Midsomer Murders…

We have gotten to the letter M with ABC Wednesday with thanks to Denise Nesbitt and the ABC Team.

While we were in Henley-on-Thames in England we enjoyed a visit to The Argyle where some of the scenes from the popular BBC murder series was filmed. DCI Tom Barnaby and his young sergeants are fun to follow around the English countryside and in many English pubs.

road to Henly day11 029Do you watch any of the BBC Murder Mysteries? We enjoy Inspector Morse, Inspector Lewis and Midsomer Murders. I was happy to see Season 7 of Inspector Lewis start up on Masterpiece Mysteries on Sunday night here in the states.

  1. What fun! My first thought upon seeing your photos – “What gorgeous petunias The Argyll has on the front of their building!” I’m a sucker for a colorful petunia.

  2. Just watched the season opener yesterday and really enjoyed it! Once again, great pictures Ellen. You and Greg really maximized your visit to England by knowing what you wanted to see before you left.

  3. What a charming pub, Ellen!! I just love the English pub signs, don’t you? One of my many favorite things there. I do like the English murder mysteries. We used to watch Inspector Morse years ago, and I read the books as well. About a year ago, we were able to watch the Inspector Lynley series from the computer — I had also read those books by Elizabeth George. I’ve heard of the Midsomer Murders but haven’t seen them. I hope I can before too long. 🙂

As usual, I love your pictures — thanks for sharing! Have a great week!

    Hugs,

    Denise

  4. Yes I’d have had to try the Midsummer Murder beer too, nice pub. Do you ever wonder how big Midsummer must be? There seems always to be a murder somewhere different each time I watch it, which tends to be intermittently, I like a bit of cosy crime.

  5. Love Midsomer Murders! We got hooked on the series years ago. We have copies of quite a few of the episodes and when there is absolutely nothing worth watching on TV, we watch an old one. The characters, the scenery, the camaraderie between Tom Barnaby and his various sergeants always amuse us. We like the new ones too, with John Barnaby — Neil Dugeon is a worthy successor to John Nettles. I hope the series runs forever — but sadly, it probably won’t. xoxox

  6. Wonderful to see the Midsomer Murders places! Yes I always watch British Thrillers and detective series like “A Touch of Frost”, Dalziel and Pascoe, Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Prime Suspect, Inspector Morse, Lewis, Endeavour, Banks, Murder in Paradise, Quirk, Poirot, Miss Marple….Well there are so many and all of them different, Thanks for this post!

  7. Yes, I watch the Masterpiece Mystery series with whomever is playing. I recently started with Netflix for Midsomer Murders and I was surprised that they have 14 seasons. I didn’t realize it has been going on so long. So I started with Season 1, Episode 1 and have made it up to Season 8 I think. It has been fun to watch Cally grow up in the series. I love the English villages; I have ever since I started with Agatha Christie as a teenager. I am also getting caught up with all the seasons of Inspector Morse now through Netflix–it’s great, and no commercials!

Thanks for your hello on my Oregon blog–I think we both love to travel and enjoy the world.

  8. Ellen which guide(s) did you use to plan this trip? I noticed during my trips to the UK I wanted to visit good pubs and too often ducked into one only to find that the really neat one was the next street over.

    • Oh dear, I never saw this question. I didn’t use any guides per sea on this trip. Because we have enjoyed Midsomer Murders I googled that and found a Midsomer driving tour with the pubs included. We also have found several good blogs about walking about Oxford and enjoying good pubs there….

  9. Fab pics of the Pub…Aye you can’t beat good old English Pubs, nothing in the world like them, I am a bit squeamish so don’t like blood thirsty scenes, I didn’t like Morse I found him rather depressing, I always thought he’d have a sad ending and so he did ! Must admit I rather like Lewis.
I loved John Nettles in Midsomer, he was very handsome when he was younger but sadly, age caught up with him, as it does with most!
Interesting post I enjoyed it immensely, thank you,
    Di x

  10. Nothing beats British drama. We watch Midsomer Murders and a lot of other shows from the UK. They are so well done. And the pub scenes are iconic. How fun for you to go to this one.

  11. We’ve watched several episodes of Midsomer Murders. It does make one wonder if it’s safe to travel to England. LOL Every week someone is getting murdered in that village! 🙂 But we do like Barnaby, and there are so many seasons!
