Down With Photobucket!

Photobucket is holding all my photos hostage from me that I added to their site from 2007 and beyond. When I got to 99% full of my free photo storage space they wanted me to pay for more space. I stopped adding photos to the site. I chose not to pay for more storage and now they have deleted all my photos from my blog posts. I am more than miffed because to free my photos from their grasp they want me to pay $$ a year.  What a bother. I worked all day on Friday trying to fix some of my many many posts. I’ve also had to restore many posts on the Mennonite Girls Can Cook. I’ve got miles to go before my posts are restored.

Addy is a bit concerned, too. I’m so glad that not one of Addy’s photos is stored at Photobucket!

  1. Oh no! I have lots of photos stored there, but I seldom load to my blog from there. All the grands’ baby photos for example. Yikes! Even my signature from each post is loaded from there. I’d be tempted to pay the $ just to get them off my case and then get the photos to a safe location for the future. All the best with that labor intensive chore.

  2. Oh no!!! I know the sickening feeling of having lost pictures and data – yikes. Hope you can get it all sorted out Ellen. I am using Picaso but am paying a monthly fee there – it’s not much. Now I would have second thoughts about cancelling that account too.

  3. Hello, I dropped a few of my photo galleries. The cost was getting to be a bit much. I am sorry they are lost for now. They offer to keep your photos on their free space and then they have nerve hold them hostage for a price. I am keeping my photos on an external hard drive for backup. Your Addy is so adorable, cute photo. Have a happy day and weekend.

  4. Oh dear. I just hate things like that. So beware of free on the internet. I guess that is just a way to get you on the site until you have to pay.

    • It’s definitely a snag in my blog. I’m going to have to go back to every post and delete their ugly black box on my posts and insert new photos.

  5. I’m so sorry to hear about this Ellen. I’m trying to be careful about using these services that appear to be ‘free’. I back up photos on an external hard drive. It’s upsetting when these services hold people to ransom to get back precious photos and I’m glad that your recent ones are not stored on Photobucket.

    • Thankfully I do still have my photos on cd’s and on memory cards but I’ll have to put them back on my computer to restore my posts. It’s a lot of work.

  6. Oh my goodness, Ellen. You have a zillion photos! “A lot of work” is a massive understatement… I used to use another photo repository that went out of business. They gave me a link to download all my photos, but that doesn’t solve the linked-to-blog problem.

If you have a yahoo account, their Flickr site offers a good amount of free storage. But as much as we all use photos and need a server for them, we may end up having to pay. I went “pro” with Flickr a bunch of years ago and have unlimited storage for $49 every 2 years.

  7. I feel your pain, Ellen, because it is happening to me, too…

I’m not sure I can ever fix all of them … at least I have the current ones replaced. I’m also thankful I’ve saved all pictures to my handy dandy portable hard drive …. this is my second one so far!

  8. i can definitely feel you. I just found out about this now. I have been using PB since 2004 and i have over 1,000 blog posts where all 8k+ pictures in my PB account are posted. All of them are nothing but a gray box now. im so heart broken i have been really loyal to them for the longest time. I dont mind the storage because I have them all in my hard drive, but i have 1k blogs how am i possible to re-edit all of them now.

    • I feel your pain for sure. It’s a blow to faithful bloggers who used their site. Thanks for letting me know I’m not alone…

  9. So frustrating! Now it makes me wonder what I’m missing from my posts. I don’t think I used photobucket too much but I can’t even remember what my password is anymore. 😦
