Mary at Work of the Poet challenged us to come up with a Ruby post using signs this week. Here is what I came up with.
There’s a little ruby mixed with the Orange in this fun sign I saw outside an Irish Pub in the North Beach Area of San Francisco in early December.
We spotted this sign in downtown Seattle on New Year’s Day. What you have to realize about Seattle and Snow is that there are many, many very steep hills/roads in the Seattle area. These become quite treacherous with snow and ice on them. Snow is not fun to drive around in here.

What a great name for a pub!
And cities in the west don’t salt their roads because it snows so seldom. It’s easier and cheaper to keep the signs from year to year and put them up!
Perhaps after a few hours in The Flying Pig you might need air traffic control to keep all the oinkers you see from colliding…
We live in a hilly area that probably gets more snow than the Emerald City. Yet, hilly, snow and driving is a match made in hades, at least to me. Not any more fun in the Northeast, either!

I visited a neighbor over the holidays. Their daughter’s boyfriend couldn’t get home to Seattle so came to their house instead.
We won’t have the snow closure sign in SG. Hee hee.

That’s such a fun sign for a pub!
Well I wondered what would happen if pigs could fly. Now I know!
We get so little snow here that the city wouldn’t invest in those signs. They do have salt trucks available, but not nearly enough. The expense can’t be justified, so unless you live on one of the major arteries, you cna count on being stuck for a few days if there’s any kind of significant accumulation. Adding insult to injury, the streets that are left until last have had a chance to cycle through the freeze/thaw loop a few times, so by the time they’re eventually plowed the effect is sort of like running a zamboni over an ice rink. they take the sheet of ice and make it nice and smooth so any traction you had where the ice had been roughed up by traffic is now gone.

Cool signs! We live on a very steep hill and there are no signs for warning. It’s amazing how many people try to go up the hill. Crazy!

Love the flying pig sign. That is so cool! We don’t get snow, but roads can get icy at times around here. Today is supposed to be a sunny day!

I have great respect for the snow enclosure signs here in Norway.
Every year some mountain roads are closed for months.
I would not have believed that the city of Seattle did not manage to keep its roads open though.

I love the Pub Sign especially! I confess I dug into my archives to find my favorite sign ever because I didn’t have time to snap new pictures but I did share on Tuesday even though I’m just getting around to visiting this morning. Hopefully life will slow down eventually ;–)
