A Seasoned Hodgepodge

I’m adding some blooms to sweeten things up.

Welcome back to another Wednesday Hodgepodge hosted by Jo From This Side of the Pond.

1. June 10th is National Herbs and Spices Day. Besides salt and pepper what herb or spice container do you reach for most often?

We like Lawry’s Seasoned salt.

Is there a spice you truly dislike? No

What’s a recent dish you made that called for more than salt and pepper?

Chili calls for chili powder and cumin and we use those spices often.

2.  It’s been said ‘variety is the spice of life’…in what way is this true for you? Elaborate.

I enjoy variety but there is a lot to say for the good ole familiar and a regular schedule, too.

3. What’s something in your life that adds ‘spice’ (excitement, intensity) even if also comes with challenge or unpredictability?

Traveling adds lots of spice.

Grandchildren have added so much spice to our lives. It’s a joy to be able to see them at each new stage of life. It’s a challenge to keep up the older we get.

Some of the spice we enjoy right now is watching Addy with her Irish dance troupe.

And we love to see JJ with his new skills at Taekwondo.

4. If you could instantly master one skill or hobby, what would it be and why?

It would be amazing to be able to master playing piano with the ability to read music instantly.

5. We’re halfway through the year…what’s one book, movie, or activity you’ve loved this year that you’d recommend to others?

We’ve enjoyed some series on Britbox and Acorn like Ludwig, Death Valley, Harry Wild, Mr. & Mrs. Murder, The Brokenwood Mysteries and our fallback, Midsomer Murders.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Right now on our property the white and pink peonies are blooming and I’m having a hard time keeping up with them. It’s a wonderful problem to have.

I love the white but the pink are my favorite.

Hope to get around soon to see your spicy posts!

  1. Oh wow, the peonies would be a good problem to have! I like your succinct answer to number 2. That is exactly how I feel! The Irish dancing pictures are so cute- I saw more that you had in another post but I don’t think I commented. I had a dancer and my son did TKD so I enjoy seeing pictures of those activities! Have a great day!

  2. Oh those peony.. ours are blooming too. They are huge this year. I heard that a cold winter helps with bloom size.. not sure if that is true or not. 😉

We got into watching Ludwig too.

    Have a great week,

    Carla

  3. Ellen, your Peonies are gorgeous…and I enjoyed seeing your “vases” as well. The one in the “Ball” jar at the top, is that a jar you have collected? It’s beautiful and makes a perfect vase. I enjoyed each vase and how it added its own personality to the bouquet.

    • Dianna, the ball jar on the left was a purchase at a store that was going out of business. I liked the unusual shape of it. The jar on the right is from Magnolia in Waco, Texas. It had some delicious ice cold tea and lemonade mix in it. The most expensive ice tea/lemonade I’ve ever had. 🙂

  4. Your peonies are just beautiful! I love them! The Irish dancing looks like a lot of fun too. I’m hoping my granddaughters want to dance. Have a great day!

  5. Oh I really would love to add a peony bush to my yard. I really think they are quickly becoming my favorite flowers! So, so pretty! Looks like your grandchildren are having a great time!!

  6. A neighbor has a peony bush that she brought from her parents’ land many years ago. We all look forward to its lush flowers. It is not a common plant in North Central Texas, but I do love it. I enjoyed seeing all your pictures of your granddaughter dancing. I knew immediately that it was an Irish dance by her positions, and could almost hear the music. How exciting to be part of their activities.

  7. I picked some fresh parsley and dill out of my garden to use for supper just a little while ago.

    The blooms are beautiful.

  8. It’s so true that our grandchildren add spice to our lives! Looking forward to being with some of mine this weekend! Like you, I would love to instantly be able to play the piano.

  9. Beautiful flowers. True, a regular schedule is nice to have. Grandchildren are the best gift from God. Looks like JJ is doing good in Taekwondo. A lot of people mentioned the piano this week. Glad that you have shows you like to watch. Thanks for sharing all of your flowers.

  10. I can’t believe I didn’t list chili as one of the spices I use a lot. I guess I haven’t used it as much recently, but it’s another one that goes in pretty much everything I make with ground beef. Love the photos of your grands and of the peonies! Can you believe I used to dislike peonies when I was a kid? I associated them with ants and couldn’t get past that to appreciate how pretty they are. Now I love them. Hope you’re having a great week, with just the right amount of spice!
