A New Blog Recommendation

Do you home-school or know anyone who does?

These are my 4 home-schooled nephews. My SIL Kelly and my brother Steve have home-schooled them from K to College. One of my nephews has graduated from Westmont College, one will be a Junior there this year, and one will be starting there in August. My youngest nephew is 16 now and still being home-schooled. These young men have gotten the best kind of education. They have learned to love learning. They have all represented the State of California at National History Day in D.C. several years in a row. Timothy and Levi have spent a summer or two in Africa serving at orphanages there. Levi leads college worship at Westmont. Caleb is serving at Forest Home Christian Camps this summer with young boys. All this to say that this family has done Homeschooling well and there is wisdom you can glean here.

Kelly’s new blog is called Substantive Education. Here’s how that is described.

“A Substantive Education provides more than a solid academic foundation. It is a life-long passion to know more of the world, it’s people, and it’s Creator. Substantive Education doesn’t just prepare one to make a living, but to live a full and significant life.”

Kelly is one great learner and teacher. She is also the Director of Grace Prep School which provides support services to other homeschoolers in her area. Besides all that she’s a Pastor’s wife. I rest my case…

You can get a lot of good tips for homeschooling or learning in general at this new blog. I highly recommend Substantive Education to you.

  1. I’ve seen home schooling done with excellence. I could have never done it. . .but I’ve admired the perseverence of those who have made their childrens education the top priority.

  2. Congratulations to those boys, ellen!

BTW, come to my blog you’ve won Third Prize in my “How Do You Tell the Good Guys from the Bad Guys?” contest. Congratulations! 🙂

  3. Can I post a link or quote your blog entry here? I have a blog called Christian Teacher Forum here on WordPress, which is basically for supporting Christian teachers, whether it be private, public or homeschooling. I’m sure that some of my blog readers would love to hear this success story and find another successful homeschooling mom! 🙂 Anna

Hi anna, Kelly is fine with you linking her or quoting her…

  4. I’m about to enter my last year of home teaching. Sam will be a senior. I’m going to subscribe; I think I’ll need some encouragement from someone who has ‘finished the race.’ I have such ambivalent feelings about the end of our homeschool journey–ready for it to be over and yet so sad to think it will really be over. . .

  5. I’m happy to share my link with any and all who want it. I’m somewhat new to this forum and am looking forward to meeting other homeschoolers outside of my little neck of the woods.

  6. okay the fountain below is beautiful!

and what handsome nephews you have! WTG for your brother and SIL to do that!

I’m still considering Homeschooling, but this year I decided the private Christian school.. If that doesn’t work well for us, than homeschooling it will be!

  7. Ellen, that is a beautiful tribute to Kelly and Hubby…..they are an amazing couple and have some awesome boys (young men)! A great picture of the “team” 🙂

  8. What handsome nephews you have, Ellen! You must be so very proud. And sounds like their parents deserve some kudos, too, for raising such fine sons!

    Have a great weekend!

  9. Welcome to Kjell Lee’s online sermon library!

The preaching of the Cross of the Lord Jesus Christ is the heart of the Gospel and it is my passion and priority. That message has always been the Power of God to save multitudes of men, women, and children all around the world.

  10. What a testimony of your nephews exhibit, and a testament to their parents.

I am sending the blog along to some friends that are homeschooling, and considering to home school. Thanks bunches!

    Blessings!

  11. Ah, the beauty of “Home Schooling” is that it can be very different for different families. Sometimes it is very much about the “schooling” (academics) and sometimes it is about the home.

These are very nice young men, clearly parents listened to God’s leading for their lives. The encouragement stories like these give to others who are to follow God’s leading in this direction is good.

The education of minds is perishing at the hands of modern academia and its drizzle down to the various forms of collective education be it public or private.

Hopefully those who feel the prompting of the Holy Spirit to forego collective education for an alternative that allows them to turn their child’s heart to the direction God would need them to go will not be discouraged and feel as if the only alternative to modern forms of education must have this outcome. Not all of God’s children are called to be doctors, lawyers and such, many more are called to be plain folk.

We whole heartily agree with the concept of life long learning. It happens in every place and in every way, very few occurances will be awarded a degree or applauded by the masses, but all of them, if directed by our Lord and Savior will enrich our lives beyond our wildest imaginations.

  12. The concept behind homeschooling has long interested me, though I was born and raised in a country that simply disdained homeschooling –often considered a compromise for troublesome or socially ill-equipped students who fail to function adequately in a conventional school setting. I can’t even begin to think how often I seriously considered –and even almost embarked on –homeschooling. As a mother of two young children, I cherish motherhood, and agree that parents are (should be) their children’s best educators. Despite this belief, I decided against homeschooling after all, and opted for a private education. As much as I cherish motherhood, I am striving to build my own identity outside the family sphere. Career pursuits remain vital part of my life. Each family must find or create its own path, I believe. Though (unfortunately) I don’t find myself capable of homeschooling, I continue to have deep admiration for parents who opt for it, knowing it takes a significant commitment. Enough said –congratulations for a job well-done.

  13. I’m just catching up on my blog reading after being out of town….

I’ve been homeschooling off and on (mostly on) for about 12 years now. I’m sure Kelly’s blog will be a real help to those just starting out as well as an encouragement to those who have been at it awhile. Thanks for sharing the link!
