A Bold Hodgepodge

It is time again for Wednesday Hodgepodge. A good distraction this week! Thank you, Jo.

1. What is one good thing you often take for granted?

There are so many good things I take for granted. Electricity is something that comes to mind especially this time of year. At our country bungalow, electricity is the power source for everything including the pump on the well. If it goes out, besides lights and heat and hot water, we don’t have water any running water.

2. What’s the boldest piece of clothing in your wardrobe?

My bold days are long behind me. I had to go look and see what I’d consider the boldest. I’ve got nothing for you unless black is bold!

3. Do you think common interests or common values are the key to people getting along? Elaborate.

Even with common interests or common values people will clash. Those aren’t the key to getting along. Pride and selfishness are strong in our post Adam world. This verse is one that can help me if…I stop and consider it.

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4

That doesn’t mean I’ll condone values that go against the clear teachings of the Bible just for the sake of getting along.

4. November 6 is National Nacho Day…do you like nachos? How do you like yours? Do you make them at home or only order out?

Nachos are not generally on my radar. We never order them at a restaurant. Once in a great while when a snack is on his mind and there is nothing else, Greg will make a quick small plate of them in the microwave.

5. Have you spent any time in Washington D.C.?  If so what did you think? If not, is that a place you’d like to visit? What do you think about politics as a career choice?

I have been to Washington D.C. twice in my life, once when I was in college and then in May of 2011. In the 70’s the average citizen could be trusted to get closer to the building. My best friend, Heidi, and me in the summer of 1971 in the photo above.

This Ecuadorian mother insisted on being in the picture with me far from the Whitehouse in 2011. Her son finally persuaded her to step away so he could snap a solo photo of me, too.

I really enjoyed my visit to D.C. in 2011. There is so much to see and do. The monuments, the museums, the National Cathedral, Arlington National Cemetery. It is rich with history and worthy of a good visit.

Politics as a career choice has made a lot of people rich and unpopular. We still need good people as leaders and I hope we have a pendulum swing from the status quo.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

The Korean War Memorial was one of the most stirring for me. He’s looking right at me…

In this Temple

As in the hearts of the people

For Whom he saved the union

The Memory of Abraham Lincoln

Is Enshrined Forever

On the left is a tucked away staircase in the crypt of the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. On the right is a painting we own that was painted by a friend of ours. We knew she was inspired by this scene and when we visited the cathedral we were on a quest to find it. It was a joy to see the original. It makes us enjoy our painting even more.

Thank you to everyone who visits today.

  1. Enjoyed reading your answers and seeing your pictures, too. Love the photo of you and your best friend near the White House in the 70´s. You are right, you could get a lot closer back then! I live much closer to DC and have never been there- I should change that in the next four years :). I can see why you like the painting your friend did for you and how awesome to find that same spot when you were in DC! Have a great Wednesday!

  2. A visit to D.C. is definitely not what it was a decade ago. We’ve been in the White House, and have had a tour that took us below the House and Senate which was interesting. The world is less safe and I guess I understand the fences, etc but it’s sad. I have a million pictures but didn’t have time to dig them out yesterday. Wonderful story about the painting! Have a nice day!

  3. Hello, thank you for sharing the photos of D.C. Our friend Marv served in Korea. He never went to D.C. to the memorial, even though I wanted to take him. He just could not do it.

I laughed at your answer “my bold days are behind me” cute. I answered my bathrobe. 😉

  4. A good point on what we take for granted. I like your answer for #3. Mark makes a small plate of nacho too in the microwave. How nice that you have been to Washington DC twice. I love all the photos you shared. I really would love to visit DC.

  5. I like your “ black is bold” comment. I’m no longer interested making a fashion statement. These days, I’d rather walk in to a room and not be noticed! My have things changed.
Enjoyed your photos and your well thought out comments!

  6. We visited Washington DC as a family many years ago. The Smithsonian collection of museums was amazing!

We love nachos and it’s often what we’ll put together for a quick supper on a weekend.

  7. Living on the East Coast, we have been to Washington, DC many times! We love the Smithsonian museums . . . National Museum of American History, National Gallery of Art, Natural History Museum, and the Air and Space Museum, to name a few. We also found the Holocaust Museum heart wrenching, but quite meaningful. The National Zoo is fabulous. And then there are the historic sites. So much to see and learn!

Pondering question #1 . . . I am afraid that there is much that I take for granted unless I pause to consider. We are blessed greatly!

  8. I think I take running water and electricity for granted too often. I sure miss it when it doesn’t work!

The Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial were SO moving. Both are must-see in DC in my opinion.

Hope you’re havng a great week!

  9. Wonderful to see these photos Ellen and I thoroughly enjoyed your hodgepodge. All the areas you shared I have visited many times over the years being as close as we are to DC, but not lately and it’s been too long. Washington DC is a city I have enjoyed visiting. Praying for peace in our country and elsewhere.

  10. I would love to visit DC one day! Your pictures are amazing. The Vietnam memorial looks so incredible. I know what you mean about black being bold. I guess it can be? That painting vs. the real place is wonderful! I do hope and pray for peace to prevail in both of our countries and in this world…
