Before and After ~ Guest Room #2

This used to be our daughter Katie’s room before she got married and moved to North Carolina. We decided to re-decorate it making it into our second guest room. I’ve promised too show the process and results.

We started moving things around and moved some things out. We took our queen poster bed out of storage and bought new queen size mattresses to set it up. I had the quilt in the cupboard and since the colors of the walls in this room were blue and yellow we decided to decorate around the quilt. I bought a bed skirt, sheets, and quilted shams to complete the bed and moved the blue pillow from our other guest room. The white pillow shams were a steal at Goodwill in perfect shape for $1.99 each. The short bookcases went up into our master bedroom.

The bedside tables were part of the Queen Anne poster bed set that we purchased in the late 70’s. We moved the lamps from our master bedroom to this room. We washed the windows…oh so wonderful and crystal clear.

We brought in the two taller bookshelves that we moved from our condo in California. Next we started measuring and leveling for wall art. We switched this small desk with our larger home office work desk. We put this small desk in the other guest room which really opened up the space in there, too. We put the mirror in a horizontal position.

We aren’t interior decorators. Our decor has always worked around our comfort and re-purposing what we already have. Every now and again we buy something new that will work in with what we already have.

We moved more framed photos and art into the room from other rooms and storage.

We really are enjoying the new updated room and are looking forward to wedding company using the new space.

Katie arrives tonight for the 3 weeks we have till the wedding. We’ll be taking care of all the last minute details. I’m relaxing today because I know I’ll have very little time to sit around in the next 21 days.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend and that you have a good week ahead of you. I’m saving my President’s Day Post for after President Washington’s birthday because Katie, my friend Beth and I are going to High Tea at the George Washington Inn in Sequim to celebrate and I’ll be sharing photos from our time there later in the week.

I’m linking up with Mary at Little Red House for Mosaic Monday and I might link up with Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for Metamorphasis Monday.

  1. What a lovely makeover and guest room. The colors are beautiful and one that I would have chosen too. I have to ask, what did you do with all the beanie babies? I saw them all across the top shelf. Wonderful photo, have a great week!

    • Good eye Eileen. Katie sorted through them all. Kept a few, gave some away to little ones she knows. Several were sent to Africa for a project a church was doing.

  2. What a lovely transformation! I love a blue bedroom — so calming. I’m sure your guests will feel comfortable and welcome in such a beautiful space! xoxo

  3. It looks great, Ellen! Of course, I love the comforter because I have the same one in my guest room. Have a great week with your Katie home!

  4. Making do with things already in the house is my way of decorating, too. You’ve done a great job – your guests will be so comfortable there. And sparkling windows are just the best! Which reminds me that I should attend to mine…

  5. A lovely transformation. I’m sure that your darling daughter will agree. She may not want to go back home to North Carolina. North Carolina you say?

  6. A very pretty makeover – your guests will enjoy the calming colours and lovely art on the walls. You’ve done a great job making a long narrow room into an inviting spaceand I love that you used what you had on hand.

  7. Ellen, I liked seeing Katie’s girl at home room with all her stuffed animals up high, her lights and stuff. It reminded me of our girls rooms when they were still at home. I love the makeover room…it almost looks like one of our guest rooms. We have a similar bed….short posts….and blue and white….and like you we pulled from here and there and have a few hand me downs from our parents homes. Your guest room looks most inviting. 21 days…..say hi to Katie….have a great 3 weeks! I’m excited for you!

  8. I love how multifunctional you’ve made the room! It looks beautiful!

You must be so excited–only 3 weeks to go! I hope you all have a beautiful day! I can’t wait to see photos.

I finally found a MOB dress this weekend and I’m so relieved that task is over. I did not lose the weight I had hoped to, but I couldn’t delay getting the dress any longer. I was happy to find one I could try on that fit well and was a color I liked.

  9. what a cozy room you created. i had such a hard time converting my first daughters room when she moved out. it took me awhile before i could make changes. but when the second one left i couldn’t wait to redo the room.

  10. Ellen B, you took down the lovely picture of Johnny Depp playing the piano ‘-O. That’s one of my favorites and I’m particularly fond of that piano he’s playing. Oh well, your room looks perfectly cozy without it…heehee!
I remembered it was Katie and Andrew’s wedding week so wanted to pop in to wish them a happy wedding day and fun week ahead. You’re probably busy with last minute details.

Happy first day of Lent too!!!

    xoxo cori g.
