Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
Wean it from earth; through all its pulses move;
Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art;
And make me love Thee as I ought to love.
I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies,
No sudden rending of the veil of clay,
No angel visitant, no opening skies;
But take the dimness of my soul away.
Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh;
Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear.
To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh,
Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.
Hast Thou not bid me love Thee, God and King?
All, all Thine own, soul, heart and strength and mind.
I see Thy cross; there teach my heart to cling:
O let me seek Thee, and O let me find!
Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love,
One holy passion filling all my frame;
The kindling of the heaven descended Dove,
My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame
Words: George Croly, 1854.
John 4:21-25: Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain or in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
…I hope that you will enjoy a wonderful Sunday.
This is a new song for me and I love it! Thank you.
Beautiful words to this hymn.
Love the story of the woman at the well.
Ellen, this is one of my favorite hymns!! Beautiful tune, and the words are so moving. (I am not familiar with this second verse though.)
Cheryl, that verse is new to me, too.
Thanks great bloog
