Mid-December Hodgepodge

1. Are you more task oriented or people oriented? Elaborate.

I am Martha not Mary… I’d love to be Mary and if I work at it I can be more like Mary but I fall back to being Martha-ish..

Luke 10:38-42 (ESV)

38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

2. December 15 is National Wear Your Pearls Day…do you own/wear pearls? If you’re a man answering the question, does your sweetheart own or wear pearls? Everyone share a ‘pearl of wisdom’ with us here today.

P1050403I have some fake pearls that I sometimes wear but only wear them at events like weddings, etc. I do not vacuum with pearls on.

My pearl of wisdom is if you can’t afford pearls don’t buy them!

3. Speaking of pearls…oysters? Are you a fan or not a fan? If you answered yes, tell us your favorite way to eat oysters? If you said no, be honest-have you ever tried one or does just the idea of eating an oyster make you gag a little?

cdb89ba0-6ae6-4016-b989-d60ea7c63394_zpsakpjglptBefore 5 years ago I would gag if you talked about oysters. Now I can enjoy an oyster shooter with great spicy sauces. In the mosaic above my sisters and I are enjoying a weekend in Victoria, B.C. celebrating my 60th birthday in April of 2011. The top shot in the mosaic is an oyster shooter I ordered at the beginning of our meal.

4. Time Magazine has named President-elect Donald Trump Person of the Year. Let’s take presidents and presidential candidates out of the mix for a minute. If a political figure had not been chosen who would you name Man or Woman of the Year for 2016?

I’d nominate Cliff Barrows for man of the year. Cliff Barrows, music and program director for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, who once led congregational singing and Crusade choirs around the world with Billy Graham. Here’s a quote from him, “I’ve had no greater joy than encouraging people to sing,” said Mr. Barrows. “Every great moving of the Spirit of God has been accompanied by great singing. I believe it will always be so!”

Cliff Barrows, April 6, 1923 – November 15, 2016

5. The Pantone Color of the Year for 2017 has been announced, and it’s a vibrant green aptly named-greenery. Your thoughts? Is this a color currently in your home or wardrobe? Will you add something in this shade for the new year? Click here to see the color.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

While I was downtown yesterday at the Seattle Sounders Victory Parade Dear chose our mystery tree. When I came home we cut the strings and had the reveal. Another great stress free tree. It’s not perfect but it smells good. I hope to have it decorated by the weekend and I also hope to have our cards mailed by Friday, too. Our noses didn’t freeze off at the parade and rally. It was fun.

  1. Love your wall color and your decorating — are those Christmas napkins above the window, or something else? They are beautiful and the colors go so perfectly with the wall. Just noticed … your blog background is pretty much the same green as well!

    • mrstnh, yes those are napkins above the window. I love cloth napkins and have quite a stash so I change them out for different seasons…

  2. Hi dear Ellen! I love this post! I’m not a Martha. I admire Marthas very much, however.
I do have some real pearls that a friend gave me. She brought them from the Philippines.
I love green, too! Oh! When we were in Oregon our friends revealed that they are such TIMBERS fans and they were horrified when I hummed the Sounders song! Funny!

I love the looks of that tree! xoxo

  3. I’ve been offline most of the past month but am so glad to be back checking in on everyone. I own a pair of pearls earrings which my hubby bought for me in Hong Kong.
It will be fun for you to decorate that beautiful tree.

  4. Goodness! You are trendy and classic all in one. I never thought of your hall and kitchen being “Greenery, ” but you’ve proven it. All that and you like oysters, too. Yes, Cliff Barrows a good one! Did you know that the Billy Graham Assoc. was once named Graham and Barrows or something like that? He agreed with those who suggested it be made simpler.

  5. I like Cliff Barrows as Man of the Year too! Pearls, I have, but like you, I wear them for weddings and such occasions. Got mine for daughter’s wedding. Your Christmas tree is pretty just as it is! Good choice.

  6. I always learn interesting things about you. Beautiful header picture and Thanksgiving table. And National Pearl day ? I actually do own some pearls and missed the day of celebrating them. Oh well, next year. 🙂

    I enjoyed your December “hodgepodge”.

  7. A lifelong Marylander, I love most kinds of seafood. Except for oysters. But if you didn’t like them for 60 years and now you do, maybe there’s still hope.

I love your mystery tree and the concept behind it: no stress. I am sure that it smells wonderful! That’s the one thing that I miss about a real tree.

  8. That looks like a fabulous celebration meal, although, I would pass on the oyster. I love the color choice in your home, seems that you are a visionary in the design world. Break out those pearls and rock them on a daily basis, pearls go with everything, I even wear them with my jeans. Have a great week!
    Cheers!

  9. I would second your choice of Cliff Barrows for Man of the Year (2016)! He was an amazing man and used his gifts for the Lord he loved. 🙂
    Blessings,
    Aimee
