It’s time for ABC Wednesday and the letter D. Thank you Mrs. Nesbitt and the ABC crew for hosting this weekly meme.
D is for Doors!
‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.
Our tour guide in Oxford said that there are stories about this door being an inspiration to C.S. Lewis on the writing of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as he was housed behind this door from time to time.
and just to the right of this doorway was this…
…the lamp post that served as the model in the story.
Good story if it’s true and you can see the inspirations are there. The Chronicles of Narnia are a favorite of mine.
There is so much great history to hear about and see in Oxford. We are already talking about spending at least a couple days in this city the next time we visit Jolly Old England.

Now that is a wicked good looking door. I am a lover of Narnia and can so see this door. Excellent choice!
Doors are powerful imagery of transporting to or from somewhere.
I didn’t see that particular door or lamp post when I was there. I’ll have to have a word with Anne (j/k) who was my personal guide that day. Isn’t it a delightful city, though! Glad you’re enjoying it.

A beautiful door indeed – so cool to think it was what inspired C.S. Lewis!
The inspirations are definitely there! Even I have woven those images into dreams. Fun to think about!
whether the story is accurate or not, it makes a fun tale. I’ve learned to love Oxford through the BBC series “Inspector Lewis.”
Great series.
A good story there. 🙂
Happy ABCW!
I also love The Chronicles of Narnia ! Beautiful door!
Wil, ABCW Team.
I think I was supposed to read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when I was in school but I didn’t. Perhaps if I went to visit the door I would be inspired to complete the book 🙂
I love good solid doors, Oxford is a wonderful city, I’ve only been there once, certainly impressive too, My daughters loved the Tales from Narnia but it wasn’t on my school curriculum. I did enjoy watching it with them when they were little.

How interesting! I saw CS Lewis’s birthplace in Northern Ireland. He was also inspired by many places there!
Its certainly no ordinary door and how interesting to muse on where Lewis got some of his inspiration perhaps on a snowy day in Oxford.
Nice door…interesting story!
Those are interesting tidbits! It’s fun to imagine!
beautiful door.

I’m glad you had such a wonderful, enriching time there. You make me want a new front door =)
The door makes the house! Lovely wood. Maria’s Space
That door is beautiful. I hope it is true. That’s a charming notion.
Majestic door … to a fantacy
Beautiful carvings. Doors also reminds me of a really great musical group from my youth. “This is the End”
What a darling tale! Do hope it’s true, especially the lamp post 🙂
Handsome door and intriguing story♪
A couple of years ago when I just started painting again after a long absence, I did a series of small paintings of doors.
Love the theme of the doors
And loved the opening quotations, ” Behold I stand at the door and knock . . . . . . . ”
. . . and very interesting story about C S Lewis’s famous masterpiece . . .

Thank you for this post. And, yes, I can see how these items might have woven themselves into the Narnia series! I read them to my children, and I need to read them again. 🙂
Love this post. Enjoyed it all…
The door is part of Brasenose — which is my college, but not Lewis’… he was at Univ., and then taught at Magdalen. (In my time at Brasenose [B.N.C.], that part of College housed the Accounts department and Bursary, and the door wasn’t in use). The usual account of Lewis’ inspiration fro the lamppost cites his school experiences at Malvern.
Thank you, Peter, for this information! I appreciate your time in commenting and information.
