M is for Mt. Vernon…

“Mount Vernon sits at the center of Skagit County, a true slice of Pacific Northwest heaven located halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, BC. About 25 miles wide and 95 miles long, some of Washington’s most scenic and pristine landscape is found in the Upper Skagit’s North Cascades National Park. From there the land flows like the Skagit River through nutrient-rich farmland to the shores of the Salish Sea.”

In April people from around the world descend on Mount Vernon and the Skagit Valley for it’s annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Here are some photos to show you why. My daughter Katie and I headed north form our house to see the blooms on Monday. We enjoyed a wonderful 70 degree day and got a little sunburned as we tiptoed through the tulips!

Blue Monday ~Totem Poles

It’s hard to believe that just a week ago the skies were so clear and blue. We are in a overcast, gray, and wet pattern right now.

 

We have the opportunity to see many Totem Poles in the Pacific Northwest because of our Northwest Coast Native populations. They are carved from large trees, generally from Western Red Cedar. These Totem Poles are featured at the Evergreen Fair Grounds in Monroe, Washington. If you are interested in reading about the different types of  Totem Poles google it and enjoy the history…

 

Have you ever used the expression low man on the totem pole? Usually the expression means someone who is the lowest ranking in a group or organization. The thing I learned today in reading some history about Totem Poles is that the order of the faces carved on a totem pole have no universal significance.

Yard Art ~ Bears!

Do you see interesting things in yards when you drive around in your neck of the woods? Visit Mary at Work of the Poet to see some fun and unusual examples.

It was a wet and drizzly day and I had to take some mail to the post office. On my way back I took the scenic route over Norway Hill and had to roll the window down in my car and take these shots. I think that the size of this yard and the location really does lend itself to this type of yard art.
