, You’ve lived in some great areas. That’s incredible about the antlers! Thank you for coming by today.
I love seeing animals “in the wild.” That is so cool that you saw a moose! January cannot be over after today – it has flown for me, too
Lisa, we were excited to see the moose. I’m still holding out to see an owl in the wild!
How cool to see the moose – I’ve never seen one.
The other animal looked more like a coyote to me. I’ve seen them around here.
The month flew by for me too.
So very cool to see a moose! I have never seen a live moose, but we have seen a taxidermied moose at the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History and I was stunned at its size. It was much bigger than I had imagined! Great sighting!
I think I am voting “coyote” too. Its legs look longer than a fox’s.
It was a lot of fun seeing that young moose! Yes, we are thinking it was a fluffier than usual coyote.
