Tuesday In Other Words ~

“Love is beautiful, but it is also terrible–terrible in its determination to allow nothing blemished or unworthy to remain in the beloved.”~ Hannah Hurnard ~

Here’s where I went with this quote.

God is love ~

I John 4: 7-10 ~ “Beloved, let us love one another for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

God disciplines those He loves ~

Hebrews 12: 5-14 ~ “And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.

It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had eartly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.”

Because God is Love in the purest form and His son resides in us we are disciplined so that we can reflect His image to the world and to glorify Him. God’s plan to save us because of His love for us involved the terrible pain of His son on the cross. When we receive this sacrifice for us we become children of God.  As children of God we need to accept the fact that we will suffer in order to be conformed to the image of God. His Firstborn suffered we will suffer, too.

  1. Great post Ellen!

I’m so blessed we have that perfect imagine to reflect God’s love for us to follow as we journey on.

I loved the way you shared what this passage meant to you!

    Blessings,

    Susan

  2. Bless Jesus! We were on the same track, almost identical. I wrote and posted mine in the midnight hour. I wasn’t even sure if it was as meaty as my other posts, but I see now that what God gives us for the moment we should never second-guess. Thanks for the confirmation that He is interested in our long-range good, which includes plenty of discipline!
