Oh, Come, Little Children
Oh, come, little children, oh, come, one and all,
To Bethlehem’s stable, in Bethlehem’s stall.
And see with rejoicing this glorious sight,
Our Father in heaven has sent us this night.
Oh, see in the manger, in hallowèd light
A star throws its beam on this holiest sight.
In clean swaddling clothes lies the heavenly Child,
More lovely than angels, this Baby so mild.
Oh, there lies the Christ Child, on hay and on straw;
The shepherds are kneeling before Him with awe.
And Mary and Joseph smile on Him with love,
While angels are singing sweet songs from above.
Words: Christoph von Schmid, 1794
I learned this song in Russian growing up and love to sing it today, too. The Russian words are different then the English translation but the ideas are the same.
This song reminds me of all the Christmas programs of my youth. Beautiful!
I learned this song in German as a child, as a gift for my grandfather. My sister and I sang it in his church on Christmas Eve one year.
Hey, it’s snowing again…I love snow and that’s why I have a flocked tree this year. It goes perfectly with your hymn. We used to always sing that song. How special to be reminded of any age old carol.
Ellen, I love this little Christmas song! I too learned this song in German as a child. The English translation you cite, is accurate from the German. I have a little German Children’s Songbook which I’ve inherited from my parents, and in it there are 4 more stanzas to the carol!
Marg N, 4 more stanzas! Wonderful!. I can sing this song in Russian in my sleep. I love it. Blessings…
I had never hear of this carol and enjoyed reading the words. I see that it’s Russian. How nice to get to enjoy it right now.
Ellen, I only learned of this song this year when Miss Baby learned playing it on her violin. We know the words to the first stanza, but not the rest. I am printing the words out for Miss Baby — she will have so much fun learning the words in the other stanzas. Thanks for sharing.
Ahhh … this brings back neat memories, Ellen! We used to sing this at the Russian church we attended when we lived in Argentina 🙂
Hugs, Nadine
