At Home

I’m starting to get things ready for the 4th of July. With the 4th landing on a Tuesday this year I’m not sure what we will do or who we might have over. We are having out of town guests the middle of July and I’ll just keep the red, white and blue theme going.

The white hydrangeas are well ahead of the the other ones in the yard. I still need to fill a hanging basket with some flowers. I’m on the lookout for a nice Fuchsia. Our northern neighbors are getting ready for Canada Day. Do you decorate for the 4th or for Canada Day?

We ended the year with a nice chilly walk and then a Raclette dinner at this old house with dear old friends. Sad to say I forgot to take a photo! Here’s the table set in Husky gold and purple even though our dear Huskies lost to the Crimson Tide after a great run in 2016!

pictures67Today on New Year’s day we managed to put away Christmas decorations and drag the tree out to the yard waste bin. Woohoo! Tomorrow I will enjoy sitting and watching the Rose Bowl Parade and maybe the Rose Bowl game.

Hope that 2017 is having a good start at your house!

Meanwhile…

…back at the ranch this old house. For Friday’s Fave Five and Five on Friday I’m sharing the following collages and photos of what’s been happening around home.

2016-07-07 4th and beyond1

Steve and Lana, Bob and Jan, Andrew and Katie, Matteo and Sandy. Friends and family gathered for our Fourth of July celebration. I took photos of the couples but missed getting Paul and Monica together but I do have one of Paul and Dear.

4th and beyond 006

Dear smoked a couple of Pork Butts and we enjoyed pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, beans, corn on the cob, and salad. We had hot artichoke dip and onion dip for appetizers.

2016-07-07 4th and beyond

Our neighbor Sandy brought cupcakes and my sister Lana brought trifle for dessert.

Even though all of the couples did not know each other everyone enjoyed conversation and getting to know someone new. It was good to find out more about our neighbors.

2016-06-18 yard-flowers

Lots of purple blooming about the yard. One of our hydrangeas is an intense purple and the other is a cross between purple and blue.

Not everything is purple. Our Fuschia continues to charm us.

Our apples and pears are going to be ready sooner this year than last.

Our latest yard project is digging out the grass area in front that is encroaching on the drive and making the yard area more defined. We are adding a crushed base so the drive doesn’t get muddy from the rains. When we win the lotto we’ll have a cement driveway poured.

I’m thankful for family, friends, freedom, flowers, fruit trees and still being able to do some hard work. Don’t know if we’ll be able to move without moaning tomorrow but we are happy with our work progress.

Thank you Amy and Susanne for hosting these weekly Friday memes.

UPDATE: Our hearts and minds are with the families of the police officers killed in Dallas last night. Here are a few thoughts from a pastor in Dallas…

A Few Thoughts Regarding The July 7th, 2016 Dallas Shootings

Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.  Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Hooray for the Red, White and Blue!

We’re getting ready at this old house for the 4th of July.

Now all we need are our guests and the food. Maybe I should do a little dusting, too.

2016-07-03 the fourth of July

In the midst of all the getting ready our kids are moving out of our basement to their new apartment. We moved some major items today so they’ll now be using one of our guestrooms until they move everything to their new location. Although tiny their new flat has a wonderful view of the tops of trees and sky. This new location is just 3 miles from the University which will be nice for our son-in-law’s commute. I think they’ll be happy to be on an upper floor instead of the basement.

We’re hoping the sun makes an appearance in time for our gathering. We’re having pulled pork sandwiches with salads, beans, corn on the cob, and other goodies. My sister is bringing the dessert. Are you celebrating or laying low?

On Monday head over to the Mennonite Girls Can Cook Blog to see my Strawberry Pudding Cake.

Have a wonderful 4th of July everyone!

We broke the 4th of July heat record here in the Seattle area…92. Too hot to do much of anything but hydrate! Our town does not allow fireworks so our guests moved over to my sister’s house across the way from us when darkness approached. Her house happens to be in a city that does allow personal fireworks.

We’re getting ready to watch the Women’s World Cup Final Game now…go U.S.A.!

How was your weekend?

Happy 4th of July America!

We are having a heat wave here in the Seattle area and were so blessed to be invited to dear friends with a pool this past week. I thought this would help make it feel cool for our celebrations. I will show all my decorations for the 4th next week!

Happy 4th of July to all our friends and family in the U.S.A.

Before I take you on a walk about the yard I wanted to wish everyone in the good ole U.S.A. a very Happy Independence Day.

July yard 021We landed in the country we gained independence from on the 4th of July!

Because of my early Thursday morning walk about I found myself another job to do and another request to make of our house guests before we left the country.

The Calm Before…

God Bless America

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,

Let us swear allegiance to the land that’s free,

Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,

As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

God Bless America

Land that I love.

Stand beside her, and guide her

Through the night with the light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies

To the oceans, white with foam.

God bless America, My own sweet home

God bless America, My own sweet home.

God bless America and God bless all who visit here!
