D is for Duomo!

It’s time for ABC Wednesday and our letter this week is D.

Thank you Denise, Roger, Leslie and the rest of the crew for keeping this meme going!

In March of 2013 I had the privilege to travel with my husband on his business trip to Milan, Italy.

The Duomo, Milan Cathedral, is the cathedral church of Milan, Italy. Dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente, it is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan, currently Cardinal Angelo Scola. The Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete.

This is one of the Duomo’s doors.

The Duomo is decorated with an amazing number of beautifully sculpted statues and spires. There are more statues on this building than any other in the world, 3159 in total. 2245 Of these are on the exterior together with 96 gargoyles and 135 spires.

I have extensive posts on the Duomo that you can find here (Duomo) here (Within the Duomo) and here (On Top of Old Duomo).

On Wednesday February 5th my daughter and I are going to brave the crowds and head to downtown Seattle to view the Super Bowl Parade. They are predicting quite the crowds to cheer on and congratulate the Seattle Seahawks in their first ever Super Bowl victory. The city of Seattle has been excited for 2 solid weeks and it will be a fun atmosphere to be a part of tomorrow. If I’m a little late getting around to your posts for the letter D you’ll know why…

  1. Beautiful angles. Amazing architecture.

Have fun tomorrow! Sounds very exciting.

(Thank you for the recommendation. The boys love the new app…free one, too.)

  2. I learned something .. for some reason I did not know (or it is one of the many things I have forgotten!) that Duomo is a ‘cathedral’ . I love the architecture of ages gone by — it always boggles my mind how they could build those beautifully detailed and awe inspiring buildings! Your photos are stunning.
You are VERY brave to join the ‘crowds’ tomorrow !! smile.. May you survive unscathed !

  3. The Italian Duomos are utterly fantastic. One that I particularly liked was in Orvieto – that was pretty special along with the one in Siracusa, Sicily. Haven’t seen the one in Milan but these are spectacular photos. One day…sigh

  4. What an amazing place! I know I’ll return to Rome and other parts of Italy some day– I threw a coin in Trevi Fountain. Thanks for whetting my appetite for travel.

  5. You are right : this is the best decorated church in the world. It must have been built by scuptors who really loved their work so much. Thanks for sharing your photos ! It is a great choice for D!

  6. Cathedrals are awesome photo ops aren’t they? The one in Milan is so awesome inside and outside too. Thanks for sharing that and bringing back memories to me.
And isn’t amazing to think that cathedrals often took a century to complete. Imagine serving on the building committee! And the budget/design team!

  7. Perfect D post, Ellen. I just read that there is going to be a documentary on the Duomo in Florence called Great Cathedral Mystery (or something like that). Looks really interesting – I am going to try to watch it.
