God Moves In Mysterious Ways ~ Hymn

God Moves in a Mysterious Way

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs
And works His sov’reign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;2
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flow’r.

Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan His work in vain;
God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.

Words: William Cowper, 1773.

  1. I just love to see a full rainbow. You captured it perfectly, Ellen. God does work in mysterious ways, and I have to confess that sometimes I don’t see the purpose for what He allowed in my life. Even when the storm has passed, I don’t have a clue why the storm came in the first place. Except for this: as the sun breaks through after the storm I find I am closer to Him than I was before the dark clouds rolled in. And so, I suppose THAT is the purpose. To give me a more vivid view of His faithfulness, His grace, and His mercy. Don’t know if this makes sense. I hope it does. Thank you for the rainbow and the hymn. Hugs.
