D is for Downton Abbey for ABC Wednesday this week. Thank you Denise Nesbitt and the ABC team!
The village of Bampton was used for filming outdoor scenes, most notably St. Mary’s Church and the library, which serves as the entrance to the cottage hospital. On our trip to England with our son and daughter in law in September of 2013 we stopped at this Oxfordshire Village.
The village was nice to walk through. It’s been fun to see the places we strolled by and through when we watch Downton.
Just to the right of this photo where you can see the bench is where they erected the War Monument during this season.
My Daughter and I had a marathon day of watching season 5 of Downton Abbey last week and now I don’t have to wait till Sunday nights to see one episode at a time. I was a lot more pleased with the ending of this season. Are you a fan of Downton Abbey?
I am a fan, and I’ve watched the end of this season, too. It was very satisfying. Love seeing the church and the village where parts of the show were filmed.
Don’t tell my wife, but I’m buying her Season 5 on DVD for Valentine’s Day!
What a fabulous trip that must have been. I love Downton Abbey. Big fan but I didn’t start watching until near the end of WWI. Guess I need to do some marathon viewing myself.
I am a huge fan, but haven’t watched season five yet. I’m waiting for it to be available on amazon prime so I can watch when I have time.
I love to watch Downton, how wonderful to visit the places where some of the filming took place .. I recognize the locations from your photos.
You’re one lucky person. I’ve enjoyed watching Downton Abbey and am a huge fan. I love Maggie Smith and her dry humour. Enjoyed the pictures here.
Wonderful snapshots of the church and village.
I love Downton and just want it to go on for ever and ever.
Best wishes,
Di.
ABCW team.
How cool …I’ve not seen even one of Downton episodes…I know I am bound to be missing out.
Yes, I love watching Downton Abbey and how great that you were able to visit Brampton and see the village setting. I am a Sunday night watcher, but will go and see where the whole season is available.
I certainly am a fan. We just finished the last series and we hope there will be a new series, for I’d like to know if Mary marries again and if Anna and Bates will become free from accusations and happy again.
You see I am a romantic!
Wil, ABCW Team.
What fun and your photos are wonderful!
oh, you lucky duck, having been where so much of the program is filmed! I watch each Sunday evening. I’m ready for a certain person who’s looking quite ill to quit trying to make other people’s lives miserable.
What fun to recognize things that you have actually seen when watching Downton!
I watched the previous season of Downton Abbey too. And tese picturesis so pretty!
Oh Ellen – we love Downton Abbey and I just purchased the Season 5 DVDs (as we can’t pull in the channel that airs it here). Can’t wait to start watching it! So amazing that you visited the area where some of these episodes were filmed!
Oh how exciting that trip must have been, especially if you’re a die-hard fan of the series.

Yes, we love watching Downton Abbey! Every Sunday evening we get together with our bro and SIL and have an English supper or “tea” before seeing the week’s installment. We have had roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, a proper English tea with scones, baked cakes and sandwiches, etc. I envy you for seeing that church and village.
Millie, now you have me hankering for some nice scones. My daughter and I had a pot of tea during our marathon…I should have made scones to go with! 🙂
Ellen, I so enjoy it as well. It’s good to hear that it ends more positively this season. I’ve been worried about the whole Banks situation. It never seems to go away.
A group of us had a proper Downton dinner on opening night. Brought out all the silver, china and crystal. My husband printed up the individual menus and place cards. We had 5 courses that the others helped to bring together. What fun it was. Irene k
Irene, that dinner sounds like so much fun. What a great way to open up the new season!
O this is lovely! Thanks for sharing about Bampton or else I wouldn’t know. Something like Lacock Village where they shot Meryton in Pride and Prejudice (1995) the BBC TV series. I was so excited to visit there, always cool to see actual sites where movies are shot.
wonderful pictures Ellen, i would love to walk through there with my camera ofcourse 😉
Wonderful structure of the church. The work on the glass pane is great.
So beautiful, love the door! Something magical about visiting a place you love to watch on the tele. Thanks for sharing your trip.
How wonderful. Thanks for sharing, I had never really thought about where it was filmed.
I am not at all as excited about the show this year and now I am wondering if it is because I have not been able to watch through all the shows in advance. Have read all spoilers, but that is not the same. Glad for a “satisfying” end.
That is a pretty church. I’m not a Downton watcher although I did see the first two series.
I have never watched it. I would love to but my husband isn’t a fan of period dramas, that doesn’t mean I don’t watch them, I do, i just missed this one. I intend to buy the set though.
Diana
I love Dame Maggie anywhere, anytime.
What fun! Great photos! I have only seen the first two episodes but it looked really good. Guess I’ll have to get back to it!
