Oh the Hedgerows on the way to our first nights stop in England. If we weren’t anxious to arrive at our destination after being up for over 20 hours I would have yelled stop a few times to try to capture the narrow lanes lined in green.
We were so happy to finally turn the right corner and see our B & B in front of us.
The Malthouse B & B is located in the small village of Alton in the Staffordshire county of England.
We had rooms 8 & 9 in the Stables. Our room had the Hobbit window.
Josh and Laura experienced their first traditional fried English breakfast.
View of the village from the front door of the Malthouse.
For our dinner in Alton we chose The Bullshead Inn. It was a great improvement over the first pub meal we had.
Our hosts at The Malthouse were very helpful and gracious. We would recommend this as a fine spot to rest your heads as you investigate the area.
We are still in a rainy pattern here in the Northwest. How has October begun for you?

It’s so fun to see your vacation photos! Love the ‘hobbit windows’ and arched doorway. Our friends built a new house on the lake…with several ‘porthole windows’ and an arched front door.
Almost makes me wish to visit myself! : D Good thing that you are sharing the drive, the stops, the food so well. That breakfast looks very satisfying. Are those beans?
Yes, Vee, beans are usually included as part of the traditional English breakfast 🙂
Very helpful to have a great recommend for a UK trip! Beautiful place to visit and stay. Great memories with the family too!
This all looks so perfectly picturesque and exactly as I would imagine in books.
So picturesque, Ellen! I’m keeping all your recommendations in mind for when we go back over to the UK. We haven’t explored the countryside yet – only London. I’m looking forward to it someday soon, Lord willing.
Also catching up on all your posts – your mom’s funeral service was a beautiful celebration and testimony. What a lovely big family too – your pop has such a lot of love and support. xoxo
I’m enjoying your travel log/blog :). I am keenly interested in your travels in the UK – it’s on our “list” of places to travel to and I know you will be giving wonderful detailed reports. Trip Advisor look out!!! The stables and the hobbit window are just perfect!
Le sigh. I may have to stop looking at these photos because I am ready to book my flight to England! Love love love English country villages!
October at Willow’s House? Teaching. Quick trip to San Diego.
I can imagine how delighted you were to see that B&B. What lovely countryside. Loved your hobbit’s window….and the meals look vacation perfect.
The village view is so idyllic.
