Walking…

Above all, do not lose your desire to walk.  Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness.  I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it.  ~Soren Kierkegaard

Now shall I walk
or shall I ride?
“Ride,” Pleasure said:
“Walk,” Joy replied.
~W.H. Davies

An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.  ~Henry David Thoreau

I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain – and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light…. ~Robert Frost

Pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence. ~ Thoreau

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began,
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many path and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.
The Lord of the Rings
The Old Walking Song sung by Bilbo Baggins, Chapter ‘A Long-Expected Party’.

I’m hoping to inspire myself to walk more. These quotes are inspirational and make the case for walking quite strong. Maybe they can inspire you, too.

These photos are all paths we took while traveling to and staying at the Long Beach Peninsula. If you are looking for a spot to stay that affords many good walking paths in different settings this is a great destination. I would suggest buying a Discovery Pass before you travel here because some of the wildlife refuges and parking for the light houses require the pass. The pass is only $30-$35 and it’s good for a whole year for many state parks and refuge areas across the state.

  1. It would be easier to walk if I had pretty places like this to walk! Lovely pictures! I finally resorted to walking on a treadmill at the gym. It has been too hot to walk outside. So, I take my book and walk and read…it helps the time go faster…but it isn’t pretty! 🙂

  2. What an inspiration to begin walking…rain or shine. I love walking and feel useless if I have not walked or cycled almost every day. I think that’s the only time that God can get my attention because I enjoy the beauty around. Beautiful post.

  3. What a wonderful collection of walking quotations. I’ll be copying these out in my book. Walking is my preferred mode of exercise, and one that never fails to put me in a good mood. Lovely, lovely post. Thank you, Ellen.

  4. I’m wearing my walking clothes…and sitting at the computer! I have good intentions. Now if I could walk the paths of Long Beach this morning…I might be more inspired!

  5. Such wonderful photos of walking paths, and inspiring quotes to go along with them. Ellen! I take a 3 mile walk alomst every morning with friends in a local park’s walking path. Having someone along for the walk makes it fun and not feel like work. When I’m alone I put my IPod on and listen to favorite music.

The community I am moving to has 21 hiking trails and I am looking forward to exploring each one!

  6. I met a neighbor yesterday that has walked off ten pounds…Walking is the way to go for those of us that are not into gyms(me)…Enjoy where the paths take you..

  7. I’m thinking if I had all those beautiful places to walk it would be easier than my ugly, burnt to a crisp, 90% humid world. (c: I also think walking with someone would help me. I get bored alone. (c:

    • I hear ya Pam! As Willow said above…I miss my walking buddy. It’s definitely nicer to walk where God’s creation stares you in the face as opposed to having to look carefully to see it!

  8. Ellen, what a beautiful selection of paths and quotes. I love that first quote, which I had never read. I need to save it for my inspiration. Thank you for this inspiring post. laurie

  9. Your photos paired with those quotes are certainly inspirational! I have a yearning for such wonderful places to walk in the early morning, just looking at them! So much more refreshing and good for the soul than mall-walking, though it will do in a pinch, as it did today! 😉

  10. I love this post!!! The pictures pared with the great quotes are brilliant! I love the old walking song by Bilbo Baggins – Lord of the Rings is one of my very favourite books. I am inspired by willowknits idea of memorizing the song. Thanks for this – I think I’ll go for nice brisk walks these mornings to keep me energized for the next 10 days – eek.

  11. A beautiful post. The photos and your quotes have inspired me indeed. I want to go out and walk right now. But it’s dark already. Tomorrow is the first class in a 14-week Bird Watching Course I’m taking, so I’ll have some walking to do. Thanks for this wonderful post.

  12. Oh I want to walk on those ocean paths, through the dunes to the beach right now!!!! You’ve inspired me…I love Henry David Thoreau’s quote the best…I might just borrow that one as my inspiration for early morning walks!
