Hot, Hot, Hot!

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn’t it a pity
Doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head…

At 6:00 am it was already in the 70’s according to my outdoor thermometer. Boy is it ugly…I’m going to have to keep my eye out at Goodwill and see if I can pick up a thermometer that’s a little more trendy and not a throwback from the 70’s!! But back to my other woes. Besides the heat, Verizon is putting Fios in our neighborhood, so all this heavy noisy equipment is right on or next to my yard. The guys start before 8:00 am and the equipment is so loud they converse by yelling. Because of the heat every window in my house is open so there is no getting away from the noise.

I have no other choice friends besides sitting in a cool bathtub with ear plugs in, so I’m going shopping and eating at the air-conditioned mall. I figure I can pace myself and I’ve come up with an old song with new lyrics…

“Shop a little, eat a little, shop a little, eat a little, shop shop shop eat a lot eat a little, little” Can anyone recognize that song?

I’ll give you a big hint “Pick a little, talk a little” (from The Music Man)…

I know my friends in Clovis, Sacramento, Arizona, Southern California, and Texas put up with this kind of heat a lot but it’s just out of place in Western Washington and a LOT of us do not have air conditioning…

Hope you stay cool wherever you are today!

  1. When I glanced down at that thermometer, I though, Pshaw. Seventy? But at 6am, that’s pretty warm! The song is a Second Chapter of Acts song about gossipping, I think.

  2. Hi Ellen…..I’m suffering with you!! I’ve lost two pounds this week….food does not sit well in the hot weather!! Have fun at the mall and keep singing that song!! You have made some changes to your web site…very nice. The pictures are larger at this end.
    Cute birds!!

  3. I saw that many of the libraries and senior centers are open later and to everyone…..
my husband’s office IS not a/c’d—he comes home wiped out…
I am not a summer girl, even as a teenager in Southern Calif.–having a huge built in pool…..that is what I LOVE about Washington…coooool…most of the time..over 75 and I wilt…and can get grumpy….
Hoping you are finding your COOOOL spots..here and there.

  4. Open all the windows early in the morning, then close everything up when it starts to heat up. Close your curtains and drapes, and close the door to rooms that face the sun. I sometimes place a cool washcloth on my dirty, gritty neck. Fans help – good luck Ellen!

  5. Head for the mountains and streambanks with a good book! That what we did…

And please don’t send the heat on to us here in SLC! It has finally cooled down a bit.
(I read we’ll be getting your heat this weekend. Thanks a bunch! Bleh!)

  6. Thank God for air conditioning! We’re grateful to be ‘only’ in the 90’s today…btw, I have that same thermometer on my back porch. Are you saying it’s out of date?! I’m shocked…. 🙂

  7. Hello Ellen B.,

I’m in the lovely air-conditioning at work and I have my own thermostat in my own room. It’s a pleasant 70 degrees right now and I have my Aunt Carmine’s crocheted shawl over my shoulders…ah! Cool air!!! I hope you get some cool soon, but if it makes you feel any better, when I woke up this morning at 6:30 it was 79 degrees in my little cottage…YUCK!!!!

    xoxo Cori G.

  8. Oh the heat! Good idea to go to the air conditioned mall and shop and eat and eat and shop! I heard about it from my sister too….99 degrees in the evening and no air conditioning. Hope for your sake it tones down to something more bearable very soon.

You could always come back to SoCal until it’s over!! LOL.

  9. PS: I also meant to say thank you for the “hot town” lyrics. That brought back such memories of my distant youth….I love that song!
