Today…from Rain to Glorious Clouds and Blue Sky!

Here’s how the morning began in Southern California on Friday…

Here’s how the day turned out! I drove to Oxnard to get gas at Costco and then stopped at a couple thrift stores. I know…shocking! Then I decided to follow the blue sky through downtown Oxnard to Hollywood Beach and the Harbor.

The Channel Islands were in view…

And the clouds were amazing…

Downtown Oxnard??? Who knew! I’m going back here soon to explore the historic section of this town and in the meantime find out why Oxnard was named Oxnard!

Tomorrow is a big day. We are picking up our son Josh at the airport in the morning then heading to the Tam O Shanter for lunch. After lunch we are going to a classic car show at Heritage Square in Los Angeles. But the real reason for the trip and the most exciting part of the day will be meeting up with lots of fans of the Seattle Sounders F.C. at the Home Depot Center in Carson where they will be playing Chivas. Nine family members will be together enjoying the game. On Sunday the family is meeting for lunch at my sister’s house before we take Josh back to the airport.

Have a nice evening and great Saturday!

UPDATE: Oxnard is named after the family that developed the first major industry here, a sugar beet factory in the 1890’s.Β  From time to time someone suggests changing Oxnard’s name to something else–Channel Islands to name one example.Β  So far, it’s still Oxnard!Β  (Although many folks do refer to the area or Oxnard adjacent to the harbor and beach as Channel Islands.) That’s why we say “Oxnard… more than just a pretty name.

Photobucket is holding all my photos that I stored on their site from 2007-2015 hostage replacing them with ugly grey and black boxes and asking for a large ransom to retrieve them. It is a slow process to go through all my posts deleting the ugly boxes.

  1. amazing is most definitely the word for those clouds! i’ve never seen anything quite like them…

and i got to the end of your post and thought to myself, “so *why* is oxnard named oxnard??” i appreciated your little postscript there, else i would have been compelled to google it myself or something;)

  2. Oxnard is where my MIL was living before we moved her to an assisted living here. I didn’t realize you were close to there!!

you and your “following the sky” trips….

gotta be careful with that…never know where that sky will lead you!

  3. What a coincidence, Ellen! I found myself photographing the sky throughout my drive yesterday, too. From fluffy clouds and blue skies in my town to overcasty and heavy clouds at work and back to blue skies again my brother’s neck o’ the woods. That’s Fullerton, foothill area, and then Sherman Oaks.

  4. those were all great pictures; thanks for telling us how Oxnard got its name. We are having another cool day here in the Temecula Valley with clouds/sun at times; nice break because I know when this weather pattern breaks the summer sun/heat will descend upon us

hope you have a fun time today!

    betty

  5. The story goes ( from an old tale) that wwhen the city had to report their name to the state that the phone reception was terrrible. One of the Oxnard brothers was in charge of reporting the information to the Capitka and out of frustration at the poor reception said “Hell just call it Oxnard!”. I suppose we should be gratefully Oxnard wasn’t called Hell πŸ™‚
I live in the histroci area downtown and invite you to our neighborhood… on The National Registry of historic neighborhoods. (Or close to that.
    Love your blog!

    • Thanks for the invite Ruth. I plan to come back and visit your neighborhood and to stroll around the historic downtown, too.

  6. Is that building one of the original Carnegie libraries?? I’ll have to find out- or wait until you find out and tell me πŸ™‚

We wore ourselves out at home unpackinb boxes and didn’t get to transport entry. We’ve promised ourselves a visit tomorrow! Who knows where and when we’ll end up.

  7. Hi Ellen B.,
It seems like forever since I’ve been to visit due to the crazy week I’ve had.
So you made it to the car show? I hope it was wonderful and that you all had a great time. I never did get around to posting my favorite house on the grounds or the darling white church. LIFE! So, my favorite house is the large white one as you enter the park. I don’t know if it was open while you where there, but I just love the interior with that huge sweeping staircase. Which was your favorite?
It’s 8:30 so I assume you’re at the game…I hope your team wins!!!!!

    xoxo Cori G.
