O Beautiful…

for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain;

For purple mountains majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America!

God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood,

We did not see any seas but the mighty Columbia River that begins in the Canadian Rockies and flows through the state of Washington empties into the Pacific Ocean between Oregon and Washington…

These are some of the views we saw on our road trip to Eastern Washington to visit our son, Dan. We are home now and I wanted to post something from our trip. Our company survived nicely without us. Don’t know what the plans are for today except for what we are having for dinner. Summer has arrived on this side of the mountains, too, so our guests are finally warming up. Hope all is well with you and yours today…

Random Captures…

I’m getting a few posts ready filled with random shots I haven’t shared. Dear’s on vacation and we are doing random things. I’m going to schedule posts through Wednesday. When we get back from a little road trip East to visit our second born I hope to share some new shots…

While we are gone and when we get back we have a house full of guests from Southern California. My niece’s family along with my sister Kathy are road tripping up for the week.

I’m happy to have a house full of people to use as guinea goats guinea pigs for some recipes I wanted to try. That way Dear and I don’t have to eat the whole enchilada ourselves.

A Little Drive…

…to 3 Little Towns.

On Saturday morning of Memorial Weekend Dear was inspired to take a drive just across the Cascades to visit Cle Elum, Roslyn, and Ronald.

We left early in the morning and our first stop was for breakfast in Cle Elum.

Friendly people and good food if you need someplace to eat on your way across the Cascades we recommend this cafe. They have “acres” of parking…that cracked me up but I suppose if you are traveling in R.V.’s and pulling trailers filled with bikes and camping gear this is the place for you!

We got some great inside information from the family sitting next to us on visiting Roslyn and Ronald. After breakfast in Cle Elum and a stop at the small town hardware store we headed West to Roslyn.

Incorporated in 1886 the coal-mining town of Roslyn played an important role in Washington State History. The extensive coal fields in the area fueled the Northern Pacific Railroad’s trains during construction and early operation of a direct rail line through the Cascade Mountains.

Roslyn also claimed fame because of the T.V. series Northern Exposure. It was called Cicely on the show and suppose to be in Alaska but the filming was done on the streets of Roslyn, Washington.

The Brick is Washington’s oldest continuously operating bar established in 1889. They are also known for Northern Exposure being filmed there and a movie called The Runner Stumbles with Dick Van Dyke. The Runner Stumbles was also filmed at the Immaculate Conception Church in Roslyn shown below.

We were too early for most shops to be open but we weren’t too early to hit some garage sales. We found some real good bargains in Roslyn. Items priced at 10 cents and 50 cents. Woohoo that’s what I’m talking about…

We always are able to find some great yard art in these little towns we visit.

Our last little town was Ronald and this is a photo of the General Store. There wasn’t much else in this town but we found this stellar example of yard art!

We headed home from this little town and made it back in time to mow and weed whack the yard.

Mosaic Monday ~ Saturday Road Trip

Dear wanted to head down to Lacey, Washington because that’s where Cabela’s is and I went along for the ride with an understanding that a little side trip would be acceptable, too. We got to the Cabela’s parking lot right before 8 A.M. and people were already coming out the doors with their brand new digital food dehydrators. I took an unscientific look see poll and saw that the dehydrators were definitely the hot ticket item of the morning!

While I was counting dehydrators for my unscientific poll I also got to see animals from Africa, North America including Alaska! That Steller Sea Lion was from the Smithsonian of all places. They even had an huge aquarium filled with some great looking fish. Dear was off looking at guns and ammo and other fun stuff like that.

We finished up our time at Cabela’s with our appetites ready for a nice breakfast. Doing some research on the computer before we left home I came across a restaurant in Olympia called Sage Brunch House. We trusted the computers directions and headed south of Lacey to Olympia to try and find the restaurant. After a few wrong ways we managed to put two and two together and found this little out of the way spot in West Olympia.

I think the chef was related to Julia Child because she was not shy with butter! The food was really tasty and that Blueberry Walnut pancake with real maple syrup was amazing!

The real reason we ended up in Olympia was to see this…

Our Washington State Capitol. This was the first time Dear and I had ever been to our state capitol. I’ll show more pictures of our stop here later in the week. I hope you noticed that we had some fine weather for our little road trip.

Photobucket replaced all my photos with ugly black and grey boxes and they are holding my photos hostage until I pay them lots of money. I’m slowly going through all my posts and trying to clean them up and replacing some photos. Such a bother.
