The Fourth at This Old House!

The food that my brother Leonard reminded me to take a photo of, steak, corn on the cob, pasta salad and veggie salad.

Trifle for dessert with red, white and blue highlights!

Katie and Andrew…

Katie, Andrew, Hope and little Andrew!

Hope and Andrew’s parents! They live in Texas.

My brother Steve and Dear. Steve and Kelly live in Southern California.

We broke the 4th of July heat record here in the Seattle area…92. Too hot to do much of anything but hydrate! Our town does not allow fireworks so our guests moved over to my sister’s house across the way from us when darkness approached. Her house happens to be in a city that does allow personal fireworks.

We’re getting ready to watch the Women’s World Cup Final Game now…go U.S.A.!

How was your weekend?

Happy 4th of July America!

We are having a heat wave here in the Seattle area and were so blessed to be invited to dear friends with a pool this past week. I thought this would help make it feel cool for our celebrations. I will show all my decorations for the 4th next week!

Happy 4th of July to all our friends and family in the U.S.A.

Have a safe and sane weekend!

Happy 4th of July!

Before I take you on a walk about the yard I wanted to wish everyone in the good ole U.S.A. a very Happy Independence Day.

July yard 021We landed in the country we gained independence from on the 4th of July!

Because of my early Thursday morning walk about I found myself another job to do and another request to make of our house guests before we left the country.

July yard 016Many of the blueberries are ready for picking. This will be a nice fresh treat for the guests!

July yard 017I love the hydrangeas at this stage of coloring.

2014-07-03 July yardWe also have white ones and a small potted pink one this year.

July yard 013The lavender has made it’s debut, too.

July yard 020

July yard 005I’ll leave a note for our guests to feel free to snip the fresh thyme for their meals.

July yard 014The apples won’t be ready until we return home.

So how’s your garden/yard growing?

The Calm Before…

…the Fireworks! Was it just me or did you feel like the fireworks were more plentiful and louder this year ? Here’s what our calm and quiet fourth looked like at this old house…

It’s good to keep the celebrations going all year long.

Fourth of July Decorations3After a few days of hot hot weather here in the Seattle area the fourth was overcast and cool. We were hoping that the sun would break through the clouds before our 4:00 P.M. party time and it did.

Fourth FestivitiesFourth of July 2013 we had the traditional eight to celebrate.

Fourth Festivities1The signature drink for 2013 was shaken up by Dear and enjoyed. Steve and Lana brought a new red for the wine drinkers to enjoy.

Fourth Festivities2Dear smoked pork for pulled pork sandwiches and our guests all brought sides to share.

Fourth Festivities3My contribution was a trifle with strawberries and blueberries. We really do love our red, white, and blue!

How did you celebrate the “Fourth” this year or do you have some summer celebrations you are looking forward to?

And for the record…I was in bed when the fireworks were in full force loudness.

Happy Fourth of July!

My decorations are going up today and the smoker is already cooking away.

If you head over to Mennonite Girls Can Cook you will see a recipe for easy delicious Pork Loin Ribs slow roasted in the oven.

God Bless America

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,

Let us swear allegiance to the land that’s free,

Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,

As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

God Bless America

Land that I love.

Stand beside her, and guide her

Through the night with the light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies

To the oceans, white with foam.

God bless America, My own sweet home

God bless America, My own sweet home.

God bless America and God bless all who visit here!

Summer in the City

…or summer in the burbs.

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty

Been down, isn’t it a pity
Doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

We finally put our patio covers up on the last day of June. That’s pretty late for us but very timely with the heat wave that has been hitting us here in the Northwest. I took these photos in the morning so things are still cooler and pleasant.

We are going to have a few friends over on the 4th of July so it was time to get the deck ready for our celebration. While it was still in the 80’s instead of 90’s I walked about the yard to take some photos of the progress on our fruit trees and bushes.

summer yard 005Apples are moving along nicely along with our bumper crop of pears!

You know you can invite friends over with all your floors torn up and they won’t mind? It will be a memorable 4th of July celebration here. We can call it “4th of July in the rough” or “4th of July before the floors”. Besides the good food we will share together we’ll mix up a pitcher of a very relaxing beverage just in case someone stubs their toes on our rough floors!

The Sun Did Shine!

The sun came out, the flags came out, our friends came out, the food came out and we enjoyed a grand 4th of July!

I didn’t take photos of all the food. We had smoked brisket that Dear prepared, cole slaw, a loaded salad, eggplant parmesan, and desserts.

It’s hard to believe Dear has to go to work today. I’ll be off kilter the rest of the week with this Independence Day landing on a Wednesday this year.

We have a forecast of summer here in the Northwest finally. Hope all is well where you live…
